Ik ben wanhopig. Georges Dmitrenko, mijn lieve jongen uit Moscou, is verbannen naar Jacoetsk, het meest-ruwe deel van Siberië. Zijne familie, die mijn adres had heeft mij geschreven. Hij vroeg het zijne moeder, vóór hij in ballingschap ging. Ik zal alles doen om hem te helpen. Misschien ga ik zelf voor hem naar Londen en naar St. Petersburg. Ik ben ziek van ellende. Dinsdag 24 Décember ga ik naar Antwerpen naar eenen vriend van Minor903.. 's Avonds ga ik naar Brussel. Ik hoop u te zien. Ik heb veel te vertellen. Op de 24ste december, de avond vóór Kerst, arriveert De Haan in de Rue du Progrès. De volgende dag schreef Eekhoud in zijn dagboek: ‘Yoop’ had met de Eekhouds gesoupeerd, hij had aan één stuk door over Russische gevangenen gepraat en zo wel een beetje Eekhouds Kerstviering bedorven904.. Toch liet Eekhoud zijn vriend niet in de steek. Op zondag 5 januari 1913 besprak hij in de Vlaamsche Gazet van Brussel De Haans publikaties van oktober, november en december in De Beweging: ‘De hr. Jakob Israël De Haan, de uitstekende Nederlandsche dichter en prozaschrijver, die tevens een zeer beslagen en met groote menschenliefde bezielde doktor in rechtskunde is905., ging verleden jaar drie weken op reis in Rusland’ en dan bespreekt Eekhoud De Haans ‘merkwaardig verslag’, dat uitmunt ‘zoo in letterkundige waarde als in opzicht van hooge menschlievendheid’ en dat enerzijds ‘de oprechtheid en de rechtzinnigheid der Russische overheden’ vermeldt, die De Haan toestonden ‘gedurende geruimen tijd met politieke gevangenen alleen te zijn’ (wat in andere landen niet mag), en anderzijds de Russische regering als ‘de ergste der autokratische en reaktionnaire regeeringen’ aan de kaak stelt. Met name noemt Eekhoud het somber lot van Josef Minor en het besluit om Georges Dmitrenko (en hij citeert uit de brief van De Haan) naar ‘het barste gewest’ van Siberië te verbannen. De Haans verhaal herinnert Eekhoud aan de Hel van Dante, maar deze ‘Russische tafereelen’, zegt hij, zijn helaas geen fictie. Zijn tweede reis naar Rusland maakte De Haan niet in gezelschap van zijn echtgenoot, zoals de eerste. Kaart aan Eekhoud uit Parijs, 11 februari 1913 (getuige het poststempel).
