Het politieke vormingstheater op zoek naar zichzelf

gezocht. Het werd ingeschakeld als instrument bij het activeren, bevestigen of uitlokken van politieke bewustzijnsprocessen. Het blijft een te respecteren uitgangspunt; problemen doen zich pas voor bij de uitwerking ervan. Er viel nogal wat onvermogen te constateren om de dingen die hen en hun publiek bezighielden, uit te schrijven en in beeld te brengen. Teleurstellend bleef vooral de dramaturgische vaardigheid die nodig is voor een goed concept van de te behandelen materie en voor een efficiënte verantwoording van het gekozen standpunt. Anekdotisch, eenzijdig, oppervlakkig bleef de vertelkern. De speelstijl was, behalve acteertechnisch te vaak gebrekkig en daardoor inefficiënt, vooral te weinig gebaseerd op een bewuste werkwijze; triviale opendoekjes waren daar altijd wel bij te behalen, vooral als die sloegen op het instemmen met een reeds vóór de voorstelling aanwezig bewustzijn. Te zelden echter waren er theatrale strategieën te onderscheiden die de actualiteit, de noodzaak en het gelijk van de behandelde problemen konden funderen en overbrengen. Wat bovendreef was sentiment, ongenuanceerdheid, zelfbevestiging. De voorstelling noopte zelden tot verderdenken en handelend zelfstandig worden. Wat aangeboden werd, was al bij de afloop van de opvoering affirmatief voltooid en het heeft dan ook geen enkel maatschappelijk proces op gang gebracht. Het blijft een vraag waar deze groepen te situeren zijn. Hun erkenbare identiteit bleef afhankelijk van de toevallige, ongelede lijn van de doelgroep. Interne groepsdiscussie gaf ieder van deze gezelschappen weliswaar een meer bewust perspectief, maar in de voorstelling zelf was dit onvoldoende terug te vinden. De artistieke herkenbaarheid bleef te vaag, te dicht in de buurt van goedbedoelende bereidwilligheid, te vaak ook amper het paternalisme ontlopend. Deze artistieke troebelheid heeft beslist ook te maken met de maatschappelijke voorwaarden waarin deze groepen werken. Hoe lang kan een politieke theatergroep blijven doorgaan als er in de politieke voorwaarden helemaal niets blijkt te veranderen in de socialistische zin die de groep voorstaat en als het aantal geïnteresseerden beperkt blijft? Voortdurend dreigt hier het risico repetitief en meteen conservatief te worden, artistiek in het niemandsland te opereren, thematische inteelt te bedrijven. Onmiddellijke ervaring resp. ervaarbaarheid missen dan alle ruimer perspectief; wat voor de groep en de toeschouwers als einddoel programmatisch vooropstaat, kan niet meer gedemonstreerd worden in de ervaring van alledag. De groep kleedt dan een wat moeizaam verzonnen verhaal dramatisch in; analyseerbaarheid van dat verhaal lijkt dan geen punt van uitgang of overleg. Er is altijd wel enige politieke houding, maar de artistieke ‘taal’ ontbreekt om die houding functioneel uit te drukken. | |

En dit moet voor een theatergroep, ook en wellicht vooral als ze ‘enkel’ van het theater als instrument gebruik wil maken, toch de eerste opdracht zijn. Van de esthetische waarde en kracht van het produkt - dramaturgische organisatie van de stof, theatrale structurering van de intenties - hangt immers ook het overtuigingsgehalte af, vooral het politieke. Mensen zijn niet zo eenvoudig en simplistisch als ze in de stukken van het vormingstheater herhaaldelijk afgebeeld werden, vooral eenvoudige mensen niet. Aan dit slag onderschatting van de complexiteit van de doelgroepen ging de effectwerking vaak ten onder. Dat wil niet zeggen dat de groep zijn publiek doorlopend moet voorhouden hoe knap ze toch wel zijn in het ontwerpen, verantwoorden en uitspelen van bewustmakingsprocessen; aan het tonen echter van de artistieke resultaten van dit vermogen mag dit theater zich niet onttrekken, omdat precies hierin de politiserende gevolgtrekking bereikbaar wordt. Deze groepen hadden zichzelf, in hun recrutering en in hun manier van werken, de voorwaarden moeten opleggen waardoor het gehalte, de draagwijdte, de actieradius, de aanspreekbaarheid van hun produkt gegarandeerd beter werden. Het voortbestaan van politieke theatergroepen hangt nu toch wel te veel af van de (criteria- en niveauloze) duldzaamheid van de overheid (of haar advieslichamen) en te weinig van het eigen interne dynamisme. Als het vormingstheater thans dreigt weg te vallen, dan bezwijkt het veeleer aan zichzelf, en slechts heel relatief aan een gewijzigde conjunctuur die de haast biologische trend naar politiek luidkeels theater momenteel tot zwijgen brengt. | |
EmotionaliteitIn de dag- en weekbladpers werd in al deze jaren het roerige bestaan van het vormingstheater slechts mondjesmaat gesignaleerd; ook elders is de analyse van dit tijdsfenomeen grotendeels uitgeblevenGa naar voetnoot4. Alleen de Vrije Universiteit Brussel heeft het tienjarig bestaan van deze theatertendens aangegrepen om de stand van zaken op te meten. In 1978 werd daar een Werkgroep Vormingstheater opgericht die tot nog toe in drie publikaties haar werkzaamheid openbaar heeft gemaakt. Werd in de eerste bundel | |

opstellen veeleer een atlas van te noteren pogingen opgesteld, dan getuigde de tweede bundel, rapport van een colloquium, van de al iets kritischer behoefte om resultaat en evaluatie samen te leggen. In een derde aflevering heeft thans de Werkgroep getracht het verleden ook een verse toekomst mee te gevenGa naar voetnoot5. Essentieel opereert de Werkgroep zonder methodisch valnet en zonder theoretische eenheidsdefinitie van het onderzoeksobject; wat ze samen houdt is meer een grondvlak van materialistische levensbeschouwing. Dat is bij sommigen intuïtief en vanzelfsprekend, bij anderen uitgesproken doctrinair. Bepaalde medewerkers hanteren een consequente logica en bereiken hoe dan ook herkenbare conclusies; anderen formuleren een vrijblijvend behoeftencomplex en dat reikt bij gelegenheid wel tot een opinie, maar die is niet na te produceren of te toetsen. De impressionistische optie, de zichzelf gelijk gevende uitspraak domineert. Dit derde deel onthult nochtans een opvallende cesuur. De Werkgroep acht de rationaliteit (voor de werkwijze van het Vormingstheater een toch te dik woord) van het voorbije werkpatroon achterhaald; zij richt thans alle aandacht op de emotionaliteit van de voorstellingen (zonder uit te zoeken of wellicht emotiviteit een betere begripsterm was). Ze is bijgevolg bereid voortaan (eindelijk?) politieke zingeving aan te treffen in theateropvoeringen die niet per se door zich als vormingstheater presenterende groepen aangeboden worden. Emotionaliteit mag de vlag zijn, de lading is wel erg heterogeen; andermaal kon geen overeenstemming over een eenheidsdefinitie bereikt worden en de opvattingen staan meermaals haaks op elkaar. Zo tracht D. Van Berlaer vanuit een weidse humanistische cirkel het begrip te differentiëren waarbij de ik-betrokkenheid voorop komt te staan. Omdat ze in de maatschappij de dominantie van het systeemdenken constateert, ontdekt ze als tactisch tegengif in de toch te cultische idee van het onderbewuste de mogelijkheid tot fundering van een ‘self’; de terugtocht op de intimiteit bevestigt de macht van het systeem en de emotionaliteit (is het emotie? of sentiment? of affect?) kan enkel fungeren als stoorfactor. Deze fatalistische visie (tegenover een vormingstheater dat altijd een optimistische geloofsbelijdenis in de haalbare utopie heeft verkondigd) tref je | |

bij de vorige medewerkers niet meer aan; iedereen wordt in zijn eigen gelijk geduld. Dat is mooi voor het onderlinge respect, maar de samenhang van de uiteenlopende stellingen wordt er niet beter door. P. De Bruyne weigert emotioneel reactiegedrag los te koppelen van ideologische inhoud; zijn betoog bouwt op de behoefte het theater als motor voor politieke gedragsvormen te radicaliseren. Hoe dat bewust gebeuren kan, zet H. Van Maanen uiteen. Alle nadruk valt op de strategie waarmee theatermakers elementen integreren die zich dan bij de toeschouwers emotioneel manifesteren; met deze manifeste emoties kan dan een politieke houding gefundeerd. Het lijkt wel een pleidooi voor systematische manipulatie en ze laat bepaald te weinig ruimte voor de autonomie van de enkeling. Beide auteurs blijven zweren bij de historische geloofspunten van het Vormingstheater; ze zijn wel erg duidelijk en zelfs sectaristisch, in tegenstelling tot de overige medewerkers, die op zoek zijn naar een houding en verhouding. M. Van Kerkhoven onderzoekt vervolgens, met het personage als sleutelbegrip, de eerste fase van het Vormingstheater; toen werd geprefabriceerde ideologie uitgebeeld als overdracht van intentie, terwijl thans de mogelijkheid tot persoonlijke revolte bij de recipiënt voorop zou staan. Ook D. Van Berlaer poogt de wat bejaarde categorieën van de dramatheorie te redden voor een gewijzigde context; zij onderscheidt de conflictstructuur tussen aangeboden beeld en geconditioneerde toeschouwer, wat het principe van het ‘meervoudig ik’ impliceert, dat in een telkens subjectief proces van ‘kritische katharsis’ de emotionele reactie (als stoorfactor) hanteert. L. Van den Dries pakt het zo moeilijke begrip van de identificatie aan; hij wijst (terecht, maar een nieuwe waarheid is het wel niet) op het gevaar dat het publiek zijn eigen gelijk bevestigd wenst te zien, ook als de voorstelling een multifocaal standpunt wenst aan te bieden. Het begrip focus (bepaling van aandachtsintensiteit) neemt hij trouwens niet op; het ingewikkelde proces waarin bezoekers tot toeschouwers worden, tekenmomenten tot een cognitief bewustzijn promoveren, verwaarloost hij volledig. Zijn methode is het intuïtionisme. Daarom kan zijn slotopstel, waarin hij de vertegenwoordigde standpunten samenvoegt, niet verder komen dan tot lood-in-water-patronen waarmee alle denkbare impulsen onkritisch gerespecteerd blijven. heeft meer te maken met persoonlijke belijdenis dan met hard te maken empirisch inzicht. De discussie is ver van afgesloten. Deze derde publikatie is niet zonder reliëf, maar ze brengt globaal de discussie van het politieke vormingstheater nauwelijks verder. | |
TheaterwetenschapHet operationele begrip emotionaliteit glipt de Werkgroep nog steeds door de vingers, niet omdat de individuele bijdragen er geen bestemming aan weten te geven, maar omdat ze er ieder voor zich een andere dimensie aan toekennen. Dat de collectieve thesis in een context wordt geduwd waarin de verhouding tussen vorm en inhoud een probleemstelling wordt, maakt het achterhoedegevecht evident. Enige voorkennis in semiotische zin kon deze relatie als knoop uitschakelen; dan werd inhoud vorm en vorm inhoud. Om tot een analyse van theatervoorstellingen te komen is minder een ideologische uiteenzetting nodig dan een steviger kennis van de mediale instrumenten om een theaterprodukt analyseerbaar te maken. Niet of emotionaliteit met subjectiviteit samenvalt is het dringende discussiepunt, wel of en op welke wijze geïntendeerde en in de opvoering als theatrale tekens aangeboden momenten bij de individuele toeschouwer al dan niet in staat zijn te werken met enige ideologische potentie. De groep lijdt kennelijk aan een complex waarin tegelijk de vrijwaring van het subjectieve recht hoog aangeschreven staat, maar de doorwerking naar een gemeenschapsresultaat in de vooropgezette politieke dimensie tevens begin en eindpunt blijft. Wat er in de toeschouwer omgaat, over welk perceptievermogen hij beschikt, met welke beslissingsstrategieën hij is uitgerust, volgens welke patronen van voorspelbaarheid (of juist niet) hij reageert op tekens (van welke aard), blijft hier methodisch buiten de belangstelling. Het boek beantwoordt uiteindelijk meer aan de poging de eigen tijdspositie te bevestigen dan aan een wetenschappelijke uiteenzetting. Schommelend tussen koele Gramscianen, neo-existentialisten en conjunctuurroddelaars, vertegenwoordigen de meeste medewerkers de radeloosheid van het linkse militantisme dat met zijn vele vragen is blijven zitten, geen voortgang ziet naar een realisering van de eigen verlangens toe en zich vervolgens op het theater heeft gestort om, toch meer voor eigen baat, daar althans de mogelijkheid te ontdekken dat het niet allemaal hopeloos is. Het politieke theater staat dan minder voor een waarde binnen een maatschappelijke context dan voor een wensdroom binnen de subjectieve zelfbevestiging. De bundel slaagt er dan ook niet in wezenlijke vooruitgang te boeken in de analyseerbaarheid van de wijze waarop maatschappelijkheid | |

en theaterkunst op elkaar te betrekken zijn. Een niet volmondig toegegeven skepsis tegenover doctrinaire gezichtspunten gaat er alsnog toe over subjectieve behoeften uit te roepen tot een impressionistisch-geobjectiveerde methodiek. Zo kan de groep nog jaren doorgaan; het wetenschappelijk-produktieve niveau wordt er niet beter van. Medewerker H. Van Maanen sprak ondertussen zelf de mening uit dat in dit Brusselse onderzoek ‘het publiek (...) als een abstracte categorie’ wordt opgevat, ‘waarvan de leden geen concrete maatschappelijke posities innemen van waaruit ze zich van toneel bedienen’, terwijl hij juist ‘de voorstelling als tussenkomst in een werkelijkheid’ zietGa naar voetnoot7. Van Maanens eigen radicaliteit blijft te Brussel getemperd tot aarzelen; vandaar de permanente vaagheid, de meandermethode, de onderlinge tegenspraak, de uiteindelijke patstelling. Van Maanen tracht vanuit een partijdige opvatting door te dringen tot geobjectiveerde bevindingen van wat toeschouwers in politieke theatervoorstellingen meemaken en meedragen, zodat hieruit consequenties voor hun maatschappelijke gedrag voortkomen. Hij richt zich niet op een denkbeeldige (en allerminst subjectieve) toeschouwersreceptie, maar tracht te achterhalen welke factoren het waarnemingsgedrag binnen de conventie van het theatergebeuren determineren en op welke wijze ze gemobiliseerd en gemanipuleerd kunnen worden, zodat daaruit een toeschouwersintentionaliteit ontstaat die zich concreet uitdrukt in hun maatschappelijk gedrag. Van Maanen situeert zijn voorkeur bij de functionalistische bepaling van het waarom van theater in deze tijd. De Brusselse groep heeft enige duidelijkheid hieromtrent met succes vermeden. Van Maanens hypothese stelt hem ertoe in staat aan te tonen dat het theaterwetenschappelijke onderzoek dient uit te gaan naar de functie van de produktieverhoudingen binnen het theater, tussen spelers en toeschouwers. Tot binnen zijn denkraam logische maar niettemin eenzijdige opdracht verklaart hij dan mee te helpen aan de ontwikkeling van een dramaturgie waarin de individuele produktiviteit werkt in functie van toeschouwerscollectieven. Pas dan is er een moment bereikt waarin de discussie over de vormen en de consequenties van emotionaliteit zinvol want functioneel wordt. Dat moment wordt in het Brusselse onderzoek opgeschort; het resultaat is tijdverlies. De crisis van de kritiek op het Vormingstheater, zoals althans te Brussel toegegeven, legt veeleer een vernauwd begrip van de opvatting van theaterweten- | |

schap bloot; wetenschap houdt zich niet op met bewijsvoering voor wishful-thinking-tactiek maar met de analyseerbaarheid van de theatermiddelen en het interactieproces. | |
En het Vormingstheater vandaag?Als de signalen niet bedriegen, ontwikkelt zich binnen de resterende groepen een tendens naar sterkere aandacht voor de theatraliteit. Daarmee doen ze niet veel meer dan zich aansluiten, hoe laattijdig ook, bij wat zich internationaal al lang doorgezet heeft en wat voor de Brusselse werkgroep reeds in grote mate als voorbeeld en aanleiding tot analyse heeft gefungeerd (b.v. Pip Simmons, The Wooster Group, Het Werktheater). De woorden van zelfbeklag en gewetensonderzoek die Proloog over zichzelf uitstort, betreffen veeleer het voorbije gelijk dan de in uitzicht gestelde identiteitGa naar voetnoot8. Wie theatraal om zich heen heeft gekeken, weet dat b.v. de lichamelijke speelwijze, de gewijzigde relatie tot het publiek, de ideologisering van de voorstelling bijgedragen hebben tot nieuwe theatercodes. Veel ergernis en onbegrip bij overheid en publiek is voorlopig uitgekomen op een inderdaad ander theater. Dit nieuwe theater sluit zich niet op in één code; alle varianten staan breeduit ter beschikking. Zo vertrekt de Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz (vroeger am Halleschen Ufer) Berlijn vanuit een filosofisch-ideologisch concept, gebruikt de resultaten van het theateronderzoek en slaagt erin het theatertheoretische fundament en de maatschappijvernieuwende praktijk overtuigend te laten samenvallen. Zo vetrekt het Théâtre du Soleil Parijs vanuit de intuïtieve behoefte aan een andere maatschappijbeleving, werkt zonder theoretische veiligheidspolis, zweert bij de pragmatische improvisatie en het creatieve empirisme en tovert al-dan-niet-utopische theaterdromen voor die de wijziging van de maatschappelijke realiteit theatraal communiceren. Zonder een vaak eenzijdige koppigheid in het zoeken naar een andere tekentaal, zonder de vaak ergerlijke verwerping van eeuwen dramatische traditie, zonder de vaak kinderlijke brutaliteit tegenover de gevestigde theaterstructuur was dit resultaat niet mogelijk. Wil het theater aanspraak maken op een functie in een maatschappelijke context, dan zal het bereid moeten blijven zichzelf voortdurend te problematiseren en te veranderen. | |

Dit vooronderstelt een noodzakelijke periode van chaos. Die chaos hebben we ondertussen al meegemaakt: het opportunisme van happening, environment en performance, de ritualisering van het banale, het olympische exhibitionisme, de manipulatie van onverdorven publieksgroepen, de gekostumeerde revolutie, de getheatraliseerde maatschappij. Al deze theatermomenten hebben handig gebruik gemaakt van het teruggevonden accent op lichaam en stem, hebben het masker naar binnen gekeerd of het kostuum afgegooid, hebben de toneelrol ingeruild voor een maatschappelijke taak of de sociale functie uitgebouwd tot een politieke rol. Het is vaak niet meer dan symptoom, wordt geen instrument. Maar het is tegelijk onomkeerbaar, want onmisbaar. Alleen indien het theater (h)erkenbaar wordt als een gebeuren dat vanuit zichzelf, vanuit zijn immanente procesvorm, zijn bestaansgeheimen prijs geeft, lijkt het mij in staat de menselijke situatie op een gegeven historisch ogenblik, dat alleen het hier-en-nu kan zijn, zichtbaar te maken, en wel zo zichtbaar dat de altijdse dimensies gericht zijn op die constante behoeften die de mens over zichzelf heen doen klimmen en oriënteren op wat hij als mens tussen de mensen worden wil en kan. Het leidt, toegegeven in de zeldzame gevallen, tot een onverbrekelijke eenheid van sociale barricadepositie en esthetische expressiecode. Maar het is er overal en altijd om begonnen, om het even of het een succes wordt of niet. Met deze fundamentele drang ligt elk vermoeden van de wijze waarop de toeschouwer daar aansluiting bij vindt, of cognitief of emotief en waarschijnlijkst nog via beider vervlechting, onlosmakelijk verbonden. |
