Intusschen, indien er op elke tienduizend slechts éen de noodige gaven heeft meegekregen, om zelf te dichten, dan dienden toch alle beschaafden, óok in deze ónze gewesten, het letterkundig schoone te leeren kennen, te leeren genieten.
Dit nu doet alleen degene, wiens gevoel er voor werd opgewekt door gepaste, niet alleen theoretische, maar ook en vooral praktische inwijding; - degene, die vatbaar is gemaakt, om poëzie niet alleen gewoon te begrijpen, maar mee te voelen en - ‘te leven.’
Ziet! U dáartoe vatbaar te maken, dát en niets meer wensch ik te doen met dit eenvoudige werkje.
Wát poëzie is, hóe zij geboren wordt, hoe de onderscheiden soorten uit elkaar ontstaan en - ondanks alle mogelijk onderscheid - toch in den grond éen en hetzelfde wezen blijven; hoe machtig de poëzie, alleen en alleen omdát zij poëzie is, inwerkt op geest, gemoed en wil van den mensch; hoe zij hem, zonder eenige bijgedachte van nut of stoffelijk voordeel, én gelukkiger én - dáardoor zelf - beter en edeler maakt; - ziedaar, wat ik gepoogd heb u te leeren in mijn lessen, ziedaar mede, wat ik u nu zou willen leeren met dit boek.
Ik heb mij, zooals gij zien zult, niet beperkt tot - uitsluitend - onze eigen nationale of Nederlandsche letteren, maar u zooveel mogelijk attent gemaakt op al wat de literaturen van de groote oude en uitgestorven - evenzeer als van de voornaamste moderne en levende volkeren, waarvan gij in het middelbaar onderwijs van den eersten graad de talen leert, in elke dichtsoort mooist en degelijkst opleveren. En juist omdat de meesten uwer, benevens hun eigen taal, ook Duitsch, Engelsch en Fransch leeren, heb ik niet geaarzeld meer dan éen tekst in deze talen eenvoudig onvertaald laten.
Eindelijk - overtuigd, dat alleen wat leeft en waar is,
