Ik heb het boek met onverdeeld genot reeds in Elseviers gelezen. Ook ‘Een voor een’. Vooral de subtiele teekening van den stillen scherpen jongen Henk heeft mij diep getroffen. Onjuist is de meening als zoudt Gij niet tot het wekken van eenen diepen indruk in staat zijn. Het gaat mij goed. Ik heb uwe hulp in geen enkel opzicht noodig. Vandaar dat ik u dit schrijven kan. De beide heren lijken in 1910 in regelmatige briefwisseling geraakt. Robbers informeert naar De Haans dissertatie en De Haan informeert naar Robbers' laatste roman. Alleen een zeer argwanend lezer herkent in De Haans lof voor Robbers' geschriften iets van het stapelen van gloeiende kolen. In 1909 publiceerde De Haan klein werk in De Gids, Groot Nederland, De Amsterdammer, Ontwaking en in De Beweging, samen inderdaad nog geen twintig bladzijden841.. Zijn levensonderhoud verdient hij als repetitor. En dan beklimt De Haan in zijn brief een oud stokpaard: zijn werk mag voor de kunstenaar geen broodwinning zijn, een tijdschrift waarvan de redakteur moet leven, verliest zijn betekenis. |
