De Haan aan Robbers, 7 juli 1912Amsterdam, 7.7.'12.Geachte Heer Robbers, sinds jaren heb ik al een conflict met den Heer Willem Kloos over de plaatsing van een stuk in de Nieuwe Gids. Naar de meening van Mr Israëls is het recht aan mijne zijde en kan ik de zaak voor den rechter brengen. Echter: ik zou dat liever niet doen. Ik houd niet van de justitie. Liever zou ik de bemiddeling van het Bestuur van de Vereeniging willen inroepen, waarvan alle redacteuren van de N.G. en ikzelf lid zijn. In het jaarverslag stond, dat het bestuur in een geval bemiddeld had, dat mij toeleek iets dergelijks te zijn851.. Alvorens mij officieel tot het Bestuur te wenden zou ik u gaarne willen spreken. Is het zeer onbescheiden als ik u een onderhoud vraag? Een slepende zaak schriftelijk uiteenzetten duurt zoo lang852.. Ik kan elken avond om 9¼. Maar als u dat te laat is ook wel op eenen anderen tijd, als ik het dan een paar dagen te voren zou mogen weten om eventueele lessen te kunnen verzetten. Na 19 Juli zijn wij de stad uit. Blijkens een aantekening van Robbers op de brief: ‘Woensdag ½10’, is er een afspraak gemaakt. Meer weten we niet. Op 23 oktober 1912 deed Aletrino Kloos een compromis aan de hand: de stukken moesten maar worden geplaatst, ‘onder een anderen titel’. Gelezen had Aletrino de fragmenten weliswaar nog steeds niet (‘ik heb ze ouder gewoonte nog niet onder de oogen gehad’), maar zo kwam Kloos tenminste ‘van alle gezanik’ af, ‘waarvan je mij de schuld wenscht te geven [er was blijkbaar ook wrijving tussen Kloos en Aletrino ontstaan] en komt deze kwestie de wereld uit’. Per 1 januari 1913 verliet Aletrino de redaktie van De Nieuwe Gids. In juni 1913 verschenen ‘Zilveren bruiloft’ en ‘Doode man in huis’ in De Nieuwe Gids, als: ‘Schetsen’, zonder verwijzing naar Pijpelijntjes noch naar de publikatie (van ‘De schoonouders’) in De Nieuwe Gids van 1910. Tot een boekuitgave van het tweede deel van Pijpelijntjes is het na deze allerongelukkigste vóórpublikaties nooit meer gekomen. Het manuscript is verloren gegaan.
Er resten nog twee brieven van De Haan aan Robbers, uit 1918. De Amsterdamse hoogleraar in de Nederlandse taal- en letterkunde, de zeventigjarige Te Winkel, is dan afgetreden en er heerst grote verwarring om zijn opvolging853.. In Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift (1918, waarschijnlijk september) bespreekt Robbers de ‘geheel verjaarde opvattingen’ van Te Winkel, die allerlei ‘naarstig en accuraat’ onderzoek verricht en talloze geschriften gerangschikt, betiteld en beschreven had zonder ooit enige mededeling te doen over ‘de artistieke, d.i. de feitelijk-éénige waarde’ van literatuur, ja, die zijn leven lang aan ‘litterair schoon’ en de ‘vatbaarheid’ daarvoor geheel voorbij scheen te zijn gegaan. Omstreeks 1880 hadden zich, aldus Robbers, veranderingen in het denken over literatuur voltrokken. De ‘schoonheidsontroering’ zou centraal in het onderwijs moeten komen te staan. Letterkunde en taalkunde zouden gescheiden dienen te worden. De Vereeniging van Letterkundigen en ook anderen bepleitten een splitsing van de leerstoel. Dit waren ideeën waarin De Haan zich wel kon vinden. Zijn kandidaat voor een leerstoel Nederlandse letterkunde was Albert Verwey. Hij stelde zelfs een circulaire op om bij de Faculteit, de Curatoren en de Gemeenteraad de aandacht op Verwey te vestigen. De circulaire, ondertekend door o.m. H.P. Berlage, J.C. Bloem, P.N. van Eyck, F.C. Gerretson, Aart van der Leeuw, J.H. Leopold, Jacobus van Looy, Arthur van Schendel en Nico van Suchtelen, was ‘vertrouwelijk’ en verscheen in augustus 1918. Verwey was geen academicus, aldus dit rondschrijven, maar had in 1914 bij het driehonderdjarig bestaan van de Universiteit van Groningen wel een letterkundig eredoctoraat in ontvangst mogen nemen. De Haan nu schijnt te menen dat door dit eredoctoraat de wetenschappelijke verdiensten van Verwey in een heel speciaal licht werden gesteld. Verwey zelf schreef aan een vriend854.: ‘Verzuim niet te noteren dat ik de bul niet als een erkenning van wetenschappelijke maar van dichterlijke verdiensten ontvangen heb, die dan natuurlijk de wetenschappelijke niet uitsluiten’. Maurits Uyldert zag een Dichter op de leerstoel-Letteren wel zitten: ‘Men pleegt ook de leiding van een conservatorium toe te vertrouwen aan een musicus’. Geheel omgekeerd dacht Hein Boeken daarover. Hij wilde, reagerend op De Haans circulaire, Albert Verwey juist in de eerste plaats aanbevelen ‘omdat hij in de laatste 31 jaren geen poëzie heeft voortgebracht’. Verwey werd, aldus Uyldert, door al die pogingen om hem tot hoogleraar te bombarderen ‘in niet geringe mate verontrust’. Eigenlijk had hij andere plannen: ‘hij wist sinds enige jaren, dat Prof. Kalff te Leiden hem als zijn opvolger aanbevelen zou, en Leiden, waar het ambt reeds was gesplitst, trok hem uiteraard meer aan dan Amsterdam’. Maar Jacob Israël de Haan zette zijn campagne voort, en schreef er Robbers over. |
