De belangstelling voor het exlibris is tegenwoordig groot. Dat komt ondermeer doordat er steeds weer nieuwe grafici, met andere boekmerken, zich aandienen.
Om de twee jaar wordt er, ergens ter wereld, een internationaal exlibriscongres gehouden waar honderden liefhebbers van exlibris elkaar treffen en ideeën uitwisselen over kunstenaars, technieken en stijlen. Bovendien heeft bijna ieder land in Europa een exlibris-vereniging en jaarlijks worden door deze verenigingen bijeenkomsten georganiseerd.
Voor veel verzamelaars zijn exlibriswedstrijden een impuls voor het laten vervaardigen van een boekmerk. De stad
Sint-Niklaas organiseert, in samenwerking met het Ministerie van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, iedere twee jaar een exlibriswedstrijd. Vorig jaar konden exlibris met het thema sprookjes en sagen worden ingezonden. De vereniging Tiecelijn-Reijnaert schreef in 1996 een wedstrijd uit met, hoe kan het anders, de vos Reijnaert als onderwerp. De stad

van Uilenspiegels Kring, een internationale exlibriswedstrijd ‘Tijl Uilenspiegel’.
Opdrachtgevers, geboeid door het verhaal en met belangstelling voor de literaire cultuur van hun land, zullen bij dergelijke wedstrijden een extra stimulans krijgen om literaire boekmerken te laten maken. Uiteraard is het te hopen dat al deze exlibris ook hun weg vinden naar het betreffende boek.
Het is zinvol om tenslotte even stil te staan bij de grote hoeveelheid kleingrafiek die in de exlibriskunst jaarlijks rechtstreeks van kunstenaar naar opdrachtgever gaat. Er zijn weinig of geen disciplines in de beeldende kunst waar zoveel kunstwerken op deze wijze hun weg vinden.
Wanneer kunst een vorm van communicatie is dan geldt dat in belangrijke mate voor exlibris. Bovendien wordt dit communiceren in een democratische context geplaatst, want bij de totstandkoming van een boekmerk kan de beïnvloeding tussen kunstenaar en opdrachtgever wederzijds zijn.
