Ik heb Holland verlaten en ga naar Palestina wonen. Ik heb gereisd over Londen en Parijs. In den trein naar Rome heb ik een Italiaanschen luitenant ontmoet, die u misschien in Brussel komt opzoeken. De luitenant was op weg van het geallieerde hoofdkwartier in Brussel naar zijn woonplaats in Calabrië, toen De Haan, op weg naar Palestina, hem in de trein van Parijs naar Rome ontmoette. Ze praatten over literatuur en over de wereldoorlog, die nog vers in het geheugen lag: ‘zeker heeft Italië zijn gewonden en gesneuvelden’. 's Nachts kan De Haan niet slapen. De luitenant ‘leunt tegen mij aan. Maar hij leunt zoo licht. Hij leeft nog. Maar zooveel kleine luitenants, slank en fijn, zijn dood’. Aldus één van De Haans eerste ‘Palestijnse’ feuilletons, in het Algemeen Handelsblad van 15 februari 1919. En in de Kwatrijnen is hij vereeuwigd917.: Nachttrein
Een luitenant, maar niet meer dan een knaap.
Wij reisden samen des nachts in den trein.
Wat lot genoot hij lachend in zijn slaap?
Terwijl ik waakte en kromp van pijn.
Men kan het Italiaanse luitenantje beschouwen als De Haans afscheidscadeau aan Georges Eekhoud. Op vrijdag 4 juli 1924 leest Eekhoud in Het Laatste Nieuws van de dood van De Haan. Op 3 juli was het bericht in die krant verschenen onder de kop: ‘Een tragisch Einde. De Nederlandsche dichter J.I. de Haan in Palestina vermoord’. Maar Eekhouds dagboekaantekening heeft eerder betrekking op de krant van 4 juli, waarin een uitvoerig bericht, onder de kop: ‘De Moord op Israël de Haan. Een wraakneming van de Zionisten’. De Haans naam, aldus het blad, werd wel ‘in verband gebracht met de extremistische anti-Zionistische beweging, ofschoon hij vijf jaar geleden als Zionist naar Palestina was gegaan’. De krant vermeldt niet het Algemeen Handelsblad, wél de Daily Express, waarvan De Haan ‘berichtgever’ was geworden. In Engeland beschouwde men hem als ‘steunpilaar van de Joodsche orthodoxie’. In Palestina werd hij ‘van Zionistische zijde’ bedreigd. ‘De Haan ontving in den laatsten tijd veel dreigbrieven, waaronder een zelfs op goevernementspapier’. ‘Op de binnenplaats van het ziekenhuis aan den weg naar Jaffa werden er drie schoten op hem gelost’. Eekhoud is dus geen moment dupe geweest van de praatjes die over de moord op De Haan verspreid werden: De Haan is vermoord door Zionisten, schrijft hij op 4 juli in zijn dagboek. De Haan was na de oorlog overtuigd Zionist geworden, maar had zich daarna zonder twijfel (en hier ziet men Eekhoud het karakter van De Haan peilen) uit walging van zijn ‘coreligionnaires’ van het Zionisme afgekeerd en zijn vroegere vrienden in Engelse kranten bestreden918.. ‘Pauvre diable! Qu'allait-il faire dans toutes ces galères!’919. Hij had zich nooit zo in de nesten moeten werken! Eekhouds afscheid van De Haan is niet hartelijk. De Haan had, schrijft hij, na de oorlog niets meer van zich laten horen. Zelfs niet gecondoleerd toen Eekhouds vrouw stierf920., die steeds zo goed voor hem was als hij zenuwziek naar Brussel kwam en de Eekhouds hem een paar dagen onder hun hoede namen921.. |
