In Eekhouds nalatenschap vinden we, behalve de overdrukken uit De Beweging, ook een presentexemplaar van In Russische gevangenissen. Er staat het exlibris van Eekhoud in (met de tekst: ‘withoud / weekhoud / eikhoud / eekhoud’) en in handschrift: ‘Georges Eekhoud van den Schrijver’. Een reaktie van Eekhoud op De Haans Russische activiteiten bezitten we niet meer. Wel schreef Eekhoud nog over De Haans berijmingen van Eekhouds werk. In 1914 verscheen De Haans bundel Libertijnsche Liederen, waarin de twee indrukwekkende Eekhoud-berijmingen ‘Antwerpsche Libertijnen’ en ‘Escal-Vigor’. In De Beweging wijdde Verwey een uitvoerige bespreking aan de bundel en ook aan Eekhouds roman Les Libertins d'Anvers. De Wereldoorlog is uitgebroken en een eerste golf van geweld is Antwerpen gepasseerd: ‘Het is een bitter genoegen in dat boek de verheerlijking van het weelderig en lustig Antwerpen voor en tijdens de Hervorming te lezen, nu, terwijl de stad leeg en verwoest is en hier een puinhoop, elders een kerkhof lijkt’, schrijft Verwey. Hij dingt iets af op Eekhouds historische betrouwbaarheid: ‘Het weefsel van legende en geschiedenis [is] niet altijd gelijk van mazen’, en stapt dan van ‘dit ongelijke, maar in stof rijke en in uitvoering krachtige boek’ over op De Haans lyrische bewerking ervan. Daarbij besteedt Verwey veel aandacht aan De Haans strofenbouw910.. Eekhoud schreef in de Mercure de France: De Haan had enkele episodes, enkele karakters en enkele situaties uit twee van zijn werken in verzen omgezet en het paste de schrijver natuurlijk niet daar de loftrompet over te steken911.. Als bron voor het tweede gedicht in Libertijnsche Liederen, ‘Sophocles en de jonge slaaf’912., geeft De Haan een opstel van Pierre Quillard, ‘Hellenica’, in de Mercure de France van april 1900 op. Over dit gedicht kennen we het oordeel van Georges Eekhoud niet. In de Mercure de France vermeldde hij alleen die poëzie die op zijn, Eekhouds, proza geïnspireerd was. In de collectie-Eekhoud te Antwerpen bevindt zich ook de enige ons bekende brief van De Haan aan Victor Resseler alias Segher Rabauw, van 11 september 1914. Uit die brief blijkt dat het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog het contact met Georges Eekhoud verbroken had. |
