‘Le style c'est l'homme’.
The shortest way to the distinguishing excellence of any writer is through his hostile critics; for it is always the quality they most diligently attack. - That precious offending quality is generally the most significant of all qualities, style. Most significant, because if we seek out the reason of a style, we are at once in the heart of the writer's mystery, at once face to face with his peculiar artistic message. As all style is organic, we have but to track the springs of that organism to come upon the urgent impulse to expression, the quality of which marks a writer's individuality.
