Palestrinastraat. 25 November 1907Beste meester Eekhoud, eindelijk heb ik dan gevonden, wat men hier in Holland over uw bekend Mercure-artikel648. geschreven heeft. Ik heb het blaadje zeer subiet uit het tijdschrift gestolen, op de bibliotheek, en ik zend het u dus. Hoe gaat het al met u? Wanneer kom ik te Brussel? Ja, wanneer. Ik verlang er zeer naar, maar ik kom niet, voordat ik u ‘Pathologieën’ brengen kan en dat zal niet wezen voor in de maan[d] April of Mei. Maar u begrijpt wel, dat ik dan toch niet kom. Als ik iets heel gaarne wil, dan gebeurt het beslist nooit. Ik weet nog niet, waarom ik niet zal kunnen komen, maar het zal wel niet kunnen. Ik lees weinig van u in de Mercure, wel de Chronique de Bruxelles, maar ik ken al die Brusselsche menschen zoo niet. Kunt u niet eens ruzie maken met iemand? Dat is gezellig. Ik ben benieuwd, wat het prul Messet van ‘Pathologieën’ zeggen zal. O, lieve vriend, dat is toch zoo'n prul! Hoe is die toch in de Mercure gekomen? Hij is gewoon Quérido-maan649.. Ik weet zeker, dat hij alle vijanden van Quérido gewoon de huid volscheldt, om Quérido pleizier te doen. Kwaad zal hij van mijn boek niet durven zeggen, omdat U er een mooie voorrede bij hebt gemaakt. En goeds zal hij er niet van willen zeggen, omdat ik met Quérido overhoop lig. Nu: wij zullen zien. Het Handelsblad, dat de grootste liberale krant van dit land is, heeft besloten nooit iets over mijne boeken en mijne tijdschrift-artikelen te zeggen650.. Vindt u dat niet erg liberaal? Maar zoo zijn de menschen hier. Het is hier een zeer eng land. Ik gevoel mij vaak benauwd alsof ik stikken zal. Mijne gezondheid is sinds ‘Pijpelijntjes’ verschenen is nog altijd slecht. Mijn hart is nog steeds ziek. Dikwijls moet ik zeer vele geneesmiddelen gebruiken en dagen lang met pijn te bed liggen. Ik ga met niemand om en ben zeer vereenzaamd geworden. Mijne letterkundige positie wordt beter. Willem Kloos, die onze grootste moderne dichter is, accepteerde vier van mijne kleine beschrijvingen in proza voor zijn tijdschrift de Nieuwe Gids. En Van Deyssel, die onze beste en meest erkende criticus is, kondigt met eenige ophef aan651., dat in de jaargang 1908 van zijn tijdschrift ‘de 20ste Eeuw’ nieuw proza van mij zal verschijnen. Dat nieuwe proza, mijn beste meester, is een tweede deel van ‘Pijpelijntjes’. Leuk hè? Om die duffe Hollanders te laten zien, dat uw vriend zich niet uit het veld heeft laten slaan. Wat zullen de menschen daarvan schrikken. Ik ben toch zoo innig blij, dat u mijn vriend bent en dat ik uw vriend ben. Het is eene van de weinige vreugden die ik heb, maar die vreugde is dan ook van groote waarde. Vergeet mij niet. Ik zal naar Brussel komen, ja zeker. Veel liefs van uwen jongen, Joop
Alsof de redactie van De Ware Jacob deze brief gelezen heeft of anders wel de brief aan Wiessing, zo trefzeker weet zij De Haans gevoelens te parodiëren: ‘Dat is nu nog eens een lieve man, die George Eekhoudt, die snapt me. Hij dweept met mij en ik met hem’ (28 maart 1908). En zo dweepte Albert Verwey, volgens De Haan, met Nine van der Schaaf. Maar eerst volgt hier nog een brief aan Van Eeden, van eind november. Volgens Van Eedens postboek, in die tijd begonnen, ontving hij op zaterdag 30 november 1907 een brief van De Haan. Eind november ook speelde een Gesammt-Gastspiel Berliner Bühnenkünstler Frank Wedekinds Frühlings Erwachen. Eine Kindertragödie in Amsterdam. |
