Corrections and Additions
Professor Praz sent also a long list of corrections and additions to his bibliography. He writes:
Sinse my Bibliography of Emblem Books was published in 1947, Miss Rosemary Freeman has published her English Emblem Books (London, Chatto and Windus, 1948) with a Bibliography of English Emblem Books to 1700; there have appeared besides a few important catalogues containing emblem books, namely, the very extensive Liste 156 L'Art Ancien, Zurich, cat. n. 3 of Nicolas Rauch S.A., Mies, Vaud (Switzerland), the Catalogue n. 149 (1950) of the International Antiquariaat, Amsterdam (including... a series of Dutch emblem-books). Omissions and corrections in my Bibliography have been pointed out by L'Art Ancien catalogue, by Miss Freeman (in her review in The Review of English Studies for January 1950, pp. 72-3), and by Merritt Y. Hughes (in his review in The Modern Language Review, Vol. XLV, No. 2, April 1950). Prof. Hughes, however, commits a curious oversight, when he says that for Maurice Sève ‘there is room for little more than bare mention in either of Professor Praz's volumes’. Maurice Sève of Scève, as I spell his name, is amply dealt with in the first volume of my Studies in Seventeenth-Century Imagery, and is adequately listed in my Bibliography. All these publications contain several suggestions for improvements to be introduced into my Bibliography.

Praz, p. 1: |
A., H. Partheneia Sacra. - Miss Freeman, in the Appendix 3 to her book, shows that it is extremely unlikely that H.E. was Herbert (not in any case Henry) Aston, as Fr. Gervase Mathew suggested before me, and finds it difficult ‘to establish any strong case against Hawkins' authorship’. |

(The first edition contains 74 emblems: in the second and later editions these were reduced to 49 and many alterations made in the text). Praz, p. 34: |
CAMERARIUS, J. - According to Andresen, Deutscher Peintre-graveur, II, p. 385 ff., n. 139, the artist is not Hans Schroder, but Hans Sibmacher. The portrait mentioned is probably a grangorized one. |
