Vestdijk en de religie
Wanneer wij op deze bladzijden enkele gedachten willen wijden aan Vestdijk en de religie, dan valt ons oog vanzelfsprekend onmiddellijk op De toekomst der religie, het boek dat in 1947 het licht zag, en waarvan de toenmalige theologen verschrikt het hoofd afwendden. Zij haastten zich om fouten op te sporen in het werk, - Vestdijk zou het begrip ‘geloof’ niet op zijn juiste waarde hebben geschat, hij zou het begrip ‘projectie’ verkeerd geïnterpreteerd hebben, hij zou op verkeerde gronden hebben aangetoond dat het christendom zal verdwijnen in de toekomst, hij zou van oosterse religie te weinig hebben begrepen en hij zou de socialistische idealen ten onrechte religieus hebben genoemd. Dit alles ondanks het feit dat hij met een formidabele kennis van zaken de religie en alles wat daarmee samenhangt heeft voorgelegd aan zijn lezers. Maar laten wij, na ruim dertig jaar, eens gaan zien wat hij ons heeft willen duidelijk maken.
Hij heeft zich om te beginnen gerealiseerd dat men de geesteswetenschappen anders moet benaderen dan de exacte. Bij de geesteswetenschappen is men in beslissende mate aangewezen op intuïtie en verbeeldingskracht, vooral bij een zo subjectief verschijnsel als religie. Maar, vindt Vestdijk, men moet zulke verschijnselen zo lang mogelijk begeleiden met een kritische geest. Er kan zodoende een compromis ontstaan tussen de bespiegelende geest en de kritische. Vestdijk wil daarbij gebruik maken van de psychologie, wat voor de hand ligt bij zaken die de geest betreffen. Hij koos voor de z.g. ‘verstehende’ psychologie, dat is een psychologie die er op uit is om te begrijpen wat de bespiegelende geest wil. Met dit uitgangspunt trachtte hij een definitie te vinden die het begrip religie zo dicht mogelijk benadert.
Hij constateerde dat religie een zeer véél omvattend begrip is, dat zijn oorsprong vindt in het verlangen van de mens, van iedere mens, van alle mensen van alle tijden, om gelukkig te zijn. De mensen hebben altijd naar een gelukkig leven gestreefd; ook wij zijn daar heden ten dage nog volop mee bezig. Vestdijk onderscheidt een aards geluk en een geestelijk geluk. Het eerste is van ‘aardse’ aard, een succesvolle carrière bijvoorbeeld, of voorspoed in het gezin, - zaken, waaraan gemakkelijk door onverwachte omstandigheden een einde kan komen. Het tweede richt zich op een geestelijk geluk van duurzame aard dat door niets is aan te tasten. Alleen het streven naar het laatste is religieus, zegt Vestdijk. Het is een religieus verlangen, dat zich richt op een ideaal dat vanzelfsprekend nooit bereikt kan worden. Maar daar is het een ideaal voor. Idealen zijn er om er naar te streven.
In de loop van eeuwen en eeuwen is het religieuze ideaal verzichtbaard in volmaakte mensgestalten bij verschillende hogere religies. We vinden Boeddha en Krishna bijvoorbeeld in de Indische godsdiensten, Christus bij ons in het Christendom. Deze volmaakte mensgestalten - ten dele historisch, ten dele mythologisch (wat niet ter zake doet, omdat het alleen maar gaat om de werkzaamheid van deze gestalten in onze geest) - stammen volgens de overlevering af van een godheid. In het christendom is Christus de zoon van de christelijke god. Vestdijk legt de psychologisch gang van zaken bij zulke overleveringen als volgt uit. De idee van de absolute volmaaktheid is niet te beschrijven, nauwelijks voor te stellen. Dat wat er kenbaar aan gemaakt kon worden kreeg de gestalte van een volmaakte mens, bij ons dus Christus. God is het ónkenbare deel van de absolute volmaaktheid, God is niet te ‘kennen’. En van iets wat we niet kúnnen ‘kennen’, mogen we evengoed zeggen dat het niet bestaat.
‘Ha’, roepen de theologen, ‘omdat ge Hem niet kent, ontkent ge Hem maar, voor de gladheid van uw betoog. Maar ge hebt Hem al een naam gegeven, ge hebt al erkend dat Hij onkenbaar is, dus Hij bestaat wel degelijk’. Een godsbewijs van de koude grond natuurlijk, want de theologen kunnen hem evenmin ‘kennen’ als de ongelovigen. We zouden ons kunnen voorstellen dat bijvoorbeeld natuurwetenschappers de mogelijkheid openhouden voor het bestaan van natuurkrachten waarvan ze nog geen weet hebben. Deze wetenschappers laten de ongekende krachten voor wat ze zijn, en als deze zich te gelegener tijd openbaren, dan pas zullen zij er zich over buigen. De theologen doen het anders. Die hangen aan iets wat ze niet kennen letterlijk alles op, en ze hebben er een systeem van gemaakt waarvoor de halve mensheid het hoofd gebogen heeft. Een staaltje van onwetenschappelijkheid dat zelfs in de geesteswetenschappen zijn weerga niet vindt.
Hoe komt een mens, zo vroeg Vestdijk zich af, aan zulk een nooit te bereiken religieus ideaal? Het ideaal van een staat van duurzaam geestelijk geluk, dat door niets is aan te tasten? Heel eenvoudig, omdat de mens eens in zulk een staat geleefd heeft, zij het geheel onbewust. Wij allen hebben tot ons tweede of derde levensjaar geleefd in een gelukzalige toestand, waarin we ons één voelden met al het omringende. We leefden in een sfeer van totaliteit, waarin het subject zich nog niet onderscheidde van de rest van de wereld. We leefden ons uit met inzet van álle aandriften waarover we beschikten, - en mocht er al eens een vijand het op ons totale geluk voorzien hebben - honger bijvoorbeeld, of kou, of pijn - dan snelden de algoede moeder of vader toe om de vijand te verjagen en ons te voeden en te warmen en te troosten.
Bij het ouder worden kwam het subject langzaam te voorschijn uit de totaliteit. We werden ons personen en dingen bewust, de innige verbondenheid met het omringende viel langzaam uiteen, we werden hoe langer hoe meer ‘onszelf’, - maar eerst in de volwassenheid beseften we het paradijs van het totale geluksbeleven voorgoed verloren te hebben. Dit klinkt ietwat pathetisch, maar deze schets is noodzakelijk, aangezien het kinderlijke totaliteitsbeleven essentieel is voor het te vormen begrip van ons religieuze ideaal, dat - zoals gezegd - bij ons gestalte kreeg in de figuur van Christus. Het kinderlijke totaliteitsbeleven is de schakel die de verbinding legt tussen onszelf en het ideaalbeeld, de enige. Alleen het kind beschikt over het vermogen om volledig op te gaan in alles wat zijn verrukking gaande maakt, alleen het kind kent de totale overgave aan de liefde, die - geheel onbewust natuurlijk - in hem leeft, onverschillig of het object van zijn liefde de moeder is of zijn speelgoeddier, het paard van de melkboer of een oude schoen.

toegerust, waaraan we vanzelfsprekend hoedanigheden toevoegden die nu juist niét des kinds zijn, zoals volledigheid op het stuk van bewustheid, inzicht, wijsheid, karakteradel, integriteit, offerbereidheid, enz. Maar de liefde is de voornaamste hoedanigheid van het religieuze ideaalbeeld, de liefde die niets of niemand buitensluit en die met alle genoemde en niet genoemde kostelijke eigenschappen versmelt.

Drie typen van religie
De bron van alle gelukzaligheidsverlangen ligt in onze prille jeugd, dat is het eerste punt dat we met behulp van de ‘verstehende’ psychologie bereikt hebben. Hoe het zijn weg vindt in verschillende mogelijkheden zullen we met Vestdijk gaan bekijken. Strikt genomen, zegt hij, zijn er evenveel mogelijkheden als mensen om het volmaakte geluk na te streven. Maar aangezien hij in De toekomst der religie schematiseren wilde, koos hij voor drie mogelijkheden, waartussen vanzelfsprekend vloeiende overgangen bestaan. Van de al te primitieve godsdiensten heeft Vestdijk slechts terloops gewag gemaakt; de hogere vormen kregen zijn volle aandacht, al zag hij de eerstgenoemde als een voorstadium van de laatste.
De eerste mogelijkheid om het volmaakte geluk te benaderen heeft Vestdijk ondergebracht bij een religievorm die hij het metafysisch projecterende type noemde. De mens die zich hier het beste bij bevindt heeft ingezien dat het onmogelijk is om tijdens het leven het volmaakte geluk te bereiken. Daarom projecteert hij een ideaal toestand die eerst na de dood mogelijk wordt: de eeuwige zaligheid van de hemel met God de vader, diens zoon Christus, de engelen en de heiligen en ergens vaag de heilige geest. Zo althans leeft het bij de christelijk gelovige. Ter verduidelijking tekenen wij hierbij aan dat, waar het metafysisch projecterende type ter sprake komt, we steeds het oog op het christendom zullen richten, omdat dat ons het meest vertrouwd is. De metafysisch projecterende mens heeft zich losgemaakt van zijn projectie, - of liever, hij heeft zijn projectie losgemaakt van zichzelf. God de vader compareert in zijn leven als een zelfstandige almacht die alles beheerst. De schaduwzijde hiervan is dat de mens zichzelf met deze projectie een brevet van onvermogen heeft gegeven. God is alles, dus is hij niets, of maar zeer weinig, althans zeer onvolmaakt, zeer gebrekkig, en vooral zeer zondig. Opvoeding en traditie hebben dit besef in beslissende mate onderstreept. Er is met de metafysische projectie een desintegratie in het menselijk denken geslopen, die Vestdijk funest acht voor de karaktervorming. Maar hierover straks meer.
De tweede mogelijkheid om het volmaakte geluk te benaderen heeft Vestdijk het sociale type genoemd. De mens die zich hier het beste bij bevindt, is niet tevreden met een volmaakt geluk na de dood, hij wil nu, tijdens het leven het volmaakte geluk zien te bereiken, en hij richt hiertoe zijn religieuze drang op de medemens, en niet op een almachtige grootheid buiten hemzelf. Daar weet hij niets mee aan te vangen. De medemens krijgt zijn liefde en toewijding, alle mensen hebben recht op geluk, en daaraan wil hij werken. Evenals het metafysisch projecterende geloof is het sociale geloof in een systeem gevangen, en evenals het eerste bereikt ook het tweede het einddoel. Het verschil is echter dat de christelijk gelovige zich hierbij neerlegt, en de sociaal gelovige niet, omdat zijn geloof in het te bereiken ideaal tot de reële mogelijkheden behoort. De sociaal-gelovige vergeet echter maar al te vaak dat de aardse weg naar het volmaakte geluk een zeer lánge weg is, slechts stap voor stap te gaan. Teleurstelling en wrok blijven vaak niet uit.
De derde weg naar het volmaakte geluk vindt Vestdijk in het mystiek-introspectieve type. De mens die zichzelf het beste hierin vindt is van een zeer bijzonder gehalte. Deze mens wil niet ná de dood de zaligheid deelachtig worden, hij zoekt haar evenmin in de gemeenschap, - hij wil zijn geestelijke vermogens tot volle ontplooiing brengen om zodoende het volmaakte geluk te smaken. Het hele wereldbeeld, met inbegrip van het goddelijke of de volmaaktheid is immers aan de menselijke geest ontsproten, - dan moet het ook mogelijk zijn om de geest tot het volmaakte op te heffen. Maar de ‘werkers aan zichzelf’ vinden we hier in het westen nauwelijks. In het oosten heeft Boeddha voor deze weg de voorschriften gegeven. Het is een lange, moeizame weg, voor slechts enkele begaafden met succes te begaan. Maar een klein eindje, vindt Vestdijk, loont deze weg toch ook al de moeite. Het gaat hier in eerste aanzet om inzicht in de eigen psychische drijfveren. Het is een eerste stap op weg naar een hogere wijsheid.

Ouderbinding een hinderpaal bij religieuze ontplooiing
Alle drie de hier uiterst beknopt beschreven typen van religie hebben volgens Vestdijk één belangrijk obstakel op hun verschillende wegen naar het religieuze einddoel gemeen. Dat obstakel is de ouderbinding. Hieraan dient men zich te ontworstelen, - men moet niet blijven hangen in de zorgeloze jeugd, waarin angsten en noden door een liefdevolle ouderhand zoveel mogelijk werden weggeschoven. Men moet ‘zijn eigen boontjes leren doppen’. Zeer in het algemeen gesproken heeft het moederlijke de neiging om te lang te blijven beschermen, waardoor de ontplooiing van de eigen persoonlijkheid belemmerd wordt, - en het vaderlijke om te blijven heersen, wat hetzelfde gevaar inhoudt. Men moet weekhartigheid en overdreven gevoeligheid overwinnen en men moet zich aan heerserswil en autoriteit weten te onttrekken om geheel volwassen te kunnen worden.
Nu wenden we ons weer tot de drie zojuist besproken religietypen. Hoe overwint men de ouderbinding op de drie verschillende wegen die naar het religieuze einddoel voeren? Om met het eerste type te beginnen, het metafysisch-projecterende type, hiervan kunnen we vaststellen dat de mens op deze weg de ouderbinding niet overwint. Hoe volwassen en verstandig de gelovige christen zich ook in het dagelijkse leven aan ons voordoet, hij komt niet los van de heerserswil en autoriteit van zijn God. Door de ideaaltoestand van de gelukkige jeugd vrij letterlijk te weerspiegelen in een toekomstverwachting die eerst na de dood werkelijkheid wordt, heeft hij zichzelf de weg versperd tot een volledige ontplooiing van zijn persoonlijkheid. Want hij blijft eeuwig de mindere van zijn god, hij blijft onvolmaakt, beperkt, schuldig, zondig. Vestdijk formuleert het zo: door de metafysische projectie is er voor de christelijk-gelovige een eind gekomen aan zijn religieuze ontplooiing. Hij kan niet verder en hij wil ook niet verder, - hij voelt zich veilig aan de hand van God de vader.
De sociale mens gooit de ouderbinding te snel van zich af. Iedereen moet opgaan in de gemeenschap vindt hij, het gezin wordt er aan ondergeschikt gemaakt, en de waarde van de wederzijdse beïnvloeding van ouders en kinderen, waarvan vooral de ouders zoveel profijt trekken voor de ontplooiing van hún persoonlijkheid - zij leren door het ouderschap om wijs te zijn, om zichzelf weg te cijferen, om een goed voorbeeld te zijn - wordt verre onderschat. Er ontstaat bij de sociale mens een wel geïnspireerd, maar slecht gerijpt idealisme, waarin (we legden er reeds de vinger op) teleurstelling en rancunes niet uitblijven.
Over de ‘derde weg’ kunnen we kort zijn. Ook bij het mystiek-introspectieve type moet de ouderbinding overwonnen worden. De mens die zich tot dit type aangetrokken voelt vindt in het ouderschap de beste scholing hiervoor, en hij vat zijn taak als ouder zo hoog op dat hij een volmaakte ouder wil zijn, een volmaakt voorbeeld voor zijn kinderen. Eerst wanneer hij zijn taak als ouder volbracht heeft, kan hij alle tijd besteden aan het ‘werken aan zichzelf’. Maar, zoals

we al zeiden, het mystiek-introspectieve type biedt een oplossing voor enkelen, en is (nog) niet toegankelijk voor de massa, al vindt Vestdijk enkele schreden op deze weg naar zelfinzicht van het grootste belang.
Wanneer het ideaalbeeld van ons religieuze verlangen, of onze religieuze drang, zijn voornaamste inspiratie ontleent aan de prille jeugd, waarin het kind met de ouders in een trouwhartige symbiose samenleeft, dan lijkt dat op het eerste gezicht in een schrille tegenstelling te staan met de stelling dat de ouderbinding overwonnen moet worden door de naar een religieus einddoel strevende mens. Toch is dit slechts een schijnbare tegenstelling. Het gaat hier uitsluitend om de prille jeugd als inspiratiebron, om de kinderlijke totaliteitservaring - we kunnen misschien beter spreken van totaliteitsgewaar-wording, omdat ervaring een zekere mate van bewustheid aanduidt -, het specifiek kinderlijke vermogen om zich één te voelen met al het omringende. Dit vermogen is bij de volwassen mens verloren gegaan. De volwassene heeft geleerd zijn zaken af te wegen, hij heeft zich ontwikkeld, hij weet zijn waarden te bepalen: dit niet en dat wel, deze mensen niet en die wel, deze maatschappelijke en politieke of wetenschappelijke of technische of ethische ontwikkelingen niet en die wel, - en al waarderend zoekt hij zijn weg naar het geluk, waarbij het van zijn aard en aanleg afhangt of hij bij dit alles zijn religieuze drang sterk aan het woord laat of nauwelijks, met andere woorden: of hij het aardse geluk nastreeft of het duurzaam geestelijke, het religieuze geluk. Het kind heeft alles lief, de volwassene maar zeer weinig (in onze cultuur véél te weinig, zoals we straks zullen zien), en daarom en daarom alleen wijst het kind ons de weg naar het ideaalbeeld van het religieuze geluk, dat bij ons gestalte kreeg in de figuren van God en Christus, waarvan de eerste het onkenbare deel is van de idee van het volmaakte en de tweede het kenbare deel, dat ons een praktische weg aangaf naar het religieuze einddoel met zijn advies: Heb uw naasten lief. Bij ons, zeiden wij, en daarna hebben we de hele westerse wereld op het oog, die aan alle zijden christelijk
doordrenkt is.

Macht en liefde
We willen ons in het nu volgende gedeelte met Vestdijk bezinnen op het religieuze leven in onze westerse samenleving, en wat dat voor gevolgen heeft gehad voor ons denken en doen van alle dag. Wat voor samenleving ontstond er, welke beschavingsnormen leerden we hanteren in de kleine tweeduizend jaar dat het christendom ons tot leidend beginsel was?
Uitgaande van de metafysische projectie, die het ideaalbeeld van het duurzame geestelijke geluk gestalte gaf in een almachtige, zelfstandige grootheid, een projectie die de godheid tot ‘alles’ maakte en de mens tot ‘niets’, kunnen we de vinger leggen op een fatale gespletenheid in het menselijk reageren op zijn religieuze ideaal. Want Christus, die als mens onder ons verscheen om de mensen nader tot God te brengen, werd door de machthebbers der kerken van zijn menselijkheid beroofd en naast God geplaatst, waardoor de afstand tussen God en mens even groot bleef. Door deze gespletenheid, deze innerlijke desintegratie, kon het christendom uitgroeien tot een weergaloos machtsinstituut, waarvan de machthebbers der kerken een dankbaar en uiterst geslepen gebruik hebben gemaakt. Voor we dieper ingaan op deze fatale gespletenheid in het christelijke denken, dat in onze hele cultuur heeft postgevat, gaan we met Vestdijk na hoe het mogelijk was dat het religieuze ideaal, verpersoonlijkt in de figuren van God en Christus, die voor ons de liefde vertegenwoordigen in haar schoonste vorm, kon uitgroeien tot de verfoeilijke macht van het christelijke instituut. Eenvoudiger gezegd, hoe de liefde kon worden omgebogen tot macht.
We wenden ons hiertoe tot een van de belangwekkendste essays van Vestdijk: Het principe van het kwaad. Hij maakt ons in dit geschrift duidelijk hoe ongemerkt en gemakkelijk de mens tot het kwade kan komen. Hij gaat ook hier uit van de naar geluk strevende mens, maar hij vat dit streven hier samen onder de noemer zelfzucht. Ook bij de zelfzucht staat de liefde centraal. De liefde ligt namelijk ten grondslag aan de beide allesbeheersende polen van ons driftleven: de erotische drift en de machtsdrift. Bij de erotische drift stroomt onze liefde uit naar de ander die lijdt, en met wie wij ons identificeren. We willen de ander liefhebben, troosten, helpen, opheffen, omdat het ons gelukkig maakt. Het geluk van de ander is het onze, zijn tranen waren de onze, op grond van identificatie, wat we nu eenmaal altijd in meerdere of mindere mate doen. Vestdijk noemt deze vorm van zelfzucht positieve identificatie. Het is een zelfzucht die ons siert, een veredelde vorm van zelfzucht, waar niemand zich voor hoeft te schamen.
Bij de machtsdrift richt de liefde zich in de eerste plaats op het eigen Ik. In plaats van uit te stromen naar de ander, blijft zij gebonden aan het eigen Ik, en omdat wij aan onze eigen liefde zeiden genoeg hebben, zuigen we die van anderen aan, tot meerdere glorie van ons eigen Ik. Het leed van de ander maakt ons gelukkig. Niet omdát de ander lijdt zijn wij gelukkig, maar omdat zijn leed aan ons voorbijging. Vestdijk noemt dit negatieve identificatie met de medemens. De negatieve identificatie is gewone zelfzucht. Het klinkt een beetje ongeloofwaardig dat we gelukkig zouden zijn bij het zien van andermans leed, maar de negatieve identificatie is een normale vorm van identificatie, bij ons allemaal aanwezig. Ter verduidelijking moge het volgende gezegde dienen: ‘Ik weende omdat ik geen schoenen had, tot ik iemand ontmoette die geen voeten had’. De negatieve identificatie hoeft op zichzelf geen enkel bezwaar te zijn; wanneer wij bij het zien van andermans leed ons gelukkig voelen met het eigen welbevinden, dan kan dat een extra prikkel zijn om de ander te gaan helpen. identificatie om in de positieve, tot heil van de ander en van onszelf. Maar veel vaker ontaardt de negatieve identificatie, de liefde voor het eigen Ik dus, in machtsdrift. Want ons eigen Ik, ons veeleisende eigen Ik is een bodemloos vat. Het heeft zelden genoeg aan de versterking van zijn gevoel van welbevinden dat hem door de minderbedeelde wordt geschonken. Onze eigenliefde wil meer, zij wil de ander aantasten in zijn levenskracht, opdat het eigen Ik er zich mee kan verrijken. Ook dit klinkt ongeloofwaardig, maar er ligt een ijzeren natuurwet aan ten grondslag: leven is alleen mogelijk ten koste van ander leven. Wij kunnen alleen in leven blijven als wij de levenssappen aan andere creaturen onttrekken, dier of plant. Maar wanneer wij de ander meer levenskracht ontnemen dan nodig is voor het in stand houden van het eigen leven, dan wordt de eigenliefde schadelijk, dan groeit zij uit tot machtsdrift.
Van de zelfzucht gaat Vestdijk dus uit bij de erotische drift en bij de machtsdrift, en in beide gevallen is de liefde de besturende factor. Alleen de richting is verschallend: bij de erotische drift van het Ik áf, en bij de machtsdrift naar het Ik toe.
Dit stukje ‘verstehende’ psychologie, door Vestdijk beter begrepen dan door wie ook maar vóór hem, willen we staven met enkele voorbeelden die in onze samenleving voor het grijpen liggen. De kapitalist voelt zich tevreden wanneer hij zijn bezit ziet toenemen, en hij wordt ziek van ellende wanneer hij zijn welvaart ziet verminderen, ook al heeft hij meer dan het honderdvoudige om plezierig te kunnen leven. Dat zijn arbeiders het zoveel minder hebben dan hij deert hem niet; het komt eenvoudig niet in hem op om zich positief met hen te identificeren, om zich in hun toestand te verplaatsen, en al helemaal niet in de toestand van de werkelijk ellendigen aan de andere kant van de aarde. Hij identificeert zich negatief met de anderen, - zijn liefde is eigenliefde en staat geheel in dienst van de machtsdrift.
Wij geven hier in het westen milliarden aan bewapening uit; een duidelijker staaltje van uit de hand gelopen machtsdrift is moeilijk te vinden.
De kerkelijke hoogwaardigheidsbekleders hebben tweeduizend jaar lang de liefde gepredikt, de positieve identificatie, het ‘Heb uw naasten lief’, en zij hebben zich ondertussen schaamteloos verrijkt ten koste van de goedgelovigen. Een uiterst geslepen vorm van negatieve identificatie in dienst van de machtsdrift.
Wij allen hier in het rijke westen maken ons schuldig aan negatieve identificatie in dienst van de machtsdrift. Dat doen wij niet omdat we zo ‘slecht’ zijn, maar omdat we niet beter weten. We vinden het de gewoonste zaak van de wereld om eerst aan onszelf te denken, en veel later misschien ook eens aan de ander. Dat hebben we zo geleerd, daar zijn we in opgevoed. Men kan hier tegenwerpen dat we juist wél geleerd hebben om onze naasten wel te doen, maar de niet te ontkennen waarheid is dat we het niét doen, sterker, dat we in een systeem zitten dat het ons belet. Want áls we zouden gaan leven in een ton, met slechts het hoognodige, dan werden we voor gek versleten. Zeker, we zijn brave burgers, we schenken van tijd tot tijd wat aan de armen. Zeker, de dominees en priesters beklimmen de preekstoelen en manen ons om onze naasten lief te hebben. Maar nog nooit hebben we op een preekstoel een figuur zien staan in vodden gekleed, getuigende dat hij hier stond en niet anders kón, omdat hij alles aan de armen had gegeven. Neen, het is met onze werkelijke naastenliefde maar minnetjes gesteld.

De christelijke god moet verv angen worden door een niet-metafysisch religieus ideaalbeeld
Voor dit gebrek aan naastenliefde stelt Vestdijk zeer nadrukkelijk het christendom verantwoordelijk. Het gedesintegreerde denken creëerde een god die alle macht heeft en daartegenover een machteloze, zondige mens. Deze machtige god eist alle liefde op, en gebiedt de naaste lief te hebben. Wanneer deze god in zijn oorspronkelijke staat was blijven voortbestaan - hij kreeg immers het aanzien door de hoogste vorm van liefde: de religieuze drang - dan zou de liefde alzijdig kunnen opbloeien, maar deze god werd door het christendom - door de machthebbers der kerken dus - omgebogen tot macht, waardoor de liefde voor de naasten, de positieve identificatie met de medemens, werd belemmerd. Uit het bovenstaande hebben we begrepen hoe sluipend en ongemerkt dat in zijn werk kan gaan, vooral als de term liefde gehandhaafd blijft voor iets dat al lang geen liefde meer is.
De desintegratie van het christendom bleef helaas niet beperkt tot de verhouding van de mens en zijn god, zij greep om zich heen en bracht gespletenheid teweeg bij letterlijk álles waar het zich mee inliet, en dat was heel veel. Specialisaties en een eindeloos aantal disciplines in vrijwel elke tak van wetenschap, een groot aantal splitsingen in het onderwijs, in de kunsten, scheuringen in het christendom zelf, waarvan de kleinste brokjes: de sekten, in deze tijd een machteloos kopje opsteken. Het is waarlijk indrukwekkend om te lezen wat Vestdijk hierover schreef. Hij vergat niet de integrerende tegenstromingen te noemen, die vooral aan het religieuze denken (dat immers naar een grotere totaliteit, naar integratie streeft) ontsproten: de oecumenische bestrevingen, de sociale tendenzen die de kerken binnenslopen, het aanpassen aan wereldse invloeden, zoals het moderniseren van riten, enz.
Wanneer we ruim dertig jaar na het verschijnen van De toekomst der religie gaan zien wat er aan integrerende tendenzen verwezenlijkt is, dan valt ons oog bijvoorbeeld op de oprichting van het C.D.A., een vorm van oecumene, waarbij we echter onmiddellijk de kanttekening moeten plaatsen dat dit geschiedde minder uit een verlángen naar samengaan dan uit barre politieke noodzaak. Het is echter vooral het Interkerkelijk Vredesberaad dat heden ten dage een krachtige integrerende stem laat horen met zijn hartstochtelijk pleidooi voor ontwapening. Maar toch, maar toch, hoe goed, hoe meeslepend, hoe hartverwarmend ook, het leidt niet tot een andere mentaliteit wanneer men de almacht van de christelijke god ongemoeid laat.
De mens moet zich langzamerhand losmaken van zijn veeleisende god. Hij moet zélf in de voorste gelederen treden, hij moet zélf zijn inzichten verbeteren, zijn wijsheid vergroten, en vooral: zijn liefde bevrijden uit de ban van het christelijke denken, waarvan we zo langzamerhand wel kunnen vaststellen dat dit met het zuivere religieuze denken al lang niets meer te maken heeft. We herhalen het nog eenmaal: de liefde waaruit de christelijke god geboren werd ontaardde in macht, en we hebben met Vestdijk begrepen hoe ongemerkt dit in zijn werk kon gaan. Men is de term liefde blijven gebruiken voor een god die uitsluitend macht is geworden.
De argeloze gelovige buigt het hoofd voor de ‘ondoorgrondelijke raadsbesluiten’ van zijn god, want hij snapt er zelf allang niets meer van. Het is ook niet te begrijpen als men niet doortast tot de bodem om de eigen psychische drijfveren op te graven. Het wordt tijd dat we de metafysische christelijke god, die zoveel gespletenheid en machtsdenken op zijn geweten heeft, met liefdevolle hand gaan opbergen. Hij heeft zijn taak meer dan volbracht, hij is schadelijk geworden voor het gewone, gezonde denken. Hij moet vervangen worden door een nietmetafysisch ideaalbeeld, met andere woorden: het christelijke geloof moet vervangen worden door een geloof in religieuze waarden die niet metafysisch zijn.

Drie mogelijkheden voor de toekomst der religie
Aangaande de toekomst der religie zag Vestdijk in grote trekken drie mogelijkheden voor zich, die we hier zo beknopt

mogelijk de revue zullen laten passeren.
Als eerste geeft hij het christendom nog een kans om zich te handhaven. Het zal dan echter een fusie moeten aangaan met de sociale religie, en het zal dan veel van zijn macht moeten prijsgeven. Het socialisme op zijn beurt zal het geloof in een metafysische godheid moeten tolereren. Het is een mogelijkheid voor het christendom denkt Vestdijk, al vindt hij het een mogelijkheid voor de korte baan. Want het christendom zal verdwijnen, omdat de metafysische projectie zal verdwijnen.
De tweede mogelijkheid is een vervanging van de metafysisch-projecterende religie door de sociale religie. Deze mogelijkheid acht Vestdijk het meest reëel. Ook al zien we in het socialisme op basis van gelijkheid - dat wil zeggen gelijke rechten voor alle mensen -, in het communisme dus, een samenlevingsvorm waarin de macht óók heeft toegeslagen, dan zegt dat nog niets over een betere vorm ervan die zou kunnen ontstaan. Tenslotte heeft het christendom tweeduizend jaar lang de kans gehad om zich in zijn schoonste vorm aan ons te openbaren, terwijl het communisme daar nog maar zestig jaar voor beschikbaar had.
Een andere vorm van socialisme die wij hebben leren kennen: het nationaal-socialisme, dat op basis van óngelijkheid - biologische ongelijkheid van de individuen - zijn principes grondvestte, is ontaard in een machtsinstituut waar waanzinnigen het voor het zeggen kregen, en dat vernietigde dan ook zichzelf in korte tijd. Maar dat wil niet zeggen dat er op basis van de ongelijkheidsideologie geen betere samenlevingsvorm mogelijk zou zijn. Er is trouwens niet zo'n groot verschil tussen de ideologieën op basis van gelijkheid en ongelijkheid, heeft Vestdijk in De toekomst der religie uitgelegd, in uiterst zorgvuldig gekozen bewoordingen (hij schreef het in 1943). Zij gaan dialectisch in elkaar over: er is geen gelijkheid zonder óngelijkheid (er zijn leiders die de socialistische gedachte begrepen hebben en deze moeten uitleggen aan mensen die nog niet zo ver zijn), en er is geen óngelijkheid zonder gelijkheid (bij de geboorte is de biologische ongelijkheid nog niet vast te stellen, er moeten dus minstens gelijke kansen zijn voor alle individuen). Wanneer we nog even teruggrijpen naar de eerste mogelijkheid: het christendom kan zich handhaven wanneer het een fusie aangaat met het socialisme, dan leent het socialisme op basis van ongelijkheid zich daar beter voor, vindt Vestdijk, omdat het christendom zelf een hiërarchische ordening kent op basis van ongelijkheid: God, engelen, heiligen, pausen, priesters en dominees, gelovigen, heidenen.
Een derde mogelijkheid voor de toekomst der religie ziet Vestdijk in een samengaan van het socialisme met mystiek-introspectieve elementen. Deze mogelijkheid acht hij het meest wenselijk, aangezien het socialisme te weinig rekening houdt met het individu. Wanneer door een samengaan met mystiek-introspectieve elementen het individu betere ontplooiingskansen krijgt, dan ligt in deze laatste mogelijkheid de beste kans voor de mensheid, vindt Vestdijk.

Nog drie obstakels voor de religieuze ontplooiing
We willen nog enkele gedachten van Vestdijk aangaande de schadelijke invloed van het christendom op de karaktervorming de revue laten passeren. Door het gedesintegreerde christelijke denken is er op drie essentiële punten kortsluiting ontstaan tussen de mens en zijn medemens. Die drie punten zijn: de dood, de sexualiteit en het ressentiment. Naast de ouderbinding die wij reeds bespraken, vormen deze drie punten moeilijke obstakels op onze weg naar het religieuze einddoel. Het gaat hierbij vooral om onze verhouding tot de medemens. Men moet de medemens liefde, achting en medeleven schenken, men moet bereid zijn zich moeite voor de ander te getroosten, men moet zich, kortom, positief met hem identificeren. Waar de ouders een belemmerende factor kunnen zijn bij de persoonlijkheidsontplooiing omdat zij ons het zelfstandig denken en handelen beletten, met andere woorden omdat zij vinden dat wij te veel doen, daar kunnen de medemensen een belemmerende factor zijn omdat wij ons niet genoeg om hen bekommeren, met andere woorden omdat wij te weinig doen. We zullen de genoemde punten eerst in hun algemeenheid beschouwen en ze daarna bezien door de ogen van de gelovige christen.
De dood maakt een eind aan ons leven, en verspert op het eerste gezicht definitief de weg naar een grotere totaliteit. Maar wanneer we ons bezinnen op de dood, dan blijken daar toch hoedanigheden aan te kleven die een vraagteken kunnen plaatsen achter de definitieve versperring. Wanneer we afscheid moeten nemen van iemand die ons zeer dierbaar was, dan gebeurt er iets met ons. Met onze tranen stroomt de liefde naar buiten, de mooiste herinneringen doemen op, de afscheidswoorden zijn vol van liefde voor de beminde dode, waarbij zielsverheffende muziek dit alles onderstreept. De dode bracht het offer van zijn leven, zo kunnen we het zien, om de liefde bij de achterblijvenden te wekken, hoe kortstondig ook. Gevoelens van wrok en ongenoegen verdwijnen naar de achtergrond en liefde komt er voor in de plaats. Door de liefde worden wij opgeladen met nieuwe levenskracht, worden wij ‘wedergeboren’. De dood bewerkstelligt een wedergeboorte bij de levenden. En dit geldt ook voor de eigen dood, het eigen offer. Wanneer we deze diepere zin van de dood begrijpen, dan is het ook mogelijk om ons met de dood te verzoenen, om deze te integreren. Zo gezien verspert de dood geenszins de weg naar een grotere totaliteit, - hij kan ons zelfs verder brengen naar het religieuze einddoel.
Over de sexualiteit als obstakel naar een grotere totaliteit het volgende. Nergens openbaart onze erotische drift zich zo heftig als in de geslachtelijke liefde, en de kans is groot dat men in de geslachtelijke liefde het enige object van de Eros gaat zien. Maar niets is minder waar; de Eros heeft tal van andere objecten die ons op weg helpen naar een grotere totaliteit. Wanneer men beseft dat de sexualiteit maar een deel is van de totale liefde, dan kan men gerust volop van de sexualiteit genieten. Maar wanneer men met de erotische drift niet verder komt dan de sexualiteit, dan is deze inderdaad een belemmering voor de religieuze ontplooiing.
Wat het ressentiment betreft, het wrokkige, het misnoegdzijn, daarover kunnen we kort zijn. Het ressentiment moeten we uitbannen; het is zonder meer een belemmering voor de religieuze ontplooiing. Het ressentiment, dat in negenennegentig van de honderd gevallen op de medemens betrekking heeft - de partner, of een ouder, of een kind, of een vriend -, zou nooit post mogen vatten in onze geest, maar wie kan met de hand op het hart verklaren dat dat bij hem nooit het geval is? Het ressentiment is maar al te vaak een obstakel in onze intermenselijk verhoudingen, en als zodanig ook een obstakel op de weg naar een grotere totaliteit.
Hoe staat de gelovige christen tegenover deze drie beperkende factoren die de mens op zijn weg naar het religieuze einddoel ontmoet? Aangaande de dood kunnen we vaststellen dat deze de gelovige niet opheft. Voor de gelovige wordt de dode ‘verlost’ en ‘wedergeboren’, - hijzelf niet, hij voelt zich geslagen en soms zelfs gestraft door God, die hem het liefste wat hij bezat ontnam. Hij gaat naar huis, gebukt onder zijn verdriet, een schuldige, een zondaar.
Met de sexualiteit is het érg treurig gesteld in het leven van de gelovige. De sexualiteit is door het christendom verdrongen en ‘zondig’ verklaard, het vleselijke werd verdoemd, - een van de noodlottigste staaltjes van gedesintegreerd denken dat door het christendom is ontworpen. Het arme lichaam met al zijn natuurlijke functies werd door het christendom uitgeleverd aan de ‘duivel’, en we kunnen nog lang niet de rekening opmaken van de heilloze gevolgen die dit heeft gehad, in de eerste plaats voor de misleide gelovigen zelf, en in de tweede plaats voor onze hele cultuur. tend door mannen geleid; de sexualiteit werd in tweeën gesplitst: buiten het huwelijk was zij des duivels en binnen het huwelijk omwille van de voortplanting zelf geheiligd. Deze onbarmhartige splitsing deelde ook de mens in tweeën, en het duivelse viel de vrouw ten deel. De slang, de duivelin, de heks, de heksenprocessen, het ligt allemaal in de lijn van deze ontwikkeling, zegt Vestdijk. En hij gaat verder: de vrouwen zouden ongetwijfeld hier hun stem moeten verheffen, maar een protest is nog niet gehoord van deze zijde. Hij schreef dit in 1943. De sexualiteit is inmiddels begonnen zich los te maken uit de ‘verdoeming van het vleselijke’, de verschillende vrouwenbewegingen laten inmiddels krachtig hun stemmen horen, maar nog niemand heeft de vinger uitgestoken naar de ware schuldige van de scheefgetrokken verhoudingen: het desintegrerende christendom. Het zal nog wel enige tijd duren voordat de verhoudingen in een beter evenwicht zijn. Wat tweeduizend jaar is scheefgetrokken, zegt Vestdijk, kan niet in één handomdraai worden rechtgezet.
Het ressentiment is voor de gelovige een extra moeilijk obstakel door het besef van de erfzonde waaronder hij gebukt gaat. Alleen al door het feit van zijn bestaan is de gelovige zondig, schuldig. Hij draagt een nooit te delgen schuld tegenover God met zich mee, en door het hopeloze hiervan stompt het gevoel voor zijn ‘werkelijke’ schuld af. Want, zegt Vestdijk, de mens is schuldig, hij is zijn medemensen iets schuldig, namelijk steun, liefde, achting, medeleven. Dit is zijn ‘werkelijke’ schuld, voor de mens van goede wil dagelijks af te betalen. De gelovige kan niet anders dan plichtmatig een beetje werkelijke schuld afbetalen aan zijn medemensen; hij schiet er toch niets mee op, want zijn schuld tegenover God blijft eeuwig bestaan.
Door de metafysische projectie, die de mens zeer nadrukkelijk in zijn isolatie van beperkt en zondig individu houdt, is het voor de gelovige onmogelijk om zichzelf te verheffen tot een hoger plan, anders gezegd, om dichter bij het religieuze ideaal te komen. En als we ons realiseren dat onze hele cultuur christelijk doordrenkt is, dan spreekt het vanzelf dat ook de nietgelovigen de schadelijke invloed hiervan hebben ondergaan. Ook de niet-gelovigen draaien mee in de christelijke molen van gedragsethiek, het is ook voor de niet-gelovigen moeilijk om een religieus bevredigende houding te vinden tegenover de drie beperkende factoren die wij zo juist besproken hebben.
Vestdijks milde toon die uit De toekomst der religie spreekt, is hier niet tot zijn recht gekomen. Dat is jammer, maar in het kader van dit artikel moesten we de zaken omwille van de duidelijkheid nogal zwart-wit stellen. Toch voelen we het als een leemte wanneer wij de waarderende beschouwingen van Vestdijk ten aanzien van het christendom hier ongeschreven laten. Het christendom heeft ongetwijfeld beschavend gewerkt, zegt hij. Als het er niet geweest was zouden we misschien nog in beestenvellen rondlopen en onze vrouwen verdobbelen. Bovendien hebben we veel kunstschatten, vooral op het gebied van de schilderkunst en de muziek aan het christendom te danken. Het heeft velen geïhspireerd om hun leven in dienst van de lijdende mensheid te stellen. Als metafysische religie heeft het een vrijwel volmaakte vorm bereikt, en het kan de vergelijking met andere metafysische religies (Shivanisme, Mohammedanisme) glansrijk doorstaan.

Vestdijks wenken
In het laatste hoofdstuk van De toekomst der religie geeft Vestdijk enkele persoonlijke desiderata prijs aangaande de toekomst van ons religieuze beleven. Hij geeft een uiterst praktische, en zelfs vrij simpele weg aan om dichter bij het religieuze einddoel te komen. Die weg komt zeer in het kort hierop neer dat wij onze kinderen anders moeten opvoeden. Hiertoe moeten de opvoeders - onderwijzers, leraren, leiders, - beter geschoold worden. Om te beginnen moet het beroep van opvoeder uit de sfeer van de huidige geringschatting ten aanzien van dit beroep worden gehaald. Wie tot dit ambt geroepen wordt moet zich onderscheiden op het stuk van karakteradel, wijsheid, inzicht, een onderscheiding die zich vooral na de scholing duidelijk openbaart. De psychoanalyse moet bij de scholing betrokken worden; wie inzicht heeft in de eigen psychische drijfveren zal ook in staat zijn de ander te begrijpen en te leiden. Vestdijk zag een bepaalde vorm van zulk een scholing voor zich, die hij parapaedagogie noemde. Maar hij reserveerde wel vijf eeuwen (of langer) voor de verwezenlijking van zulk een parapaedagogie.
Bij alle kritiek die De toekomst der religie ontving, voegde zich vooral spot om dit laatste hoofdstuk. Deze spot toont wellicht meer dan dit hele betoog aan hoe treurig het met onze intermenselijke verhoudingen gesteld is, hoe arm aan liefde en begrip ons denken is geworden. Want hoe duidelijk heeft Vestdijk het allemaal gezien en aan ons voorgelegd, terwijl hij kon vermoeden dat hij zich blootstelde aan hoon en onbegrip bij het prijsgeven van zijn kostelijk inzicht. Zelfs zijn vriend en broeder in de kunst: A. Roland Holst ontkwam er niet aan hem te bespotten. In Swordplay Wordplay laten we hem aan het woord, en we besluiten met het antwoord van Vestdijk op het spottende kwatrijn. Een antwoord als een zweepslag, volkomen terecht, want het was hem heilige ernst met De toekomst der religie.
