PalestrinastraatBeste meester Eekhoud, ik heb de eerste proefvellen van ‘Pathologieën’ al ontvangen. Boogaerdt maakt geloof ik met de uitgave wel spoed. Toch zal het nog wel eenigen tijd duren, eer het boek geheel voor het gebruik gereed is. Dan kom ik naar Brussel om het u te brengen, als ik reizen mag. Maar dat zal wel. ‘De Nieuwe Gids’, die een voornaam tijdschrift is, heeft proza van mij aangenomen. Tot spijt van alle philistijnen en pharizeeërs gaat het mij, dank zij uwen bijstand, beter. Op het oogenblik zijn alle nette menschen weer tegen mij gericht, omdat ik openlijk de Duitsche officieren heb verdedigd. Er zal nog wat loskomen. Een nette Hollander is een buitengewoon net mensch. Dit briefkaartje (met poststempel) is het eerste schrijven van De Haan aan Eekhoud, dat uit 1907 bewaard gebleven is. In Eekhouds dagboek vinden we, na de vermelding van een eigen, homofiel getint verhaal in het Duitse tijdschrift Das Eigene (‘ma mauvaise Rencontre par le Dr Richard Meienreis’), dat in zijn ogen in dat tijdschrift wel een goed figuur sloeg641., de eerste schetsen van een opstel over Pathologieën van De Haan, op 10 maart 1907. Sinds enige tijd wijdt de wetenschap, aldus Eekhoud, veel aandacht aan het zo ernstige vraagstuk van de homoseksualiteit, vooral in Duitsland642.. Dan gaat Eekhoud op Pathologieën over: het werk wordt dramatisch en belangwekkend genoemd en De Haan zowel kunstenaar als psycholoog. Eekhoud vermeldt Pijpelijntjes en de Pijpelijntjes-affaire, de uitstoting van De Haan uit de socialistische partij als een schurftig schaap, een handelwijze die wel schril afsteekt bij de houding van de Duitse socialist Lassalle ten aanzien van een partijlid. Ook verwijst hij naar het proces van Oscar Wilde en verschillende moedige artikelen in de Franse pers. Dan beschrijft hij de geschiedenis van de twee hoofdpersonen van Pathologieën, een lange lijdensgeschiedenis, verteld met een oneindig fijn oordeel en kunstenaarschap. Ook gewaagt hij van een brief van Johan aan René waarin een analyse van homoseksualiteit wordt gegeven. Aan het eind van het boek wordt Johan krankzinnig643.. In de roman Pathologieën, zoals hij in 1908 verschenen is, vindt men die brief van Johan aan René niet terug. Ook heeft Eekhoud een ander einde van de roman gekend: in het boek pleegt Johan zelfmoord. Op een los blaadje begon Eekhoud opnieuw aan een opstel, weer over het dramatisch en belangwekkend werk, waarin De Haan, schrijver van rang en puntig psycholoog, de ernstige kwestie van de seksuele inversie behandelt644.: dit korte stuk staat duidelijk nog iets dichter bij de ‘Voorrede van Georges Eekhoud’, die in Pathologieën in een vertaling van De Haan zou worden opgenomen. Het lijkt niet gewaagd te veronderstellen dat er juist in die tijd, waaruit geen correspondentie bewaard gebleven is, een levendig contact tussen Eekhoud en De Haan heeft plaatsgevonden. Op 27 juli 1907 vindt men daar in Eekhouds dagboek iets van terug: De Haan heeft hem een knipsel uit het Handelsblad gestuurd, een stukje van Querido over Eekhouds Vertellingen in de vertaling van Lode Baekelmans645.. Wat De Haan in november 1907 precies aan Eekhouds ‘bijstand’ dankt, weten wij niet zeker, maar het zou kunnen zijn: het vinden van een uitgever die voor het voorwoord van een Europese beroemdheid als Georges Eekhoud gevoelig geweest is. Met zijn proza, aangenomen door De Nieuwe Gids, zullen de fijne fragmenten bedoeld zijn die in december 1907 in dat tijdschrift verschenen. Van De Haans verdediging der Duitse officieren zal Eekhoud met instemming kennis hebben genomen. Zelf had hij zich in zijn dagboek ook al met ‘l'affaire Harden Moltke’ beziggehouden, in een aantekening van 31 oktober 1907. (Het proces tegen Eulenburg werd in augustus 1908 afgebroken, toen de vorst totaal ineenstortte646..) De Haan voorspelde: ‘Er zal nog wat loskomen’. En inderdaad. Op 16 november 1907 verscheen De Ware Jacob met een quasi-nieuwsbericht: ‘Jacob Israël de Haan zal met toestemming van “goeie” A. Aletrino, den nieuwsten druk van PYPELYNTJES opdragen aan “liebe” Hohenau647. en “süsse” Eulenburg’. In zijn brief van 25 november 1907 belijdt De Haan zijn vriendschap voor Eekhoud in een paar ontroerende formuleringen. |
