De tekst van deze brief bevindt zich op fol 24^r-25^r. De in het Frans geschreven brief is niet van L.'s hand, maar wel door hem ondertekend. Op het omslag heeft L. eigenhandig de volgende adressering geschreven: Illustrissimo Celeberrimo Doctissimo D^o Antonio Magliabechi. Florencen.

The text of this letter is to be found on fol. 24^r-25^r. The letter, written in French, was not written by L., but is was signed by him. On the envelope L. himself wrote the following address: Illustrissimo Celeberrimo Doctissimo D^o Antonio Magliabechi. Florencen.

Tresillustre et Tresdocte Seigneur

Jay receu la lettre doncq Vostre Illustre et Tresdocte Seigneur ma fait l'honneur d'escrire¹⁾, et me dire en mesme temps que j'obtiendray le pistol²⁾, laquelle on avoit dit que les depens montoit du grand present du livre³⁾ que Vostre Illustre Seigneur mavoit envoyez non meritee de moy: et peu de jours apres cela me mande le Seign^ra) johan Arnoldi⁴⁾ de Brusselle que le Seign^r Colombanus⁵⁾ luy avoit rendu son deboursement, et qui ne seroit pas juste de recevoir deux fois d'argent dune affaire, et que pour cela le pistol quil avoit receu de moy, il me renvoyra avec le basteau qui vient de brusselle tout droit a nostre ville, ou par poste, sur quoy ie luy repondit, qui me le renvoyera avec le basteau, et environ huict jours passe jay receu le pistol par le mesme bastelier, qui m avoit venir querir le pistol pour brussel. Et^b) c'est dont la cause que jay tarde jusqu'aujourdhuy de respondre sur vostre Tresillustre missive, craindre de troubler vostre Illustre personne par mes lettres dans ces continuelle soigneuses occupation.

2) Een pistolet was een Spaanse of Italiaanse gouden munt (escudo) ter waarde van een Franse kroon. Aan het eind van de zeventiende eeuw was een pistolet ongeveer 4,5 toenmalige guldens waard. In Brief 192 van 17 april 1698 schreef L. dat hij een pistolet voor het boek diende te betalen. Met pistol is hier wel de pistolet bedoeld en niet de pistool, die twee maal zoveel waard was.

Very Noble and Very Learned Sir,

I have received the letter which you, Very Noble and Learned Sir, have done me the honour to write¹⁾, informing me at the same time that I shall receive the pistole²⁾ which, as I was told, is the cost of the great present of the book³⁾ which you sent me beyond my deserts. And a few days later Mr. Johan Arnoldi⁴⁾ in Brussels informed me that Mr. Colombanus⁵⁾ has reimbursed him for his advance payment and that it would be wrong to receive money twice for one thing and that he will therefore return the pistole he had received from me by the boat which comes from Brussels direct to our town, or by post. I answered him that he should send it by boat, and about eight days ago I received the pistole through the same boatman who fetched the pistole from me to Brussels. And this then is the cause why I waited until today to answer your letter, from fear I might inconvenience you in your continual careful activities.

2) A pistolet was a Spanish or Italian gold coin (escudo) having the value of a French crown. At the end of the seventeenth century a pistolet had approximately the value of 4.5 then florins. In Letter 192 of 17 April 1698 L. wrote that he had to pay one pistolet for the book. By pistol here the pistolet will be meant, not the pistole, which had twice that value.

Il^a) me deplaist grandement que vostre Illustre personne a eu tant de peine pour me faire tirer le pistol, tant plus comme j'ay dit qu'un pistol ne vienne en aucune consideration, au reguard du grand present du livre, laquelle j'estime comme un bague et grand tresor.

Mais^a) cependant que⁶⁾ vostre Illustre et genereuse personne a voulut que jauray le present tout libre, ie vient a present m'acquiter de mon debvoir a vous remercier tres humblement, en souhaittant d'avoir occasion de rendre mes services.

Je^a) vous suis oblige pour la grande bonte que vostre Illustre personne a eu de m'envoyer la nouvelle d'italie⁷⁾, jay leu avec joye dans la vostre que Mons Cool⁸⁾ avec son Compagnon sont encorla, en sante et soigneuses estude.

I am greatly displeased that you have had so much trouble to let me have the pistole, the more so because I have said that a pistole is not to be compared at all with the great present of the book, which I value as a gem and a great treasure.

But since you, very noble and generous Sir, wished that I should receive the present quite free of charge, I am today acquitting myself of my duty to thank you very humbly, while expressing the wish that I shall be able to render you services.

I am obliged to you for the great kindness you had by sending me the news from Italy⁶⁾; I was pleased to read in your letter that Mr. Cool⁷⁾ and his Companion are still there, in good health and careful study.

I will conclude, thanking you once again, by saying that I am greatly displeased that the person who had received the book in order to hand it to me has caused you so much trouble and expense. I am ashamed when I think of that. I remain⁸⁾,
