I. Het boek RichterenGa naar voetnoot1In 1961 werd door prof. dr. M.A. Beek, oudtestamenticus aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, onder de naam Societas Hebraica Amstelodamensis (SHA) een vertaalgroep in het leven geroepen die zich in hoge mate geïnspireerd voelde door het monumentale werk dat Martin Buber in samenwerking met Franz Rosenzweig tot stand had gebracht: Die SchriftGa naar voetnoot2. In deze vertaling volgt Buber de Hebreeuwse tekst op de voet en probeert hij de eigen zeggingskracht, dus ook de eigen-aardigheid van de He- | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

breeuwse taal met zijn veelheid aan stilistische middelen, in zijn Duitse weergave te laten voortleven. Vaak genoeg komt het dan voor dat hij - juist terwille van de speciale zeggingskracht van het Hebreeuws - woorden moet creëren die volgens de officiële Duitse lexica helemaal niet bestaan! We spreken in dit verband van een idiolecte vertaling (afgeleid van het Grieks: idios = eigen, legein = lezen): het eigene van de grondtekst wil men zoveel mogelijk ook in de ontvangende taal behouden. Vertalers die vanuit een dergelijk beginsel aan het werk slaan, achten het bijvoorbeeld tot hun plicht om hetzelfde Hebreeuwse woord ook steeds met hetzelfde Nederlandse begrip weer te geven, om aldus (meer) aandacht te krijgen voor de ‘resonantie van de woorden’. Met twee korte voorbeelden wil ik dat verduidelijken; ik ontleen ze aan het boekje dat als een soort commentaar geschreven is bij de bovengenoemde idiolecte vertaling van RichterenGa naar voetnoot3. Men vindt er niet alleen een exegese van de betreffende verhalen (K. Deurloo, A. van Daalen), maar ook een historisch overzicht (L. Smelik)Ga naar voetnoot4, geografische notities en overzichtskaarten (H. Blok) alsmede een verantwoording van de idiolecte vertaalwijze (F. Hoogewoud). Een heel belangrijk woord (‘Leitwort’) in het boek Richteren is het Hebreeuwse verbum jasja'. Het is - zo luidt het standpunt van de Amsterdamse groep - dus de plicht van de vertaler(s) om overal waar dit werkwoord voorkomt het steeds met bevrijden weer te gevenGa naar voetnoot5. Men spreekt dan wel van: concordant vertalenGa naar voetnoot6. Een tweede voorbeeld is ontleend aan Richteren 19, waar het werkwoord lan het motief is dat heel het hoofdstuk structuur geeft: overnachten. Terwijl de Statenvertaling (1637) en het Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap (NBG, 1951) consequent ‘overnachten’ weergeven, treft men bijvoorbeeld in de Willibrordvertaling (1975) naast ‘overnachten’ ook formuleringen aan als ‘langer blijven’ en ‘voor de nacht’. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Het zal de lezer niet verwonderen dat men, stoelend op deze principiële uitgangspunten, herhaaldelijk een vertaling in het Nederlands gepresenteerd krijgt die nogal weerbarstig is en bij vlagen zelfs vreemd aandoet. Zo is het in onze taal bijvoorbeeld zeer ongebruikelijk om een zin te openen met: ‘Niet...’. Maar omdat iets dergelijks in het Hebreeuws vrij gewoon is, wordt in Richt. 1:27 een tamelijk ‘onnederlandse’ constructie in het leven geroepen: ‘Niet onterfde Manasse:...’. Zo creëert men eigenlijk bewust een sterk archaïsche stijl. Ik zou dat willen illustreren aan Richt. 8:18. In de Willibrordvertaling lees ik: ‘Hoe zagen de mannen er uit die U op de Tabor vermoord hebt? Zij antwoordden: Ze leken op U; ieder van hen had het voorkomen van een koningszoon’. Het eindresultaat van de Amsterdamse vertaalgroep luidt: ‘Waar zijn die mannen die gij gedood hebt op de Tabor! Ik vraag mij werkelijk af of de vertalers hun publiek bij dit soort vertaal-constructies niet schromelijk overschatten. Degene die bovenstaand citaat hoort voorlezen, moet mijns inziens in een veel te krappe tijdspanne niet alleen de inhoud van de woorden begrijpen en verwerken, maar tegelijk óók nog orde scheppen in die ongewone zinsbouw. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Om voor te lezen?De typografische vormgeving van het laatstgenoemde citaat zal u ongetwijfeld zijn opgevallen. We stoten daarmee op een ander belangrijk uitgangspunt van de Amsterdamse vertaalgroep. Zoals reeds uit de ondertitel van hun publikatie blijkt, vormt het voorlezen een cruciaal punt. Teksten - zo betogen zij - zijn in de Oudheid geschreven om hardop gelezen te worden en dus te worden gehóórd. Dit betekent dat de tekst - en dus ook de vertaling die men erop baseert - moet worden ingedeeld in natuurlijke, door de wet van de menselijke ademhaling geregeerde ‘spreek-eenheden’. En aldus ontstaat, in navolging van Martin Bubers Verdeutschung, een vertaling waarin de versregels kolometrisch staan afgedrukt: ‘Het oog dat een reeks woorden op één regel ziet staan, dirigeert adem en tong om te spreken’ (Woord vooraf). Naarmate ik meer en meer kennis neem van de werkwijze en resultaten van de Societas Hebraica AmstelodamensisGa naar voetnoot7, raak ik er steeds vuriger van overtuigd dat deze vertalingen veel minder geschikt zijn om voor te lezen | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

dan wordt gesuggereerd. Ze zijn daarentegen een uitstekend hulpmiddel en leidraad bij een close reading van de tekst; men zou daarom liever moeten spreken van een vertaling om te studeren, om te lezen. Voor al degenen die het Hebreeuws niet machtig zijn is het dé manier om zo dicht als maar mogelijk is bij het origineel te komen.

selen ten grondslag liggen dan bij de vertaling van het boek Richteren het geval was. Ook hier spreekt de ondertitel boekdelen; de GNB is een ‘vertaling in de omgangstaal’Ga naar voetnoot8. Nogal wat mensen die in deze tijd met de Bijbel in aanraking komen, krijgen bij het hanteren van de traditionele bijbelvertalingen voortdurend het gevoel vast te lopen in zinswendingen en uitdrukkingen die hun in feite niets zeggen, omdat ze totaal afwijken van hun eigen taalgebruik. Voor een publiek dat de boodschap van de Bijbel graag zou vernemen, maar met de gangbare vertalingen niet voldoende uit de voeten kan, is deze Groot Nieuws-uitgave bedoeld. Daarbij is ook gedacht aan mensen die niet kerkelijk (meer) zijn. Het moge duidelijk zijn dat deze doelgroep niet geholpen wordt met een zgn. idiolecte vertaling, die zoveel mogelijk letterlijk aansluit bij het Hebreeuws of het Grieks. Deze lezers willen veeleer een tekst in handen zien die zo optimaal mogelijk feeling probeert te houden met de dagelijkse spreek- en schrijftaal. De Groot Nieuws Bijbel is daarom een voorbeeld van de zgn. dynamisch-equivalente methode van vertalen. Daarbij wordt er niet alleen op gelet dat de woorden in de vertaling een trouwe (equivalente) weergave zijn van de originele tekst. Men kijkt vooral ook of in de vertaling de intentie van de grondtekst wel voldoende wordt overgedragen (dynamisch). ‘Het gaat erom - zo lezen we in de Verantwoording - dat de vertaalde tekst zoveel mogelijk dezelfde indruk maakt op de lezer of hoorder als de oorspronkelijke tekst. Voor het taalgebruik betekent dit dat de ontvangende taal (in dit geval het Nederlands) gerespecteerd moet worden in al zijn aspecten, zoals de zinsbouw en de stijl... Als men de ontvangende taal niet alle recht doet, brengt men een vervreemding teweeg tussen de lezer en de tekst’. Terwijl de vertaling van het Nieuwe Testament in de omgangstaal - Groot Nieuws voor U (1972) - door één persoon kon worden voltooid in het tijdsbestek van drie jaar, is aan het Oude Testament door vijf vertalers (opvallend genoeg alleen mannen!) maar liefst acht jaar gewerkt. Iedere vertaler kreeg per bijbelboek een adviseur ter assistentie, een hebraicus die van dát geschrift een speciale studie heeft gemaakt. Op deze wijze hebben maar liefst twintig deskundigen uit België en Nederland - doorgaans professoren en wetenschappers van naam - hun steentje bijgedragen. Mij is opgevallen, dat dit soort informatie door dagbladrecensenten nooit wordt verstrektGa naar voetnoot9. taal eerst is ‘uitgetest’ bij een aantal lezers in Vlaanderen en Nederland, die tot de doelgroep konden worden gerekend; dus ook bij personen die weinig of niets van de Bijbel afwisten. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Geen oecumenische uitgaveDe Groot Nieuws Bijbel is in twee edities verkrijgbaar: een mét en een zónder de zgn. deuterocanonieke boeken. In de protestantse kerken houdt men zich namelijk aan het aantal boeken zoals dat voorkomt in de joodse canon. Voor lutheranen, rooms-katholieken, oosters-orthodoxen en oud-katholieken behoren echter ook geschriften als Tobit, Judith, 1 en 2 Makkabeeën, Wijsheid van Salomo, Jesus Sirach, Baruch, het Gebed van Manasse en enkele toevoegingen bij Esther en Daniël tot het Oude TestamentGa naar voetnoot10. Hoewel in de Verantwoording wordt gesuggereerd dat deze deuterocanonieke geschriften uit de (Griekse) grondtekst zijn vertaald, krijg ik sterk de indruk dat men ze, op een enkele verandering na (‘gij’ wordt ‘u’) rechtstreeks heeft overgenomen uit de Willibrordvertaling (1975) van de Katholieke Bijbelstichting. Wanneer dit inderdaad het geval is, stelt zich de interessante kwestie of deze KBS-uitgave uit 1975 dan reeds niet beschouwd dient te worden als ‘omgangstaal’! Of hebben we gewoon te maken met een economisch motief: het was eenvoudigweg te duur om deze deuterocanonieke geschriften (in vertaling 240 bladzijden) binnen zeven jaar opnieuw te laten vertalen? Jammer dat de lezer naar die motieven moet blijven gissen. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Een steekproef aan indrukkenEén van de zaken die bij het lezen van de Groot Nieuws Bijbel in het oog springt is de typografische vormgeving. Het is erg fijn dat men onmiddellijk kan vaststellen of er in het Hebreeuws sprake is van proza of van poëzie. Wie bijvoorbeeld Genesis 12 openslaat - het verhaal dat doorgaans getypeerd wordt als ‘de roeping van Abram’ - komt in deze GNB tot de ontdekking dat de eerste drie verzen poëzie zijn, terwijl de rest van het | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

hoofdstuk zich als proza presenteert. Een dergelijke observatie is niet van exegetisch belang ontbloot. Men moet namelijk weten dat Genesis 12:1-3 (dat poëtische stuk dus) algemeen wordt beschouwd als de ouverture, het programma van het Jahwistische Geschiedwerk, een soort nationaal epos dat zich uitstrekt van Abram tot SalomoGa naar voetnoot11. Met andere woorden: poëzie en proza hebben hier een uitdrukkelijk functionele betekenis. Merkwaardig vind ik dan bijvoorbeeld weer, dat de aanhef van het boek Spreuken (1:1-7) als proza wordt afgedrukt in deze GNB, terwijl in de Hebreeuwse grondtekst heel duidelijk sprake is van poëzie. Om nog even in Spreuken te blijven: erg intrigerend vind ik de werkwijze die tussen 22:22 en 24:22 is gevolgd. In Spreuken 22:20 lezen we: ‘Dertig spreuken heb ik voor je opgeschreven, wijze, goede raad’. Door een goede spatiëring en een extra nummering heeft de vertaler visueel weten te maken om welke dertig spreuken het gaat. Een dergelijke dienst aan de lezer verdient alle lof. De vertaling van Spreuken 21:21 daarentegen lijkt mij uiterst onbevredigend. Ze luidt: ‘Wie rechtvaardigheid en liefde nastreeft / zal het leven zelf vinden, en rechtvaardigheid en eer’. Dit nu is in feite een voortreffelijk voorbeeld van een... idiolecte vertaling! In het Hebreeuwse origineel staat tweemaal het woord sedaqa, dat in vertaling dan ook beide malen wordt weergegeven met ‘rechtvaardigheid’. Nu is het mijns inziens zonneklaar dat sedaqa de eerste maal gebruikt wordt in de betekenis ‘een daad van gerechtigheid stellen’, terwijl het tweede sedaqa het gevolg beschrijft van die activiteitGa naar voetnoot12. De vertaling van de tweede vershelft zou dus moeten luiden: ‘zal het leven zelf vinden, en heil en eer’ (cfr. KBS). Aangenaam verrast was ik toen ik het boek Micha doorlas. De vertaler heeft zich namelijk laten leiden door het imposante en mijns inziens baanbrekende commentaar van dr A.S. van der WoudeGa naar voetnoot13. Om de proef op de som te nemen leze men Micha 2:1-11 eerst in de NBG-uitgave (1951) en de KBS-vertaling (1975), en daarna in deze Groot Nieuws Bijbel. Wie eerlijk is, zal toegeven dat in deze laatste editie de profetische tekst eerst goed tot spreken komt. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Weglaten en toevoegenBij andere boeken in deze GNB heb ik daarentegen kritische vragen. Zo is mij bijvoorbeeld in de Gideonverhalen iets merkwaardigs opgevallen. In Richt. 6:32 lezen we: ‘Zo kwam Gideon op die dag aan de naam Jerubbaäl’. De bijbelschrijver maakt zijn lezers er dus attent op dat in het vervolg beide namen kunnen voorkomen. Maar wat er dán in GNB gebeurt is eigenaardig. In Richt. 7:1 lees ik de naam Gideon, terwijl de Hebreeuwse tekst het heeft over Jerubbaäl; hetzelfde is aan de orde in Richt. 8:29.35 en maar liefst achtmaal in Richteren 9. In dit geval ben ik de mening toegedaan dat de vertalers onnodig én overbodig werk hebben gedaan door die namen glad te strijken. De bijbeltekst zélf heeft dit probleem toch al opgelost in Richteren 6:32! Een probleem van soortgelijke aard doet zich voor in het scheppingsverhaal (Genesis 1). Ik vraag me namelijk af of het wel terecht is dat de vertalers vers 16 nogal ingrijpend hebben gewijzigd. De Hebreeuwse tekst vertelt: ‘God maakte de twee grote lampen, de grootste om over de dag te heersen, de kleinste om te heersen over de nacht’. GNB geeft: ‘God maakte de beide grote lichten, de zon om over de dag te heersen en de maan om over de nacht te heersen...’. Hier gaan de vertalers mijns inziens over de schreef. Natuurlijk is het voor iedere lezer en hoorder duidelijk dat de Hebreeuwse tekst met ‘het grootste’ de zon bedoelt en met ‘het kleinste’ de maan voor ogen heeft. De vraag die in zo'n geval gesteld dient te worden is: waarom zégt de bijbelschrijver dat dan niet in Gen. 1:16? En het antwoord hierop is: omdat de zon en de maan met name in Babylonië als belangrijke goden werden vereerd. Hier is dus een anti-Babylonische polemiek in het spel: je laat God toch geen heidense afgoden vervaardigen! We raken hier, dunkt me, aan belangrijke exegetische beginselen. Vanuit de bijbelse gedachtengang, vanuit Israëls godenkritiek mag je ‘zon’ en ‘maan’ niet toevoegen aan het verhaal, dat heel uitgewogen is gecomponeerd. Immers: ook hetgeen niét wordt gezegd blijkt een functie te vervullen! Aan de andere kant mag men ook niet wegmoffelen dat de hedendaagse lezer uit zichzelf nooit op die Babylonische achtergrond en Israëls kritiek erop zal komen. In een dergelijke spanning tussen toen en nu, tussen de grondtekst én de intentie van het verhaal, heeft de vertaler voor Genesis 1:16 op zeker moment een beslissing genomen, die tot in lengte van dagen inzet van studie en discussie moet zijn. De vertaling van het Nieuwe Testament die men in de GNB aantreft is niet geheel identiek aan Groot Nieuws voor U uit 1972; er heeft namelijk een revisie plaatsgevonden. testamentische citatenGa naar voetnoot14 in overeenstemming te brengen met de gereedgekomen vertaling van het Oude Testament. Wie het bewijs geleverd wil zien dat omgangstaal aan veranderingen onderhevig is, moet eens een passage lezen in Groot Nieuws voor U (van tien jaar geleden alweer) en vervolgens dezelfde verzen opslaan in de onlangs verschenen Groot Nieuws Bijbel. Toen ik dat voor mezelf op Mattheüs 1:18-25 uittestte, kwam ik tot het opzienbarende aantal van elf, veelal ingrijpende wijzigingen! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
VormgevingDe bladspiegel van de Groot Nieuws Bijbel lijkt erg veel op die van de zgn. ‘Nieuwe Vertaling’ (1951) van het Nederlands Bijbel Genootschap. Een uitzondering vormen de profetische boeken, die in de GNB - en terecht - als poëzie zijn afgedrukt. De cijfertjes die de verzen aanduiden zijn nogal klein uitgevallen; ik kan mij voorstellen dat menigeen er problemen mee zal hebben. Maar voor de rust die van een pagina afstraalt moesten natuurlijk elders weer concessies worden gedaan. Voor protestantse bijbeluitgaven in ons taalgebied toch een soort doorbraak acht ik het feit, dat aan elk bijbelboek een korte inleiding voorafgaat waarin - zo mogelijk - iets wordt meegedeeld over de tijd van ontstaan, opvallende kenmerken en opbouw van het betreffende geschrift. Over de illustraties in de tekst - tekeningen van de Zwitserse Annie Vallotton - heb ik mij nog geen oordeel kunnen vormen; hun functionaliteit te evalueren vraagt een langere periode van regelmatig gebruik. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
III. PsalmenToen er eind zestiger, begin zeventiger jaren driftig werd gewerkt aan de bijbeluitgave die wij sedert 1975 kennen als de Willibrordvertaling van de Katholieke Bijbelstichting, wilde het - door allerlei oorzaken - maar niet lukken om voor het boek Psalmen tijdig één of meer vertalers te vinden. Op een gegeven ogenblik was het punt bereikt dat, zelfs indien men alsnog mensen bereid vond, het gigantische project een jarenlange vertraging zou oplopen. en de literator Marie van der Zeyde de laatste hand legden aan een vertaling van het psalmenboekGa naar voetnoot15. En het is deze vertolking - strak van stijl en poëtisch van toonzetting - die in de uiteindelijke Willibrordvertaling van de KBS werd opgenomen. Nu de KBS onlangs als aparte publikatie een vertaling van de Psalmen op de markt heeft gebrachtGa naar voetnoot16, is men uiteraard nieuwsgierig te vernemen wat de precieze beweegredenen zijn geweest om deze toch wel ingrijpende stap te zetten. Ligt het in de bedoeling dat de vertaling door Gerhardt-Van der Zeyde op den duur vervangen gaat worden door deze nieuwe bundel? Of moet men eerder denken dat de KBS een alternatief heeft willen bieden aan degenen die moeite hebben met die sterk poëtische vertaling, die nogal vaak gebruik maakt van ouderwetse naamvallen en onverwachts opduikende klemtonen? Antwoord op deze vragen kan ik U niet geven, aangezien de Katholieke Bijbelstichting aan dergelijke kwesties doodeenvoudig voorbijgaat door er niets over mee te delenGa naar voetnoot17. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
De gebeden gekarakteriseerdDe publikatie, die er bijzonder verzorgd uitziet, opent met een beknopte, zakelijke inleiding, die ons informatie verschaft over de Hebreeuwse (tehilliem) en de Griekse naam (psalmoi) van het bijbelboek. We lezen er over de onderverdeling van het Psalterium in vijf bundels, over de opschriften, de stijlfiguren en het milieu waarin de liederen zijn ontstaan. Eén opmerking heb ik in deze inleiding gemist en dat betreft een vermelding over de plaats van het Psalmenboek in de joodse canon. Toch lijkt het mij ook voor een christen van belang te weten, dat met deze gebeden en liederen de derde afdeling (de ‘Geschriften’) van de Hebreeuwse canon wordt geopend (zie Lukas 24:44). In de rubriek ‘Bij de vertaling’ (p. 11) had naar mijn gevoel door de vertalers moeten worden uitgelegd waarom zij Psalm 42 en 43 als één | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

doorlopende tekst hebben afgedrukt. Wanneer men Ps. 42:6, 42:12 en 43:5 achter elkaar leest, komt men er gauw genoeg zélf achter; maar het had mijns inziens door de samenstellers verantwoord behoren te worden. De vertaling van deze twee psalmen vind ik overigens erg geslaagd. Waardering heb ik voor de wijze waarop de vertalers (vijf exegeten en een literair deskundige) elke psalm hebben pogen te karakteriseren door als opschrift een (enkele of dubbele) regel te kiezen die letterlijk in de psalm zélf voorkomt. Op deze manier voegen zij in elk geval niets toe aan de gegeven bijbeltekst. Discussie over de vraag of precies de gekozen regel het meest karakteristiek is, lijkt mij mogelijk. Psalm 104 bijvoorbeeld is in deze nieuwe vertaling getooid met het opschrift: ‘Vervuld is de aarde van zijn kunstenaarschap’, een letterlijk citaat uit vers 24. Ik zou me kunnen voorstellen dat b.v. ook vers 31 in aanmerking komt om als titel boven deze prachtige hymne te fungeren: ‘Lof zij Jahwe voor immer en altijd/hij beleve vreugde aan wat hij gemaakt heeft’. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
‘Gelukkig de mens...’In de inleiding brengen de vertalers onder woorden wat hun uitgangspunt is geweest: ‘In deze vertaling is gestreefd naar een weergave waarbij de lezer zich iets kan voorstellen...’ (p. 7). Uit dit beginselprogramma mag men dus concluderen, dat er een lichte neiging bestaat tot een dynamisch-equivalente werkwijze. Immers, de lezer van nu moet zich in de aangeboden vertaling op een of andere wijze kunnen herkennen. In dat kader wil ik met U Psalm 1 lezen in de nieuwe KBS-vertaling (met ernaast de GNB-vertaling) en er enkele kanttekeningen bij plaatsen.
Na een eerste lezing wordt al snel duidelijk dat met name het woord boze(n) de hele compositie bepaalt. We zien dat aan de inclusio of omlijsting (vers 1, vers 6), de vergelijking in vers 4 die correspondeert met die in vers 3, en het chiasme in vers 5 en 6. Nu vind ik het nogal moeilijk om mezelf bij dat begrip boze (de Hebreeuwse tekst heeft viermaal consequent een meervoud) iets concreets voor te stellen. Uit de context is duidelijk in welke sfeer we ons bevinden: ‘bozen’ zijn degenen die ‘binnen Gods bestel’ niet overeind blijven. Het zijn mensen zonder God, naar wie men niet moet luisteren. Zou in dit geval de weergave goddeloos (NBG) of wie zonder God leven (GNB) niet te verkiezen zijn? Ik ben mij er overigens wel degelijk van bewust dat de weergave die mijn voorkeur geniet (‘die het advies van goddelozen niet volgt’) óók problemen oproept. het feit dat in de vertaling ‘goddeloos’ de suggestie wordt gewekt dat ook in het Hebreeuws origineel een woord voorkomt met ‘god’ erin, hetgeen echter niet het geval is. In vers 2 val ik over het woord wet, dat een vertaling beoogt te zijn van het Hebreeuwse torah. Hier wreekt zich de invloed van de Septuaginta, de oudste (Griekse) vertaling van het Oude Testament, waar je telkens nomos leest als weergave van torah. Nu is het Hebreeuwse woord torah (afgeleid van het werkwoord jarah: onderwijzen) veel rijker dan ons woordje ‘wet’ met al zijn vervelende bijklankenGa naar voetnoot18. van Mozes, ja zelfs de héle Schrift! In de nieuwe Psalmvertaling zijn de samenstellers ten aanzien van het woord torah concordant te werk gegaan; overal treffen we dus helaas de weergave ‘wet’ aan; de enige uitzondering vormt Ps. 78:1: ‘wat ik leer’. Vers 3 confronteert ons met een ander probleem. In de KBS-vertaling lezen we in de derde regel: ‘die vrucht draagt’ en in de vijfde regel: ‘alwat hij doet draagt vrucht’. Deze weergave wekt derhalve de indruk dat we in de Hebreeuwse grondtekst ook tweemaal dezelfde formulering zullen aantreffen. De werkelijkheid is echter anders; de eerste maal staat er inderdaad ‘die vrucht draagt’ (pirjo jitten), maar in de slotregel van vers 3 geeft de grondtaal jatsliach, wat zoiets betekent als: ‘alwat hij doet gelukt’. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gewikt en gewogenZiedaar enkele problemen waarmee elke vertaler te maken krijgt, wanneer hij of zij probeert de ontvangende taal (dus het Nederlands) op dezelfde frequentie af te stemmen als waarop de gevende tekst, het Hebreeuws, uitzendt. Ik ben mij er terdege van bewust dat ik met bovenstaande kanttekeningen bij Psalm 1 de indruk kan hebben gewekt vivisectie te verrichten op woorden die zich niet kunnen verweren. Op nogal brute wijze lijk ik vertalers aan te pakken die jaren van noeste arbeid achter de rug hebben, geleerden die elk woord hebben gewikt en gewogen. Het probleem is echter dat ik dit in hun vertaling van Psalm 1 niet merk. Maar lees ik vervolgens bijvoorbeeld in Psalm 58, dan krijg ik wel degelijk het gevoel dat de vertalers op een uiterst creatieve wijze aan het werk zijn geweest. Wat een prachtige alliteratie in vers 9, een regelrechte vondst: ‘verslijmen als slakken die smelten’! Wanneer ik in Psalm 4:2 lees: ‘Geef mij ruimte waar ik klem zit’, dan is dat voor mij een pakkend beeld, een formulering waar ik mij echt iets bij voorstel. Datzelfde geldt voor de mijns inziens sprekende weergave van Psalm 89:14: ‘Een en al kracht is uw arm / uw linker gebald, uw rechter geheven’. In alle drie gevallen wint deze nieuwe Psalmenvertaling het van alle andere! Om de vertalers recht te doen zouden we eigenlijk elke psalm apart moeten bestuderen. Het spreekt voor zich dat dit voor de recensent - binnen het bestek van dit toch al lange artikel - een onmogelijke opgave is. Niet echter voor de lezer, die zich al biddend en mediterend meer en meer zal gaan thuisvoelen in deze nieuwe Psalmenuitgave. gissen, wanneer deze vertaling zich niet binnen afzienbare tijd in de liturgie, en zeker in het koorgebed, een vaste plaats zal weten te verwerven. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
EpiloogVertalen is een bijzonder ondankbaar karwei; voor de ene lezer is het te letterlijk gebeurd, voor de andere juist te vrij. Voor beide partijen geldt de vertaler als een verrader, zoals een Italiaans gezegde luidt. Eigenlijk zou elke vertaalpoging met de Schrift als inzet moeten citeren uit de Prologos, het Woord Vooraf, dat de kleinzoon van Jesus Sirach heeft geschreven toen hij het Hebreeuwse origineel van zijn grootvader in het Grieks vertaalde: ‘Er wordt dus van u verwacht, dat u het welwillend en aandachtig zult willen lezen en het ons ten goede zult willen houden, wanneer het de indruk zou maken dat wij, ondanks de aan de vertaling bestede moeite, sommige wendingen onvoldoende hebben weergegeven. Want bij de weergave in een andere taal drukken de woorden niet ten volle uit wat er in het Hebreeuwse origineel te lezen staat...’Ga naar voetnoot19.
