De Haan aan Robbers, 4 januari 1910Amsterdam. 27.Palestrinastraat. 4.1.'10.Geachte Heer Robbers, ik wil u nog even dankzeggen voor uwen laatsten brief. Omnia fausta842. in het nieuwe jaar. Ik zou het waardeeren, wanneer ook: ‘Een voor een’ in boekvorm verscheen en daardoor gemakkelijker binnen bereik zou komen. U vraagt mij of ik gauw denk te promoveeren. Neen: dat denk ik niet, want ik wil eene dissertatie maken over de ethische en de philosophische grondslagen van het strafrecht en dat is een omvangrijk werk. Bovendien bezit ik niets. Gedurende den tijd, dat ik dus aan het proefschrift werk, moet ik zooveel geld verdienen als boven de eigen inkomsten van mijne vrouw in ons gezin noodig is en bovendien de kosten van de dissertatie besparen en van aankoop van boeken. Ik moet dus vele lessen geven, maar ben verheugd, dat ik die heb en als repetitor gewaardeerd word. Doch het vele lesgeven neemt natuurlijk veel tijd. Waarbij komt, dat ik weinig schrijf, nog minder publiceer, jaarlijks geen twintig bladzijden, en als letterkundige dus niets verdien. Ik ben trouwens verheugd, dat ik het niet op die wijze verdienen behoef. Wenschelijk zou ik het achten, dat ieder kunstenaar eene broodwinning had, buiten zijn kunst. Zoo licht komt men anders tot het publiceeren of liever tot het geforceerd schrijven van mindermatig werk. Of minder. Wat mij overigens het meest handicapt is de slechte staat van mijne gezondheid. Mijne vrouw zorgt voor mij met eene volkomen toewijding. Ware dit niet zoo, dan zou ik reeds lang in groote ongelukken zijn gestort. Sinds eenige maanden word ik door een woesten honger gekweld, waar niets aan te doen is. In dat opzicht ben ik er even armoedig aan toe, als iemand, die geen eten koopen kan. Toch probeer ik zooveel mogelijk moed te houden. Het schrijven van mijn proza en van mijne gedichten geeft mij veel vreugde, alsmede het lezen van de geschriften van een aantal kunstenaars, waartoe u ook behoort. Wanneer maar eenmaal de winter om is, komt er wellicht een beter tijd. Ik schrijf u, gelijk u ziet, meest over mij zelven. Omdat ik in uwen brief belangstelling las. In Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift, oktober 1910, publiceerde Robbers een uitvoerige bespreking van de roman De Verlatene van Carry van Bruggen. Hij plaatst haar in een groep ‘israëlitische belletristen’: Aletrino, Hartog, Heijermans, Van Campen, Querido, Goudsmit en Jacob Israël de Haan (‘mevrouw van Bruggen's broer’!). Hij heeft lof voor haar als romancière, verzuimt niet haar ‘naaischooltjesschetsen’ in Elsevier te vermelden en heeft kritiek: het uiteenvallen van het gezin in De Verlatene wordt niet als algemeen geval, als ‘noodlottige vervreemding van ouders en kinderen’, maar als typisch joods voorgesteld. Daar is Robbers, zelf auteur van een ‘grooten gezinsroman’, het niet mee eens. En in het algemeen heeft Robbers bezwaar tegen romans die het joodse of het Haagse of het Amsterdamse of het medische of een ander specifiek leven zeggen uit te beelden. De reaktie van De Haan op deze bespreking plaatst zijn volgende brief aan Robbers in de herfst van 1910. Het overdrukje dat hij Robbers stuurt, bevat vijf, vooral joodse, gedichten uit De Beweging van november 1910. Robbers was zeer te spreken over deze poëzie. |
