Ik zal niet lang meer in Amsterdam blijven, want met September ben ik te Zwolle benoemd aan eene school. Dan ga ik daar ook heen. Ik heb juist weer eenige vermoeiende dagen gehad, en mijn werk leit stil. Wellicht zal Zwolle rustiger zijn. In een kort daarop volgende brief aan Verwey wist De Haan zijn adres in Zwolle al. Daar woonde een joodse familie Meijer Vomberg. Het boekje van Scipio Sighele, dat De Haan las, zal De menigte als misdadigster geweest zijn, Nederlandse vertaling van 1906 van La folla delinquente van 1892. Carry van Bruggen heeft, in een van de laatste hoofdstukken van Prometheus (1919), geen goed woord over voor dit met ‘pompeuze pedanterie’ geschreven boek La foule criminelle, dat ‘ook hier te lande nogal opgang heeft gemaakt’. Romein noemt het als voorloper van Psychologie des foules van Gustave le Bon. ‘Het waren de eerste angstkreten over de “massa” die in deze jaren voor het eerst in het volle licht van het wereldtoneel trad’520.. De Haan heeft een opstel aan Sighele willen wijden. Het beeld dat De Haan geeft van zijn inspiratie, herinnert aan zijn angst voor waanzin. In het woord ‘erg’ in de zin: misschien is het verhaal ‘minder erg dan ik denk’, zien wij een nuance van: pathologisch. |
