XXX. J.A. van Plettenberg to Swellengrebel,
Leeuwarden, 26.11.1785
Hon. Sir and Friend, As promised I am sending you my report and additional notes about the Cape as there is an opportunity to do so by canal - a boat from Leeuwarden to Utrecht. Do not judge me too harshly. Put yourself in my place. The only burgher to whom I spoke was Jan Meindertsz Cruywagen whom I considered one of the most reasonable and unbiassed persons amongst the Burgher Patriots. He answered my purpose well enough and was not indifferent to matters of rank.
The XVII have not treated me well. If the sum I have to pay as a security is not diminished, I shall have to take them to court. But this step I shall only take if all other methods have failed. I am glad that I am no longer in the Company's employ as their methods go so deep against the grain that, as an honourable man, I almost repent that I even served it.
I am now at the service of the Northern Provinces.
PS. This copy is the only one I have left. It was prepared for the First Advocate of the Company - hence the marginal notes - but he is now in France busy with other matters. I shall appreciate an honest, straightforward answer.
