Zeer waarde Heer Robbers!
Laten wij daar niet over kibbelen of er 50 à 60 jaar geleden tijdschriften bestonden. Ze bestonden wel. Ik heb gekaatst en ik moet dus de bal terugverwachten. Maar ik krijg straatzwijnerij. Trouwens: ik ben niet nijdig op u. Gij vindt mij een knoeier van eene monsterachtige pretensie van wien ge bij ongeluk eens wat proza hebt geplaatst. Maar ik ben nijdig op de kunstenaars, die mij hebben aangemoedigd en geprezen en die nu hard, hard medehelpen om mij aan de ramp te brengen. Basta! Blijft u maar aan uw werk! Snel overwon De Haan het nieuwe dieptepunt dat de Pijpelijntjes-Pathologieën-affaire in zijn leven betekende. In juni/ juli 1909 legde hij het doctoraalexamen in de rechten af. Gedichten van hem werden geaccepteerd door De Gids en door De Beweging. We zien dan een kentering in zijn verhouding tot Herman Robbers.
Heel genereus prijst hij Robbers' ‘grooten gezinsroman’, in het bijzonder de uitbeelding van zoon Henk, bleekblond ventje met lorgnetje, knap op school, gefrustreerd in zijn Delftse studieplannen, in conflict met zijn vader: ‘als u me niet laat studeeren... ik ga weg, voor altijd, ik ga naar Indië of na' Amerika, u ziet me nooit meer terug!’ - en die dan inderdaad naar Amerika gaat en daar als autodidact, als selfmade man, een succes wordt, kortom een figuur waarin De Haan zich herkende. Overigens zijn slechts weinig bladzijden in Robbers' zeer dikke roman aan Henk gewijd. En De Haan laat de romancier ook even voelen dat niet iedereen zo positief tegenover zijn werk staat.
