Libelle
Wat een libelle hier in de woestijn deed, was hem een raadsel. Het was een waterschepsel, een trage, in taaislijm gehulde larve, die zich had ontpopt tot een elektrische naald van licht, gemaakt om over plassen en sloten te scheren en te dansen en zich zo te voeden met de insecten die van het oppervlak opstegen in donzige, mistige nevels. Maar daar was hij, zo rood als bloed, als bloed kan glanzen als metaal, en hij bleef voor zijn gezicht zweven alsof hij een boodschap wilde overbrengen. En wat zou die boodschap zijn? Ik ben de karmische gezant van de wereld der insecten, hier gekomen om u te verkondigen dat wij het goed maken. Hoera! Babhel-babbel-brabbel! Hij bleef er nog lang zitten, met gekruiste benen in een verzengende 48 graden, tot lang nadat het schepsel in schelle schichten weerkaatst licht was weggesuisd, en hij dacht beurtelings: Het werkt en Ik word gek.
En dit was pas de eerste dag.

Yurt
Hij verlangde ernaar, meer nog dan de blaasjes van zijn longen met lucht te vullen of het bloed door de kamers van zijn hart te pompen, zijn vrouw erover te vertellen, over dit wonder van een vuurlibelle in de woestijn. Maar dat kon hij natuurlijk niet, want deze retraite onder leiding van Geshe Stephen O'Dowd en Lama Katie Capolupo, draaide om stilte; stilte herboren, ononderbroken en totaal. Drie jaar, drie maanden en drie dagen, precies de periode die de Dalai Lama's zelve volbrachten in hun zoektocht naar verlichting. Hij had zich aangemeld, zijn rekening leeggehaald, zijn eerste vrouw een som geld betaald om te voorzien in haar onderhoud en alimentatie voor de tweeling, was drie weken geleden op een door een droge wind verschroeide middag getrouwd met zijn ware zielsverwant, en had de laatste hand gelegd aan zijn yurt. In de Arizona-woestijn. Tussen vijgcactussen en reuzencactussen en uitstekende rotsen die door de zon zo bleek waren uitgebeten dat ze de Boeddha zelf in verwarring hadden kunnen brengen. De

hitte was een aambeeld en hij was de witgloeiende staalpunt waarop de hamer sloeg.
Alhoewel hij licht in zijn hoofd was van de ochtend- en middaggroepsmeditaties en de hypnotiserende zuigkracht van de woestijnzon, duwde hij zichzelf omhoog en waggelde terug naar zijn yurt op benen die van was leken, zo weinig steun boden ze hem, terwijl het grote geschenk van de libelle in hem rondzong en er niet uit kon. Hij vond haar - Karuna, zijn vrouw, voorheen Sally Barlow Townes uit Chappaqua, New York - zittend in de lotuspositie, op de hennepmat net achter de deur. Ze was een slanke, bijna te magere vrouw van 29, met een duidelijk getekende kaak, een pruilmondje, en een kabel van gevlochten blond haar die het licht opzoog en vasthield. Ondanks de hitte droeg ze haar roze gebedssjaal over haar blauwe meditatierok van cashmère en zijde. Haar zweet leek wel body paint, iedere vierkante millimeter blootliggende huid glom ervan.
Aanvankelijk deed ze haar ogen niet open, zozeer was ze in haar innerlijke zelf verdiept dat ze niet leek te merken dat hij voor haar stond. Hij voelde een vluchtige steek van jaloezie om haar vermogen zo in zichzelf op te gaan, zo diep te reiken - en dat op de eerste dag, maar liefst - maar zette dat van zich af als zelfzuchtig en kwetsend, als slecht karma, als papa. Het mocht ze dan wel zijn voorgeschreven niet te spreken, bedacht hij zich, maar daar was iets op te vinden. Langzaam begon hij zijn ledematen te bewegen alsof hij op een onhoorbare melodie danste, toen knipte hij met zijn vingers, om de maat aan te geven, en eindelijk sloeg ze haar ogen op.

Kikkererwten
Over hun eerste avondmaal van de retraite, na de karige porties rijst en linzen die bij het gemeenschappelijk ochtend- en middagmaal waren verstrekt, was besloten op een moment dat ze zich nog hardop mochten uiten - dat wil zeggen, gisteren. Het zou bestaan uit tahin, citroensap en kikkererwten vermalen tot hummus, en basmatirijst en naan. Hij stond bij het fornuis en zag de kikkererwten kolken in een pan water op de gasbrander, die was aangesloten op de gastank die half was ingegraven in een kuil achter de yurt. Het moest een uur of zeven 's avonds zijn geweest - hij kon het niet met zekerheid zeggen omdat Geshe Stephen hen er allemaal toe had bewogen hun horloge af te doen en het ritueel te verbrijzelen tussen twee stenen. langzaam wat af en hij had het gevoel dat de temperatuur ergens tot laag in de 30 graden was gedaald, al hadden getallen hier geen enkele waarde en deed het er uiteindelijk niets toe of het verzengend heet was of ondraaglijk koud, wat 's winters het geval kon zijn, zo was hij gewaarschuwd. Wat er wel toe deed waren de kikkererwten, goudgeel in de pan. Wat er wel toe deed, was de libelle.
Hij had geprobeerd Karuna zo goed mogelijk duidelijk te maken wat hij had beleefd, waarbij hij terugviel op het uitbeelden van woorden, wat hem bepaald minder goed afging dan vroeger. Hij leidde haar naar de ingang van de yurt en wees naar de plek waar hij in de diffuse schaduw van een palo verde had gezeten, en vervolgens gebruikte hij de afstand tussen zijn wijsvinger en zijn duim om haar een idee te geven om wat voor schepsel het ging en hoe groot het ongeveer was, en hij verplaatste die ruimte met schokkerige gebaren om de bewegingen te imiteren, en tot slot gaf hij met een weids handgebaar het pad aan dat het had gevolgd. Ze keek hem wezenloos aan. Een libelle, een vuur-libelle. Twee woorden, gaf hij met zijn vingers aan en hij keek haar aan met een felle blik om het beeld van vuur op te roepen - hij spuugde vuur, of probeerde dat in ieder geval - waarna hij zijn blik verzachtte voor het insectendeel, en hij werd bij dit alles geholpen doordat er, bij het voorraam, een echt insect verscheen, een dikke bromvlieg die waarschijnlijk net was opgevlogen van een uitgedroogd karkas van een gesneuvelde pad of hagedis. Ze knipperde met haar ogen. Ze glimlachte. En ze had, zo te zien, geen flauw idee wat hij haar wilde duidelijk maken, al deed ze haar uiterste best zich te concentreren op de gelukzalige blik in zijn ogen.
En nu boog ze zich naar de oven, waar de platgeslagen deegballen al op brood begonnen te lijken, haar meditatierok aan de achterkant wat omhooggeschoven waardoor hij de vorm van haar enkels kon bewonderen, een vorm al even wonderschoon als die van de libelle - of nee, honderd keer mooier. Omdat haar enkels sierlijk overgingen in haar kuiten en haar kuiten in haar dijen en die weer... hij riep zichzelf tot de orde. Dit was niet de juiste aandacht en dit diende hij te onderdrukken. Geen aanrakingen, geen kussen en geen seks zo lang de retraite duurde, was de afspraak. En ineens zag hij die periode voor zich als een touw dat werd afgerold in een bodemloze put: drie jaar, drie maanden, drie dagen. Of, nee: twee. Eéntje zat er al op - nou ja, bijna. Een snelle berekening: nog 1.189 te gaan.

Hij wilde het handvat van de pan pakken, maar gebiologeerd als hij was door het gegoten goud van de kikkererwten had hij het handvat al beet voordat hij er erg in had hoe heet het was. En niet gewoon heet: nee, oververhit, gesmolten haast. Hij slaagde erin de pan weer op het vuur te zetten zonder hem om te gooien, maar door de harde klap van metaal tegen metaal schrok zijn vrouw, die grote ogen opzette en hem een vluchtige blik toewierp, en hoewel hij het wilde uitschreeuwen, wilde vloeken en krijsen en dansen om de pijn te kunnen verdragen, beet hij slechts op zijn vinger, bij de knokkel, en liet de tranen over zijn beide neusvleugels lopen.

Tarantula
De eerste nacht diende zich aan als een verblindende sterrenstolp. De temperatuur daalde tot bijna draaglijk, niet dat het ertoe deed, en hij staarde zo lang naar de concentrische ringen van het kegelvormige dak van de yurt, dat ze begonnen te vervagen. Verveelde hij zich? Nee, helemaal niet. Hij had de wereldse ruis niet nodig, de mobieltjes en de TVs en de laptops en de rest, vergankelijke dingen, afleidingen, vleselijke zaken - hij had behoefte aan innerlijke focus, sereniteit, het pad van Bodhisattva. En dat volgde hij, met twee voeten stevig op de grond, terwijl hij zijn ogen neersloeg om de bewegingen in zich op te nemen van Karuna die zich klaarmaakte om naar bed te gaan. Ze was de vleesgeworden genade, gleed uit haar kleren alsof ze opdook uit een koele, heldere bergbeek, naakt voor zijn ogen, terwijl ze zich vooroverboog naar het stijve katoenen nachthemd dat onder haar kussen lag opgevouwen, op de opgehoogde houten pallet naast de zijne. Hij bestudeerde de spanning van de spieren in haar billen, het dal daartussen, de manier waarop haar borsten vrij zweefden terwijl ze naar het bed boog, en het was zo goed, zo puur en volmaakt dat hij wilde zingen - of chanten. In zijn hoofd chantte hij, Om mani padme hum.
Plotseling deinsde ze terug van het bed alsof het vlam had gevat, het nachthemd tegen haar borst geklemd met - nu was het haar beurt - haar vuist in haar mond om te voorkomen dat ze zou schreeuwen. Hij sprong op en zag de tarantula, een wonder van de schepping, even verbluffend van voorkomen als de libelle, zij het minder onverwacht, want dit was zijn habitat, zijn thuis in de wereld der verschijnselen. Zo groot als een uitgespreide hand, pauzeerde hij kort op het kussen, alsof hij zich wilde koesteren in zijn glorie, en toen liep hij, op die onaangedane stelten van

poten die eruit zagen als wandelende vingers, langzaam de lemen muur af. Karuna draaide zich naar hem toe, met van angst gebroken ogen. Ze mimede Sla 'm dood en onwillekeurig bewonderde hij haar in haar opperste nood want er was geen spraak, niet de geringste klank, alleen de vertrokken lippen en de grimas van het woordeloze werkwoord.
Hij schudde nee. Ze wist net zo goed als hij dat de hele schepping heilig was en dat het nemen van een leven de allerergste papa bracht.
Ze vloog naar het druiprek waar de afgewassen en opgedroogde pan op zijn kop lag, die ze pakte en hem in de hand drukte, gebarend dat hij het beest moest vangen en de nacht in moest brengen. Ver weg. Liefst over de eerste bergrichel heen.
En dus bewoog hij de pan naar de muur maar de tarantula, met zijn vele ogen en zijn levensdrift, voorzag het en stoof weg over het lemen oppervlak alsof hij werd gedragen door een stormwind om tot slot te verdwijnen in de mysterieuze donkerte onder het bed van zijn vrouw.

Geshe
Vroeg in de ochtend, naar zijn idee zo rond half vier, vier uur, begon de eerste meditatiesessie van de dag. Niet dat hij überhaupt veel had geslapen, aangezien Karuna er met gebaren en een schaamteloos lichamelijke handeling - ze kneep in zijn bovenarm met twee vingers die al even scherp leken afgesteld als de tasters van de eerste de beste tarantula - op had aangedrongen om van bed te ruilen, in ieder geval voor die nacht. Hij vond het geen punt. Hem waren alle schepselen even lief, al had hij zich wel, terwijl hij daar in het donker lag te luisteren naar de afwisselend hoge en lage tonen van het zachte gesnurk van zijn bruid, onwillekeurig afgevraagd wat precies de boodschap was geweest van de tarantula. (Ik ben de karmische gezant van de wereld der spinachtigen, gekomen om te verkondigen dat wij het goed maken, en daarom wilde ik je vrouw bijten. Hoera! Babbel-babbel-brabbel!)
Geshe Stephen, die hen beiden had gewekt door met zijn knokkels op de deur te kloppen, een geluid dat als een geweerschot door de yurt weergalmde, was een lange, enigszins gebogen man met een grote neus, waterige, blauwe ogen en uitzonderlijk grote neusgaten waarin steevast twee druppels vocht parelden. Hij was 62 en had de graad van Geshe - grofweg het equivalent van doctor in de godgeleerdheid - weten te bereiken door een levenslange studie en een onwankelbare toewijding aan het Edele Achtvoudige Pad van Gautama Boeddha. had twee keer eerder verlichting gezocht in een stilteregime en hij was even sereen en onontvankelijk voor aardse beslommeringen als een briesje dat door de hoogste takken van de hoogste boom op de hoogste berg strijkt. Voorafgaand aan de retraite, toen de dertien aspiranten hun onderkomen bouwden en woorden hun ruilmiddel waren geweest, was hij met ontelbare parabelen gekomen, waarvan het verhaal van de kluizenaar en de monnik het meest tot de verbeelding had gesproken - in ieder geval van deze ene aspirant.
Ze waren samengekomen in de lemen tempel en zaten in een volmaakte kring op de grond. Hun gewaden plooiden zich om hen heen als rimpelingen in het water. De muren van de ronde ruimte baadden in zonlicht. ‘Ten tijde van de Boeddha was er eens een monnik die zijn hele leven had gewijd aan het mediteren op een enkele mantra,’ psalmodieerde de Geshe, waarbij zijn wonderbaarlijk lange en beweeglijke bovenlip op en neer ging en zijn stem zo naar binnen was gekeerd dat het haast een zucht leek. ‘Tijdens zijn reizen hoorde hij over een oude heilige, een kluizenaar, die op een eiland in een immens meer woonde. Hij vroeg een jollenman hem naar het eiland te roeien zodat hij met de kluizenaar van gedachten zou kunnen wisselen, al wist hij diep van binnen dat hij een niveau had bereikt waarop niemand hem nog iets kon leren, zo volkomen was hij opgegaan in zijn mantra en de miljoenmiljoenen herhalingen. Toen hij de kluizenaar ontmoette kwam hij tot de verbijsterende ontdekking dat deze man zich aan precies dezelfde mantra had gewijd, gedurende een overeenkomstig aantal jaren, maar toen de kluizenaar de mantra hardop chantte begreep de monnik meteen dat de kluizenaar het bij het verkeerde eind had en dat al zijn toewijding voor niets was geweest - hij sprak de klinkers verkeerd uit. Als gebaar van medeleven, van karuna’ - en hier zweeg de Geshe even om de kring rond te kijken, waarna zijn blik bleef rusten op Karuna, met haar glanzende vlecht en haar beeldschone blote voeten - ‘corrigeerde hij heel vriendelijk de uitspraak van de kluizenaar. Daarna chantten ze nog een poosje samen, totdat de monnik weer vertrok. Hij was halverwege het meer toen de jollenman beide roeispanen liet vallen en met een schichtige blik achterom keek, want daar stond de kluizenaar, die zei: “Neem me niet kwalijk, maar zou u zo vriendelijk willen zijn de mantra nog een keer voor me te herhalen, zodat ik zeker weet dat ik het goed
heb?” Hoe was de kluizenaar daar gekomen? Hij was komen lopen. Over het water.’ Weer die stilte, weer de blik van de Geshe die

de kring rondging en dit keer niet op Karuna bleef rusten, maar op hem. ‘Zeg jij het maar, Ashoka:Welke klank heeft de waarheid?’

Ashoka
Zijn naam, zijn eerdere naam, de naam op zijn geboorteakte en op zijn door de staat New York afgegeven rijbewijs, luidde Jeremy Clutter. Hij was 43 jaar oud, had een bachelor in de kunsten (hij was pottenbakker geweest) en een master in oriëntalistiek, een huis in Yorktown dat nu van zijn eerste vrouw Margery was, en een met de middelbare leeftijd opgekomen buikje waarvan hij zich maar al te bewust was - of was geweest. Hij had Sally leren kennen tijdens een intensieve boeddhismeweek in Stone Mountain, in Georgia, en zij had hem erop gewezen dat de Boeddha zelf blijmoedig zijn buikje had gedragen, waarbij ze hem met een vrijpostig gebaar daar had aangeraakt. In zijn eerdere leven had hij een aardig inkomen verdiend met het internetbedrijfje dat hij had opgezet, dedraaischijf.com, dat niet alleen de crash van 2001 had overleefd, maar daarna alleen nog maar beter was gaan draaien. Geld had zijn yurt gebouwd. Geld had Margery afgekocht. Geld gaf de gratie van de Geshe glans. En de Geshe had hem zijn ware naam gegeven, Ashoka, wat letterlijk vertaald uit het Sanskriet ‘Zonder Droefenis’ betekende.

IJzerhout
De meditatiesessie van de tweede ochtend werd, net als alle volgende, buiten gehouden op een lichte verhoging van bijeengewaaid zand omgeven door cactussen en kale struiken. Er zat een kou in de lucht die niet bij het jaargetijde paste; behalve voor verlichtingzoekers, ze negeerden het. In gedachten chantte hij zijn mantra totdat die klonk als een klok, en hij nam zich voor morgen een jas mee te nemen. Geshe Stephen liet hen doorgaan totdat de zon over de bergen kwam aansuizen als een speer van vuur, toen stond hij op en gebaarde dat ze konden gaan. De Geshe boog, op zijn sacrale, lange-neusmanier, nam Ashoka zachtjes bij de arm en hield hem zo bij zich tot de anderen weg waren. Met een resolute wijsvinger, de vinger van overtuiging, wees de Geshe naar een vale heuvel van aarde en steen in de nabije verte, boog toen als een pantomimespeler naar de grond en deed of hij iets oppakte. Ashoka had geen flauw benul wat de man duidelijk probeerde te maken. Geshe Stephen herhaalde de vertoning, nu met iets

meer kracht en iets minder van dat sacrale. Maar nog steeds begreep hij het niet. Moest hij, bij wijze van oefening, als les, de berg tussen zijn twee gespreide armen de maat nemen om deze als het ware tot zijn essentie terug te brengen? Tot aarde, dus?
Uiteindelijk haalde de Geshe geïrriteerd een schrijfblokje en een potlood uit zijn zak en krabbelde zijn verlossende boodschap: Ga naar de berg en sprokkel ijzerhout voor de wintervuren in de tempel. Meld je daarna - ‘melden’ was het werkwoord dat hij gebruikte - in de tempelkeuken om aardappels en daikon te schillen voor de gemeenschappelijke stoofpot.

Vliegenpapier
De dagen kleefden aan hem als vliegenpapier. Er was niet meer dan het moment. Hij was in zichzelf gekeerd geraakt. Toch, heel langzaam, gaven de dagen mee, lieten los en flapperden in de wind die over de woestijn joeg met het tumult van afgevallen stekels en zaadbollen. De nachten kwamen vroeger, de ochtenden later. Op een ochtend duwde de Geshe, na de groepsmeditatie, een briefje in zijn hand. Het briefje vroeg hem - of nee, droeg hem op - om de waterwagen tegemoet te gaan die iedere twee maanden over de roerloze vlakte vanuit Indio Muerto kwam, het meest nabije stadje, zo'n 55 kilometer verderop.
De tankauto die misleidend bosgroen was gespoten, verscheen als een bewegend stipje in de verte en nam haperend de geulen en kuilen van wat ooit en dan nog maar bij tijden een onverharde weg was geweest. Hij zat er met gekruiste benen op de onvruchtbare aarde naar te kijken, uren- of zelfs dagenlang leek het wel, ieder besef van tijd en de vluchtige jachtigheid der dingen was hem nu vreemd. Er zou een moment komen dat de tankauto voor hem stond, dat wist hij, en dus draaide hij aan zijn gebedsmolen en chantte inwendig tot de vrachtwagen er inderdaad was, pal voor hem het uitzicht versperrend alsof hij net aan de aarde was ontsproten.
Hij zag dat de uitdrukkingsloze oude man die vroeger altijd kwam was vervangen door een nieuwe chauffeur, een magere apenkop van een jongen van een jaar of 19, 20 met getatoeëerde armen en een pet achterstevoren op zijn hoofd, en dat de jongen zijn dito getatoeëerde en bepette vriendinnetje had meegenomen op de eenzame rit door de woestenij. Geen probleem. Ashoka misgunde het hem niet. Integendeel, terwijl hij toekeek hoe ze uit de cabine van de vrachtwagen klommen, moest hij onwillekeurig denken aan de tijd dat hij en

Margery door het hele land hadden gereden in een auto zonder radio en dat Margery later zei dat hij tijdens de reis geen moment stil was geweest maar had gezongen en gelachen en het ene verhaal na het andere had opgedist want voor hem draaide conversatie, althans toentertijd, niet om waarheid of zelfs maar om communicatie - maar diende het, eenvoudig en direct, tot vermaak.
‘Dus, eh,’ zei de jongen, wat hem uit zijn mijmering deed opschrikken - of nee, het bracht hem totaal uit zijn evenwicht, de impact van die twee hardop uitgesproken lettergrepen die echoden als donderslagen - ‘waar had je het willen hebben?’
Hij drukte zijn handen tegen zijn oren. Zijn gezicht werd rood. Op dat moment, terwijl hij opstond, ving hij een flits op van zichzelf in het grote glanzende vlak van de zijspiegel van de tankauto en het was alsof hij in zijn maag werd gestompt. Wat hij daar gereflecteerd zag leek precies op een van de prestas, de rusteloze geesten die gedoemd waren te versmachten en sterven omdat ze aan eerdere levens hingen; zijn haar was wit als de dood en stak naar alle windrichtingen, zijn ledematen waren stakerig, en zijn gezicht was zo verbrand als een hotdog die te lang op de gril had gelegen.
‘Hoo,’ zei het joch, terwijl het meisje met een van angst en afgrijzen vertrokken gezicht bescherming zocht onder zijn arm, ‘alles goed hier?’
Wat kon hij zeggen? Waar moest hij beginnen?
Hij maakte een gebaar om de vraag af te wimpelen. En een ter geruststelling. En toen draaide hij zich zo langzaam om alsof hij een boom was die naar het licht toe groeide, hij tilde een hand op en wees, beverig, naar de watertank, die zwevend op houten steunbalken rustte achter de twee witgekalkte yurts die respectievelijk onderdak boden aan Geshe en Lama en die als een paar ijscohoorntjes uit de levenloos geschroeide aarde oprezen.

Signaalhoorn
Iedereen in de groep, zij alle dertien plus Geshe Stephen en Lama Katie en hun directe buren, voorheen Forest en Fawn Greenstreet (nu respectievelijk Dairo en Bodhi), had een signaalhoorn. Voor noodgevallen. In het geval van een ongeluk, ziekte of brand, konden de signaalhoorns worden gebruikt om hulp in te roepen. Hij zat elke dag lange tijd peinzend voor het exemplaar dat Karuna en hem was verstrekt, al kon hij niet goed zeggen waarom. Misschien omdat het een

schakel was met de wereld waarvan hij afstand had genomen, een uitweg. Of omdat het ding een mooie vorm had. Of omdat er in de yurt geen enkel ander voorwerp was met kleur, echte kleur.
Karuna zat bij de snijplank en sneed komkommer in blokjes. Ze was afgevallen. Maar ze was gespierd en tanig en mooi, al deed dat er niet toe, en hij genoot van de aanblik die ze bood, haar ellebogen die snel heen en weer gingen onder haar gewaad dat openviel en de roze lange onderbroek eronder toonde. Buiten was het donker. In de houtkachel brandde een vuurtje. Karuna's ellebogen gingen heen en weer. Even daarvoor had ze geprobeerd hem iets te vertellen over haar dag, over wat ze had meegemaakt tijdens haar wandeling in de woestijn, maar hij had er maar weinig van kunnen begrijpen, hoewel hij niet aan haar kon tippen waar het op uitbeelden aankwam. Iets met een helling en een bepaald moment en iets wat ze daar had gezien, sporen, meende hij, en een weggegooide waterfles. Hij had glimlachend geknikt, alsof hij het begreep, omdat hij genoot van haar fonkelende ogen, die heen en weer schoten en weer tot rust kwamen, genoot van haar getuite lippen en de schim van haar borsten die werden ondersteund en op hun plaats gehouden door het thermische weefsel dat haar omsloot als een tweede huid.
Deze gedachten waren ongezond, dat wist hij. Pe-pe-peh
Het was een probleem, en het werd met de dag een groter probleem. Karuna waste haar gezicht boven een pan water die hij voor haar op de houtkachel had opgewarmd, haar uit de strakke vlecht bevrijdde haar bewoog alsof het een eigen leven leidde; hij had haar loom staan bekijken en dacht ondertussen terug aan hun eerste nacht samen, waarop ze tot hun geluk hadden ontdekt - karma, het was puur karma - dat ze vlak bij elkaar woonden, op nog geen half uur rijden door de dichtbeboste heuvels van Westchester County. Dat was in Georgia geweest, op de laatste avond van de intensieve week, waarop ze bij biertjes draalden en gegevens uitwisselden, en door dat toeval was Karuna zo verbluft geweest dat ze de tafel had verlaten voor een traag golvende dans, waarna ze zijn hand had gepakt en hem naar haar kamer had geleid.

De boodschap van de slang - dat wist hij al voordat Dairo en Bodhi, met Geshe Stephen en de anderen in hun kielzog, uit de duisternis tevoorschijn schoten met gezichten als fladderende witte vleermuizen - was dit: Ik ben de karmische gezant van de wereld der reptielen en wij maken het niet goed. Alles is leeg en er is geen einde aan de pijn. Hoera! Babbel-babbel-brabbel!

Zonder droefenis
Een kluwen van handen bewoog als gedachten, jongleerde met onuitgesproken zinsneden en tastte de randen van de paniek af. Iedereen gebaarde door elkaar, de yurt slonk om hen heen, de slang verdween, het vuur in de kachel doofde. Karuna's ogen knipperden niet langer. Ze leek in een diepe trance, zo diep als een ziel maar kon gaan, gefocust op de steeds hogere welvingen van het dak en het ronde gat dat uitzicht bood op de nacht en de sterren en het doodse zwarte gelaat van het universum daarboven.
Zijn handen trilden toen hij het potlood pakte en een briefje krabbelde voor Geshe Stephen, die over het bed gebogen stond, ogenschijnlijk vertwijfeld. Er moet een dokter komen.
De Geshe haalde zijn schouders op. Er was geen dokter. Er was geen telefoon. De dichtstbijzijnde plaats was Indio Muerto. Dat wisten ze allemaal - ze hadden het allemaal geweten toen ze tekenden, en de gevolgen ervan boorden zich nu als splinters in hun bewustzijn.
En de auto dan?
Weer een schouderophalen. De enige auto van de gemeenschap was de hoekige witte Prius van Geshe Stephen, die onder een op maat gemaakte doek achter zijn yurt stond, zodat de vormen niemand in verleiding zouden brengen van het pad af te dwalen ten koste van de dingen die gedaan moesten worden. De wielen stonden op blokken en tijdens een ceremonie op de eerste dag had de Geshe als symbolisch gebaar de benzinetank leeg laten lopen en de verdeelkap weggehaald, waarbij de verzamelde aspiranten verrukt hadden toegekeken.
Ze moet naar het ziekenhuis! schreeuwde hij in boze blokletters over het papier.
De Geshe knikte. Hij was het met hem eens. Hij liet zijn schouders

zakken, toverde een strak glimlachje tevoorschijn dat bij beide mondhoeken uitmondde in een grimas. Maar hoe? zei zijn blik.
In de stilte die zwaar was van het geschuifel van voeten, zowel met als zonder slippers, het zachte sissen van het fornuis en het subauditieve kabaal van neuronen die vuurden in hersenen die niet langer in contact stonden met een ziel, niet langer sereen en meditatief waren, neuronen die van het pad waren gedrukt en uit alle macht probeerden de weg terug te vinden, klonk ineens een lage, doordringende, reutelende kreet van de gestalte op het bed, van Karuna. Ze draaiden zich als één man naar haar toe. Haar gezicht was vertrokken. Haar been was opgezet tot twee keer de oorspronkelijke dikte. De huid om de wond was zwart. Later, toen ze allemaal, één voor één, machteloos waren weggelopen, stookte hij het vuur op en zat naast haar terwijl haar adem vertraagde en versnelde en zich tot slot voor het laatst in haar keel liet vangen. Het kon een uur of minuten hebben geduurd, hij wist het niet. In zijn hoofd had zich een nieuwe mantra gevormd, een jingle van een TV-reclame uit de tijd dat hij nog een kind was geweest, een jongen van honkbalweides en asfalt basketbalveldjes met verbogen en verroeste baskets en het intense onwerkelijke groen van een New Yorkse zomer, groen in zoveel tinten en zo alomtegenwoordig dat het een belofte van nieuw leven leek. In de woestijn liep hij zonder doel of bestemming. Hij had een mantra nodig maar hij had er geen. Even schoot hij door zijn hoofd, de mantra die de Geshe hem had gegeven, maar hij kon hem niet vasthouden nu zijn hoofd was leeggevaagd. De zon was het oog van God, alert en indringend. Na een poosje leken zijn voeten hem in de steek te laten en zonk hij neer in de beschutting van een grillig gevormde rots.
Het waren stemmen waar hij wakker van werd, menselijke stemmen, die hardop spraken. Hij knipperde zijn ogen open en keek in drie angstige gezichten, man, vrouw en kind, elk met een brede strohoed die als een aureool hun schedel omkranste. Ze stonden tegen hem te praten in een taal die hij niet begreep. ‘¿Necesita usted socorro?’ zeiden ze. ‘¿Tiene agua?’. Toen knielde één van hen, de vrouw, bij hem neer en zette een jerrycan met water aan zijn lippen en hij dronk, maar mondjesmaat, en alleen omdat hij wist dat ze pas weg zouden gaan, pas zouden ophouden met práten, als hij wat dronk. Hij had geen water nodig. Hij was het water ontstegen, bevond zich op een totaal ander pad. Hij stelde hen gerust met gebaren, bedankte hen, zegende hen, en toen waren ze weg.
De zon vervolgde zijn baan zodat de uitstekende rots zijn schaduw verloor. Zijn ogen sloten zich maar de oogleden brandden totdat hij ze weer opendeed, en toen hij ze opende was daar de libelle. Hij bestudeerde hem lange tijd, het subtiele samenspel van de vleugels, de ragfijne kalligrafie van zijn poten en de perfect aansluitende geledingen van de romp. En wat was zijn boodschap? Er was geen boodschap, zag hij nu in. Slechts een schicht van licht, die een moment - alleen dit moment - boven de woestijnvlakte zweefde.
