XXXIV. H. Cloete to Swellengrebel - Undated
News from the Cape:
The Arend, under captain Nicolaas Klopper, which left Batavia at Whitsuntide, arrived at the Cape on the 8th of December 1786 and brought 26 chests containing money which were fetched as usual by H.O. Ecksteen to be stored in the Castle. After the mustering of the crew D. Kühl wanted to take the chests on board again, he discovered that one of them, containing 3 000 Spanish piasters, was missing. Soon afterwards a few soldiers were caught in possession of brand-new piasters. They were arrested and two were tortured, but did not admit having stolen the piasters, though the torture was severe and they are still incapable of working with their hands. The Council of Justice decided to ban them for life to Robben Island. If definite evidence is found they will be executed.
