Ik had het eerst aan u willen zenden voor Elseviers, maar ik dacht: het is te groot. Als het vacantie is zal ik u een paar gedichten zenden. Ik schrijf geen proza meer. Ik kan het niet meer. U zult zeggen: je hebt 't nooit gekund. Misschien hebt u gelijk. Wie zal het rechten? Met achting en waardeering uw dw. Jacob Israël de Haan In 1912 doet De Haan toch weer een beroep op Robbers, in diens kwaliteit van vice-voorzitter van de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen. Het gaat om het slepende konflikt met Kloos om de publikatie van fragmenten uit Pijpelijntjes deel II in De Nieuwe Gids. Na de publikatie van het eerste fragment onder de titel ‘De schoonouders’ en onder het hoofd ‘PIJPELIJNTJES’ in De Nieuwe Gids in november 1910, was daar heftig protest tegen aangetekend en wel van onverwachte zijde: Aletrino, sinds 1909 opgehouden met zijn artsenpraktijk, gepensioneerd en in Zwitserland woonachtig, was bij de fusie van De XXe Eeuw en De Nieuwe Gids tot de redaktie toegetreden en wilde nu in zijn eigen tijdschrift van geen Pijpelijntje horen. Het Pijpelijntjes-fragment was hem pas onder ogen gekomen, toen de novemberaflevering hem bereikte. Aan Robbers legde hij in een brief van 4 en 5 januari 1911 de gang van zaken uit en zijn wedervaren met De Haan: ‘Twee jaar geleden, zooals je weet, ben ik in de redactie van de N.G. gekomen. Kloos had alle stukken en andere dingen van de 20ste Eeuw overgenomen. Ik kreeg elke maand geregeld van den uitgever de proeven van wat er in de aflevering zou komen, zoodat ik altijd op de hoogte was, van wat er zou verschijnen. De laatste maanden zond de uitgever me die proeven niet meer en ik heb er niet over gesproken, omdat ik meende, dat Kloos ze mij zond en ik die niet lastig wilde zijn. Tot dat ik op eens in de Nov. afl. geplaatst zie een stuk van een boek van de Haan getiteld “Pijpelijntjes”. [...] Toen ik dat in de N.G. zag was het me te kras. In het tijdschrift, waarvan ik mederedacteur was, een stuk opnemen van een boek, waarvan ik zooveel last en ellende had gehad en waarvoor ik de hulp heb moeten inroepen van verschillende menschen, van de politie, die me prachtig heeft geholpen, van v. Hall, die toen Wethouder was en anderen, dat kon ik niet laten doorgaan. Was het onder een anderen titel geweest, ik zou er niet aan hebben gedacht er iets van te zeggen. Laat die jongen zijn stukken in de N.G. geplaatst krijgen, mijn een biet. Maar juist de onbehoorlijkheid, dat het onder denzelfde titel was’. Aan Kloos liet Aletrino op 5 november 1910 weten dat hij zich het liefst uit de redaktie van De Nieuwe Gids zou willen terugtrekken, maar niet op staande voet: ‘Ik wil niet, dat men misschien denkt, dat dat stuk tegen mijn wil is opgenomen en dat ik daarom uit de redactie treed’. En hij verzoekt Kloos het publiceren van fragmenten uit Pijpelijntjes te staken. Op 9 november waarschuwt hij Kloos nog eens nadrukkelijk voor De Haan: ‘Wees hoogst voorzichtig met het heer en schrijf hem zoo kort en zakelijk mogelijk, omdat hij zoo'n een patser is, dat hij overal van weet gebruik te maken tot zijn eigen voordeel en tot nadeel van een ander. Ik ken hem door en door en heb nooit zulk een gedepraveerd en onbetrouwbaar individu ontmoet als dien vent’. Kloos stuurde toen op 15 november de andere Pijpelijntjes-fragmenten aan De Haan terug en beriep zich op het veto van Aletrino848.. De Haan vond echter dat hij met Aletrino niets van doen had. Hij maakte Kloos dat duidelijk in een brief van 17 november, door op beproefde De Haan-manier een parallel te trekken: ‘Stel u voor, dat u een contract hadt met eene uitgever en dat die dat contract ging verbreken, omdat hij er naderhand eenen compagnon bij heeft gekregen, die hem de nakoming verbiedt. Wat is dat voor eene opvatting?’ Zou Aletrino dwars blijven liggen, dan zag De Haan voor hem maar één oplossing: ‘Zoo een redacteur kan er uit gaan’. En hij dreigde Kloos met een proces wegens contractbreuk. Kloos antwoordde per kerende post dat De Haan, in plaats van met een proces te dreigen, hem ‘groote dankbaarheid’ had behoren te betonen: de opdracht aan Eulenburg, ‘achter [Kloos'] rug om’, had de N.G. schade toegebracht: ‘een aantal abonnés [bedankten] voor hun abonnement’, en Kloos had dus wel ‘zeer veel consideratie’ betoond, toen hij De Haans ‘schoonouders’ plaatste. De Haan hield op 19 november vast aan zijn standpunt: ‘Er bestaat eene overeen-komst tusschen u en mij over het plaatsen van bepaalde fragmenten van Pijpelijntjes in de N.G. welke overeenkomst eene veranderde voortzetting is van de tusschen den Heer Van Deyssel en mij bestaande. Immers: de 20.ste Eeuw is niet opgehouden maar onder den naam N.G. voortgezet. Bovendien hebt u bij brief van 14 Sept. die overeenkomst uitdrukkelijk bevestigd’. Kloos reageerde niet. Toen schakelde De Haan de advocaat H. Louis Israëls in, juridisch adviseur van de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen en bekend met het werk van tijdschriftredakteur; als redakteur van De Nederlandsche Spectator had hij in 1907 De Haans nerveuze vertelling ‘De bloemen en de brief’ gepubliceerd. Israëls nam contact met Kloos op. Hij hield Kloos aan de gemaakte afspraken en schoof Aletrino's protest terzijde: ‘Dr. Aletrino had zijn bezwaren aan U en zijn andere mede-redacteuren tijdig kenbaar moeten maken vóór dat Uwe redactie het stuk aanvaardde’849.. Het kostte Kloos weinig moeite om (in een brief waarvan een ongedateerd afschrift bewaard gebleven is) de onjuistheid van Israëls' voorstelling van zaken aan te tonen: ‘de bijdrage van uw cliënt [was] volstrekt niet door de tegenwoordige redactie aanvaard, maar door den hr Alb. Thijm voor de XXe Eeuw. U zult mij moeten toestemmen, dat dit een groot verschil maakt, - het verschil nl, dat, waar de N.G. gehouden was, de aangeboden bijdragen van de XXe Eeuw over te nemen, de heer Aletrino niet vooruit had kunnen protesteeren tegen een publicatie der bijdrage van uw cliënt’850.. Kloos vraagt dan aan Israëls met Aletrino contact op te nemen ‘om overtuigd te worden, dat de heer Dr. A inderdaad het zedelijk recht had, verdere plaatsing te verbieden’. In een brief aan mevrouw Kloos, van 4 januari 1911, stemt Aletrino in met een andere oplossing: ‘[ik] vind het 't beste, nu de zaken zóó staan, er niets meer aan te doen en de stukken maar te plaatsen’ en het niet op een proces te laten aankomen: ‘ik heb geen geld genoeg’. En dan vaart hij tegen Israëls uit: ‘ik dacht dat Israëls een fatsoenlijke vent was. Hij valt me enorm tegen. Hij is een chicaneur en zijn Hoogduitsche-Jood-zijn komt er uit, met volle vaart’. Kloos wil zich tot de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen wenden en Aletrino vraagt Robbers (in de brief van 4 en 5 januari 1911) of ‘Kloos de kwestie, die ik je heb verteld, voor het Bestuur en voor de Verg[adering] [kan] brengen en hoe moet dat worden gedaan’. Het is de brief waarin hij De Haan beschrijft als ‘een geweldig gedegenereerd individu, ontbloot van alle moreel gevoel en daarbij bisexueel met overwegend homosexueele neigingen’. Robbers heeft Kloos en Aletrino weinig kans op succes gegeven en Aletrino wil, zoals hij Robbers op 10 januari schrijft, nu alles maar laten lopen en De Haans stukken maar laten passeren, uit de brief begrijpende dat de zaak verloren is, ‘terwijl je Kl[oos] & mij eer wilt helpen dan de H[aan]’. Ook aan Kloos schreef Aletrino, op dezelfde dag, dit: ‘[Robbers] is natuurlijk meer geneigd om jullie en mij gelijk te geven, dan de H[aan]. En toch schrijft hij me, dat hij niet gelooft, dat er iets aan te doen is’. Waarschijnlijk schatte Aletrino de partijdigheid van Robbers juist in. Waarschijnlijk echter vergist hij zich als hij op 17 juli 1912 aan Robbers schrijft: ‘Ik ben er nog zoo zeker niet van, dat Mr. Is[raëls] [De Haan] zou gezegd hebben, dat 't recht aan zijn zij is; 't kan zijn, maar de vent liegt en draait zoo geweldig, dat je nooit weet wat waar is & wat niet’. |
