November 1907.Mijn zeer gewaardeerde heer Haspels, het is precies, zooals u mij langen tijd geleden geschreven hebt: wij schrijven elkander geene lange brieven meer. Wij hebben geenen tijd en geen lust meer, omdat wij de bergen boeken, die wij maken moeten bedekken met stroomen van tijdschriften. Ik doe zelf mee. Soms schaam ik mij daarvoor, want wat geeft al ons werk. U werkt en ik werk, ik geloof van ons alletwee naar onze beste vermogens. Maar wat geeft het? Ik zend u hierbij een aantal kleine prozastukjes. In de eerste plaats voor ‘Onze Eeuw’ en meer in het bijzonder voor u zelven. U zult wel opkijken van dat kalme vastgehouden schrift waarmede deze bladzijden woord voor woord geschreven zijn. Ik hoop zoo, mijnheer Haspels, dat u de diepe ontroering gevoelen zult, waarin ze zijn geschreven. Ik vind het wel prettig, dat kunstenaars om wier oordeel ik wel geef, zulke stukjes mooi vinden. De 20ste Eeuw heeft ervan geplaatst en Groot-Nederland, Elseviers en De Nieuwe Gids hebben ervan geaccepteerd. Ik heb op het oogenblik weer eens geene betrekking en kan dus nu wat werken. De fragmenten, die ik u voor ‘Onze Eeuw’ zend zijn nieuw. Op de bladzijden, die ontbreken stonden boosaardige paradoxen, die u geen genoegen zouden hebben gedaan en die geene zuivere letterkunde zijn638.. U kunt er uithouden, welke u wilt, en mij de andere weeromzenden. Wilt u de blaadjes niet vouwen? Ik ben blij, dat ik dit proza maken kan, dat zuivere woordkunst is. Men kan de woordkunstenarij overdrijven, dat is waar. Zij is ook overdreven. Maar men kan haar als reactie daarop ook verwaarloozen. En ik vind het een teeken van verval, als een uitgever een boek aanprijst, ‘omdat het geen woordkunst is’, zooals de uitgever Van Dishoeck voor een boek van Annie Salomons heeft gedaan. Dat boek is heelemaal geen kunst639.. Mijn boek ‘Pathologieën’ komt nu gauw uit. Te Rotterdam bij M. Boogaerdt. Ik ben zelf niet in Rotterdam geweest, anders had ik zeker dit schrift zelf gebracht. Het boek zal u bedroeven mijn heer, en dat bedroeft mij. Want u zult zien, dat ik een fijn en verfijnd kunstenaar ben, maar bezeten door diabolische machten. Het spijt mij soms, maar ik moet af en toe schrijven over hetgeen u naar aanleiding van ‘Pijpelijntjes’ ‘homosexueele ontuchtigheden’ hebt genoemd. O, mijn leven is zoo moeilijk, omdat ik altijd maar vastheid zoek en geene vastheid vind. Mijne fijne fragmenten vertroosten mij, maar dikwijls ben ik troosteloos en machteloos, en ik heb niet zooals u troost in godsdienst. Is dit een lange brief? Bakhuyzen van den Brink zou hem een kattenbelletje640. noemen.
