Laws of the Society
1. |
(a) | The object of the Society shall be to print, or reprint, for distribution among the members and for sale to the public, rare and valuable books, pamphlets and documents relating to the history of South Africa. |
(b) | ‘The Society shall be a body corporate capable of suing and being sued in its own name.’ |

2. | ‘The Council hereinafter provided for shall, at its first meeting after the election, determine the annual subscription for the following calendar year and such annual subscription shall be payable on the 1st January of each year.’ |
3. | Each member of the Society, having paid his subscription, shall be entitled to a copy of every work produced by the Society within the period subscribed for, and to vote at the General Meetings. |
4. | A General Meeting of the subscribers shall be held annually within the first four months of the year. |

(a) | The management of the affairs of the Society shall be vested in a Council consisting of nine members, viz. a Chairman, a Treasurer and six additional members, to be elected at such Annual General Meeting, and the Librarian of the South African Library as an ex officio member; provided that if the said Librarian shall be elected as Chairman or Treasurer, then seven additional members shall be elected instead of six thus ensuring that the Council should always consist of at least nine members. |
(b) | Every qualified subscriber shall be eligible for election as a member of the Council, provided:-
(i) | he has been duly nominated in writing by two other qualified subscribers (N.B. a qualified subscriber is a member who, at the date of the calling of the Annual General Meeting, is a life member, or who has paid his subscription either for the current or the previous year); and |
(ii) | his nomination has reached the office of the Secretary not later than 12 o'clock noon on the 21st day before the day of the Meeting. |
The Secretary shall immediately thereafter circulate all nominations to members |
(c) | Notice of such meeting shall be sent to members at least six weeks before the date of the meeting. |
(d) | The Council has the right to co-opt one extra member who is a qualified subscriber at any time. |

6. | The Secretary or Secretaries shall be appointed by the Council. |
7. | The Council shall meet when necessary for the dispatch of business, three forming a quorum, the Chairman having a casting vote. |
8. | Anyone preparing and editing works for the Society shall, if desired, receive gratis twenty-five copies of such works. |
