Inliggende brief van Willem Kloos, dien ik gaarne van u terugontvang, zal u op de hoogte brengen. Mijn beleefd verzoek is dit: zoudt u de inliggende stukken willen plaatsen? Anders komen ze in een klein Vlaamsch tijdschrift692., wat nogal jammer is. De Groene staat sterker dan de N-Gids staat. Ik geloof niet, dat Gij er kwaad mede kunt. Als u iets terugzendt, wilt u dan deze gele enveloppe gebruiken? Inmiddels met bekende gevoelens (ik houd meer van de onbekende.) uw dienstw. Jacob Israël de Haan
De brief van Kloos zou nog herhaaldelijk de ronde doen, maar hij is teloorgegaan en naar de inhoud ervan kunnen wij slechts raden. Misschien accepteerde Kloos in deze brief bijdragen van De Haan aan De Nieuwe Gids693., maar zeker retourneerde hij een aantal, hoewel het onzeker blijft welke. Kloos' motief moet geweest zijn: iets aanstootgevends in De Haans proza694. en angst voor het verlies van abonnees. In de slotzin van zijn brief aan Wiessing, in het grapje met de bekende en de onbekende gevoelens, herkennen we De Haans neiging tot paradoxen, tot besliste volzinnen. Volgens Wiessings Bewegend portret gingen De Haans inzendingen ‘vergezeld van zo dankbare brieven, dat ik er - ja, dat ik er wel eens draaierig van werd. Ik moest mij altijd weer overwinnen, zo dikwijls ik die zoete missives las’ (p. 21/2). In bovenstaande brief aan Wiessing zien wij niets dankbaars en niets zoets. Wij weten niet welke waarde wij aan Wiessings persoonlijke opmerkingen mogen hechten: ‘het vleierige’ in De Haan leek hem ‘conform zijn ongezond-bleke, kale grote ballon-hoofd met de bebrilde, een heel klein beetje uitpuilende steekogen, en zijn wat vormeloze lichaam, waarmee hij voortliep, of hij - ja, werkelijk, of hij vinnen had’. Op 3 mei 1908 publiceerde De Haan in De Amsterdammer een opstel met de uitdagende titel ‘Schaamtelooze, hooge journalistiek’. Het is het opstel waarover Wiessing op 17 april aan De Koo had geschreven: ‘voor de volgende week, een heel aardig stukje van Jacob Isr. de H. [...] over 't zelfde onderwerp waarop Coenen hamert’. De Haan begint ook met een verwijzing naar ‘de heer Frans Coenen, die in dit Weekblad op zulk eene verfijnde wijze de onzedelijke artikelen in het Handelsblad heeft te grazen gehad’, twee opstellen van 19 en 26 april: het Handelsblad had de toename van het aantal winkeltjes met vieze prentjes schrikbarend genoemd. Coenen had de hand van een ‘stellig jeugdigen verslaggever’ menen te herkennen, maar De Haan zag in die ‘aanval op de winkels-om-de-hoeken waar onzedelijkheid wordt verkocht’ een veel breder opzet. ‘De Londensche berichtgever heeft de onzedelijkheid bestreden, de Parijsche berichtgever heeft de onzedelijkheid bestreden, en nu begint de Berlijnsche berichtgever ook’. Volgens De Haan wordt er ‘een aanval gedaan in naam der zedelijkheid op de kunst’. Wat was er gebeurd? Op 14 april was in het Handelsblad geprotesteerd tegen een opvoering van Lysistrata, van Aristophanes, in Berlijn. ‘Het is’, aldus De Haan, ‘altijd de groote moeilijkheid geweest in het bestrijden der onzedelijke voorwerpen, dat men de fijne kunst wilde vrijlaten en de grove narigheid aan banden wilde leggen. Daarover was men het eens’. Men was dus tégen ‘de onzedelijke uitstallingen’ en vóór Lysistrata. De Haan vervolgt (en men kan aannemen dat hij zichzelf tot die ‘velen’ rekende): ‘zóó zeer hebben velen bezwaar tegen een bazige heerschappij van de zedelijkheid over de kunst, dat zij zich dan maar bij algeheele vrijheid voor alles nederlegden’. Maar de Berlijnse correspondent gaat de andere kant op: ‘welke vrijheid laat die man de kunst dan nog? In een besloten schouwburg te Berlijn speelt men Lysistrata. Wie dus te zedelijk is, om het stuk te gaan zien, die kan thuisblijven’. Lysistrata ‘is toch waarlijk geen onbekend stuk’ en ‘de kunstwaarde van het stuk en van de opvoering wordt door dezen Berlijnschen puritein ook niet ontkend. Dat is juist het erge’. Dan laat hij het Handelsblad aan het woord: ‘de schaamtelooze Hooge Kunst wordt een paar avonden in de week geestdriftig bejubeld door de upper-ten en geestdriftig besproken op tea's en soirées. Waar thans het gebouw van de “Kammerspiele”, zoo smaakvol, streng, klassiek bijna verrijst, stond vroeger een bekend danshuis. Ik geloof, dat het toen zedelijker was’. De Haan: ‘Dit is de wijze, waarop in een groot en liberaal en Hollandsch dagblad geschreven wordt, niet over twijfelachtige flodderschrifturen, maar over kunst, die door den schrijver zelven als kunst erkend wordt’. Daarop laat hij een paar volzinnen volgen die er niet omheen draaien: ‘Ik ben iemand, die de schaamtelooze Hooge Kunst van harte dient. Ik heb behoefte aan schaamtelooze Hooge Kunst. Ik kan niet leven zonder schaamtelooze Hooge Kunst. Ik ben zoo innig verheugd, dat mijne geschriften alle behooren tot de schaamtelooze Hooge Kunst’. En in een slotzin prijst De Haan het Handelsblad meesmuilend voor zó veel aandacht voor de onzedelijkheid dat men het onzedelijk kan noemen: ‘schaamtelooze Hooge Journalistiek’. In zijn brief aan De Koo van 17 april 1908 bespreekt Wiessing ‘de campagne tegen de onzedelijkheid’ in het Handelsblad en legt verband met een recente regeringsverklaring. Het betreft de ‘Regeeringsverklaring’ van 10 maart 1908, afgelegd door T. Heemskerk, de minister van Binnenlandse Zaken en leider van het nieuwe, christelijke kabinet. De regering kondigt als wetsontwerp aan o.a. ‘wijziging en aanvulling van het Wetboek van Strafrecht, met name van de bepalingen tot bestrijding der openbare onzedelijkheid’. Het Handelsblad vond dat deze herziening van het Strafwetboek ‘door een liberaal niet met volle gerustheid [kon] worden tegemoet gezien’, maar vermeldt ook hoe in de Tweede Kamer door de oppositie gesteld werd dat ‘de bestrijding der onzedelijkheid ook door de linkerzijde ter hand [was] genomen’695.. Op 12 maart heeft de minister van Justitie ‘met blijdschap akte [...] genomen van de verklaring der sprekers van de linkerzijde, dat zij gaarne [aan de bestrijding der onzedelijkheid] willen meewerken’. Heemskerk vertrouwt dat ‘de bestrijding der openbare onzedelijkheid algemeen instemming [zal] vinden’. De kaarten zijn geschud. Alleen het Weekblad van het Recht sputtert nog tegen: ‘Scherpere bestrijding der openbare onzedelijkheid beteekent o.i. vaak niet veel anders dan bevordering der niet-openbare’696.. De Haan schreef in De Amsterdammer: ‘Ik voorzie den tijd, dat de onzedelijkheid alleen bij mij veilig zal wezen’. In Parijs las C.S. Adama van Scheltema het opstel ‘Schaamtelooze, hooge journalistiek’. Deze bekende socialistische dichter en theoreticus koesterde heel andere ideeën en idealen dan De Haan. Uit zijn boek De grondslagen eener nieuwe poëzie697. publiceerde De Amsterdammer op 24 mei 1908 een fragment ‘L'art pour l'art’, waaruit wij citeren: ‘Wij moeten aan kunst “wat hebben”, kunst moet ons “wat geven”! Als wij een avond zien dan moet een gedicht onze stemming vertolken en verheffen, als wij liefhebben dan moet de kunst ons hart met lentebloesem bekransen, als wij schreien moeten wij in de kunst de zoete weerspiegeling zien onzer eigen tranen, - dát is kunst, daarvoor is kunst altijd geweest, van de eerste Grieken, van de middeleeuwsche troubadours, tot het voorgeslacht der tachtigers toe - totdat de waanwijzen, hun medemenschen ignoreerend, hun gemeenschap beleedigend, dachten dat zij de meesters in plaats van de edele dienaars dier gemeenschap waren!’698.. Adama van Scheltema besloot zonder verwijl bij Wiessing tegen de publicatie van De Haans opstel protest aan te tekenen699..
B[este] H[enri] Het spijt me dat ik de Groene niet vóór het schrijven van mijn brief gelezen had: - Je hebt een heel erge en heel domme flater begaan met dat stuk van de Haan over... zedelijkheid! Je kunt net zoo goed een landverrader over het leger of een valscharis over eerlijkheid laten schrijven. Ik kan me deze flater en de medewerking van Haan aan de Groene alleen begrijpen zoo je zijn boek ‘Pijpelijntjes’ niet gelezen hebt, - welaan je bent nu verplicht dat te lezen, - lees het... en je zult voorgoed genezen zijn! - m.v. gr. je vr.
