Brieven van en aan Jacob Israël de Haan 1899-1908

Als je Dinsdagavond a.s. een kopje thee bij mij komt drinken, dan vind je me denk ik vrij. Ik zal je dan iets uit mijn roman Pathologieën laten lezen, als je wilt. Breng eens wat van je eigen proza mee, dat lees ik dan gaarne. Beste groeten t.t. d.H.
Op 28 maart 1908 nam De Ware Jacob in ‘Nog een intiem briefje’682. De Haan nog eens terdege op de hak. Het gaat zogenaamd om een briefje van De Haan aan de redactie. Een plaatje parodieert het ‘satanistische’ portret van De Haan dat vóór in Pathologieën staat en dat ook in Den Gulden Winckel bij het voorwoord van Georges Eekhoud was afgedrukt: men ziet het elliptische hoofd van De Haan op twee benen met bijschrift ‘Jacoba de Hen oftewel Jacob de Haan’. In het ‘intiem briefje’ staat: ‘Bijgaand mijn portret. In Den Gulden Winckel ontbrak de omlijsting. Toe, maak eens een aardig versje bij mijn blank, bloot, brillegezicht, maar “neem” me niet te bar’. De hoofdinhoud van het briefje is een klacht: ‘Vin-je het nou niet akelig flauw van het Handelsblad, dat het moedwillig verzuimd heeft mij te inviteeren om “onder-de-streep” m'n letterkundige plannen den volke kond te doen? Nu moet je weten, dat mijn bloedeigen zwager, van Bruggen, in de onder-de-streep-redactie zit. Die goeie Kees weet, dat ik er zoo erg op gesteld was eens onder de streep te kruipen683. en toch wilde hij er mij niet in hebben. Vroeger was hij zoo'n snoes, maar tegenwoordig vind ik hem een naren man. Ik ben toch ook letterkundige’. Bedoeld is de rubriek ‘Onder de streep’ in het Algemeen Handelsblad, februari en maart 1908, waarin een bont gezelschap schrijvende ‘persoonlijkheden’ aan het woord werd gelaten over hun werk en hun toekomstplannen. Wij noemen: Augusta de Wit, Thérèse Hoven, Adriaan van Oordt, Frans Mijnssen, J.N. van Hall, Giza Ritschl, Adama van Scheltema, Lode Baekelmans, Frans Bastiaanse, Ina Boudier-Bakker, Cyriel Buysse, Boutens, Emants, Querido, Van Eeden, Carel Scharten, G.F. Haspels, Gerard van Eckeren, Van Eyck, Henri van Booven, Jeanne Kloos-Reyneke van Stuwe, Van Nouhuys, Simons-Mees, W. Graadt van Roggen; ook: Van Deyssel, die op 21 maart een nieuwe omwerking van Een liefde had aangekondigd. Jacob Israël de Haan was inderdaad niet van de partij. ‘Andere bladen nemen wèl notitie van me’, zo vervolgt het briefje. ‘Heb je in het vorig nummer van Den Gulden Winckel niet gelezen, wat George Eekhoudt over mijn nieuwste werk heeft geschreven? Dat moet je lezen. Dat is nu nog eens een lieve man, die George Eekhoudt, die snapt me. Hij dweept met mij en ik met hem. Zooals ik m'n “Pijpelijntjes” aan “goeie Nol Aletrino” heb opgedragen, zal ik mijn wordende “Bruine Verzen” (“half-zachte gedachten van een mannenvriend”, luidt de ondertitel) m'n “beste George” dediceeren’. Dan komen De Haans toekomstplannen: een vervolg op Pijpelijntjes, een berijming van ‘Traité de l'uranisme’ van Aletrino684. en een Duitse vertaling van zijn ‘Besliste Volzinnen’: ‘Bestimmte Perioden’, afgedrukt ‘op geperforeerde en opgerolde strooken’. Phili von Eulenburg had al een honderd exemplaren besteld. Wij zullen niet alle grappen citeren, waarin de vindingrijkheid van de redactie van De Ware Jacob zich uitput. Voldoende komt tot uiting hoe goed het blad steeds over De Haan geïnformeerd en gedocumenteerd was. Het lijkt zelfs of men ervan wist dat De Haan naar een vertaler van zijn werk zocht685.. In De Ware Jacob van 11 april 1908 werd een gedicht van De Haan afgedrukt; hier volgt de eerste strofe: Ik zocht het Leven en ik vond den Dood,
Den goeden Dood. En ik betrouwde
Hem, hem, alles wat mij behouden
Uit mijn leven overschoot.
Onder het opschrift ‘Een gemoedelijke doode’ wordt meegedeeld dat deze verzen ‘van den meer dood dan levend zijnden De Haan’ in Levensrecht hadden gestaan: ‘Volkomen op hun plaats dus. Een blad, dat het recht op het leven bepleit, is onbetwistbaar de ware plaats om ook eens de genoegens van het dood-zijn met een warm woordje aan te bevelen’. De Haans titel ‘Nerveuze Verzen’ is echter ‘beslist onjuist, want aan dien dooien De Haan, wien het volmaakt onverschillig schijnt te zijn wat hij is, dood of levend, is niet de minste nerveusheid te bespeuren’. Een positiever reactie op zijn werk viel De Haan ten deel in het huiselijke blad Op de hoogte686., waar W. van Ree het in De Nieuwe Gids gepubliceerde fragment van Pathologieën bespreekt. Het ‘merkwaardig proza’ van De Haan wordt ‘bizonder van fijnheid, vreemd-broos, suggestief van stijl’ genoemd en het thema van Pathologieën ‘benauwend’. Van Ree toont zich getroffen door de vanzelfsprekendheid waarmee De Haan zijn ‘held’ René Richell ten tonele voert: ‘Het abnormale van zijn held geeft de auteur als bij dezen normaal, als iets, waarover hij zich geenszins verwondert of behoeft te verwonderen en zoo sterk suggestief is zijn beelding, dat ook de lezer, geïmponeerd, 't verhaalde als iets natuurlijks voelt bij dezen gedegenereerde, al is 't natuurlijke dan ook afschuwelijk’. Hij citeert dan twee boutades van René Richell: ‘Ik ben altijd blij, als er iemand dood gaat, van wien ik veel houd, want dan word ik verlost van mijn voortdurende doodsangst, dat zoo iemand sterven zal’, en: ‘Ik vind iederen moordenaar een sympathiek mensch. Ik zou zelf ook graag eens een moord doen, want dat is een geheel nieuwe gewaarwording voor mij... en het is heel moeilijk een nieuwe gewaarwording te vinden...’. Van Ree vergelijkt De Haan dan met Couperus (en een recente publicatie van Couperus in Groot Nederland687.), hij vindt Couperus ‘brutaler, zonder de intimiteit van uiterste ziekelijke verfijning, en wat inwerking op den lezer betreft, daardoor te gevaarlijker’. Maar beide auteurs vertellen van een ‘absoluut egoïsme, dat állen band tusschen individu en gemeenschap wegdenkt en à tout prix bevrediging zoekt, in woorden of daden, der aandriften, hoe verkeerd deze ook zijn’. Op 12 en op 26 april 1908 verschenen er weer besliste volzinnen in De Amsterdammer; uit de eerste reeks citeren wij: ‘Een slecht boek vindt altijd een goede plaats’688., en uit de tweede reeks de trotse uitval: ‘De Hemel is hoog en de Hel is diep. Maar de aarde is plat en ik houd daar niet van’689.. In de tussentijd reisde De Haan naar Brussel. Op 17 april noteerde Georges Eekhoud in zijn dagboek: ‘De Haan est ici depuis hier à midi’. De vrienden wandelen door de stad en gaan 's avonds, met Eekhouds vrouw, naar de schouwburg690.. Dit staat op bladzij 222 van het dagboek; daarna ontbreken vier bladzijden. Op bladzij 227 brengt Eekhoud de gast uit Amsterdam naar de trein. Hij is gecharmeerd van De Haan, maar diens onophoudelijk gepraat heeft ook wel een beetje op zijn zenuwen gewerkt691.. De Haan had Eekhoud op 22 februari een exemplaar van Pathologieën gestuurd. Vóórin zetten nu de vrienden Joop de Haan en Georges Eekhoud kruiselings hun handtekening en daaronder schreef De Haan als was het een gedicht: ‘Hij, die deze namen scheiden kan,
Hij kan ook onze harten scheiden’.
