Een van mijn beste vrienden, een Rus uit Luik Victor Dmitrenko is 1 Augustus als vrijwilliger bij het Belgische leger in dienst gegaan. Sinds dien dag heeft niemand meer iets van hem gehoord en wij zijn allen doodelijk ongerust. Nu zijn er drie mogelijkheden. Hij is gesneuveld, hij is krijgsgevangen of vermist. Hij is te Antwerpen met het leger. Nu is mijn dringend verzoek aan u te beproeven daaromtrent zekerheid te krijgen en mij dan te schrijven. Weet gij iets van Georges Eekhoud? Groet alle vrienden en bekenden van mij. Mogen er spoedig betere tijden komen! Beste groeten van geheel de uwe, Jacob Israël de Haan In 1915 voltooide De Haan een bewerking-in-verzen van Eekhouds roman La Nouvelle Carthage (uit 1893). ‘Ik heb een groot gedicht voltooid’, schreef hij aan Albert Verwey913., ‘een phantasie over een boek van Eekhoud’; zo luidde ook ongeveer de voetnoot bij de titel, toen Een Nieuw Carthago914., zonder vóórpublikaties in een tijdschrift, in 1919 uitkwam915.: ‘De beelden voor dit Lied zijn ontleend aan het verhaal van Georges Eekhoud “La Nouvelle Carthage”’. De laatste kaart van De Haan aan Eekhoud ondertekende hij met ‘Joop de Haan’ alsof Eekhoud anders niet zou weten wie hij was. De kaart laat zien dat Eekhoud niets wist van enig serieus plan om voor langere tijd te emigreren. De Haan heeft altijd weggewild uit Holland: naar Frankrijk, of naar Indië. Het werd tenslotte: Palestina, waar hij zich zou vestigen als correspondent van het Algemeen Handelsblad. Zó vertelde hij het Eekhoud, per briefkaart uit Napels916.. De briefkaart is ongedateerd. |
