Ik zal u zeggen waarom. Omdat 'k zoo zonderling ben geraakt. Van de week, terwijl ik een boekje van Sighele las, stond ik op, en liep in de kamer heen en weer. Toen hoorde ik van begin tot eind of er iemand in mij sprak, en een verhaal opzei, zoo naar, dat 'k er half dwaas van werd. Na 1 September ga ik naar Zwolle. Adres: Thomas à Kempisstraat 26 Dan zal ik u een nauwkeurig afschrift van 't verhaal zenden. Maar of 't goed voor De Beweging is? Ik weet niet. Ik kan 't nu niet opschrijven. Als u 't bezit, en er is gelegenheid laat u 't dan Van Eeden lezen? Misschien is 't minder erg dan ik denk. Maar ik vind 't beroerd, dat zulke verhalen met de besliste gaafheid eener hallucinatie in mij opkomen. Morgen moet 'k naar Meerenberg. Ook zoo iets prettigs. In die tijd stuurde De Haan een ‘stuk’ naar Herman Robbers, redacteur van Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift, een geheel werk of een fragment van het gehele werk(stuk). Zeker gaat het om de hoofdstukken 17 tot en met 21 van de kleine roman Ondergangen (of Samenspanningen); op De Haans brief krabbelde Robbers aantekeningen: ‘schelmatig’, ‘gegoede-naam’, ‘stil-en-rijk’, ‘droevelings’, ‘geldsuitgaven verdwazen’, ‘sterfbaar’, ‘gereed nederhield’, woorden en uitdrukkingen die hem (waarschijnlijk onaangenaam) opgevallen waren en die in de genoemde hoofdstukken van Ondergangen voorkomen. Maar Herman Robbers hield er dan ook literaire opvattingen op na, die hemelsbreed van die van Jacob Israël de Haan verschilden. G.W. Huygens zag Robbers' blijvende verdienste in zijn ‘opkomen voor de materiële belangen van de auteur’, daarbij doelend op zijn activiteiten in de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen521.. Zijn literaire werk behoort volgens Huygens tot ‘een genre waarin een overproduktie ontstond en dat later verfoeid zou worden: de psychologisch-realistische roman uit het “burgerlijke” milieu’522.. Knuvelder oordeelt: ‘De lezer krijgt de indruk dat Robbers schreef met meer zorg dan hartstocht’, en Van Duinkerken: ‘Herman Robbers had veel talent, maar geen greintje genie’. Wim J. Simons ziet in de romans van Robbers verwantschap met de burgerlijke romankunst van de negentiende eeuw, Ter Braak zag hem als product van de Tachtiger periode, in wiens werk het naturalisme ‘een compromis weet te sluiten met de huiskamer’. Volgens Johannes Tielrooy zal men in de toekomst ‘de romans van Robbers als bronnen voor de Nederlandse cultuurgeschiedenis gebruiken’ vanwege de uitvoerigheid van de beschrijvingen. Herman Robbers was een succesrijk auteur. In 1898, nadat zijn verhaal ‘Kamerstemming’ in het Tweemaandelijksch Tijdschrift gepubliceerd was, protesteerde hij in een brief aan redacteur Albert Verwey tegen het karig honorarium (het Tweemaandelijksch Tijdschrift betaalde f 1,50, andere tijdschriften f 2,50 en zelfs f 3,- per pagina) en voegde er veelbetekenend aan toe dat zowel De Gids als Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift en het tijdschrift Nederland hem om kopij gevraagd hadden. Zijn romans De roman van Bernard Bandt (1897) en De bruidstijd van Annie de Boogh (1901) werden gemakkelijk gepubliceerd en hartelijk onthaald523.. Toen hij per 1 januari 1905 als redacteur van Elsevier's aantrad, begon een vruchtbare periode in zijn leven. Hij schreef De roman van een gezin, ‘in zijn soort een uitstekend werkstuk’ (naar het oordeel van G.W. Huygens), en vulde behaaglijk met het eerste deel, De gelukkige familie, vanaf 1906 en met het tweede deel, Eén voor één, tot dik in 1909 talrijke kolommen van zijn eigen blad. D'Oliveira, die hem interviewde524., meent dat Robbers ‘de waarde van den artiest meer zocht in een verheerlijking van het eenvoudige dan van het geestelijk gespannene, van het algemeen menschelijke, dan van het verfijnd individueele’. Robbers verduidelijkt van zijn kant zijn verhouding tot de Tachtigers: hij waardeert 1880 als een ‘verfrissching’, een ‘drang om te komen uit het banale en normale, dat doodend kan zijn voor het eigenlijke leven’. Werken als De gelukkige familie en Eén voor één (ze verschenen uiteindelijk in 1909 en 1910 in boekvorm op de markt) getuigen waarlijk van toewijding en vakmanschap. ‘Robbers werkte hard en ernstig aan zijn romans’ meent G.W. Huygens, ‘te ernstig misschien, want veel humor vinden we niet bij hem’. Onder Robbers' redactoraat was Elsevier's in de eerste plaats een tijdschrift voor literatuur en voor de beeldende kunsten, met medewerkers van naam. G.W. Huygens noemt het ‘een fraai uitgevoerd semi-literair tijdschrift voor een wat bredere lezerskring’ en vermeldt hoe Robbers ‘prominente medewerkers’ aantrok en ‘ook jongeren hun kans’ gaf. Top Naeff525. noemde Robbers zelfs: ‘de belangrijkste impresario voor het talent’. Zo komen we Frits Hopman in Elsevier's tegen en vanaf 1906 een reeks bijdragen van de toen nog onbekende Carry van Bruggen. In 1968 publiceerde Wim J. Simons onder de titel De tijd van Herman Robbers een ‘bloemlezing uit Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift 1905-1937’, waarin we werk aantreffen van Aletrino, Van Oordt, Van Booven, Van Eyck, Roland Holst, Van Looy, Nijhoff, Herman van den Bergh, Adwaïta, Van Nijlen, Jan Prins, Marsman, Boutens, Willem de Mérode en Wilma, Gerrit Achterberg, Hendrik de Vries, Slauerhoff, Székely-Lulofs en Adriaan Morriën en Fijne fragmenten van Jacob Israël de Haan; in de opsomming van medewerkers vinden we bovendien: Couperus, Maurits Wagenvoort, Bloem, Greshoff, Du Perron, Elisabeth Augustin en Mary Dorna. Martinus Nijhoff debuteerde in september 1916 met twee verzen in Elsevier's en publiceerde bijna tegelijkertijd in De Beweging van Albert Verwey, een blad waaraan men vanuit tegenwoordig standpunt geneigd is een hogere literaire ‘status’ toe te kennen dan aan Elsevier's526.. Het is de vraag of de tijdgenoot met die visie op de rangorde tussen de tijdschriften zou hebben ingestemd. ‘Al kleiner werd de kring, die naar ons hoorde’, dichtte Is.P. de Vooys in 1919 ‘ten afscheid’ aan De Beweging. Vrijwel niemand beschouwde De Beweging als het leidend tijdschrift. In elk geval heeft Robbers, toen hij per 1 januari 1905 aantrad als redacteur van Elsevier's, zich volstrekt niet de mindere gevoeld van Verwey, die per 1 januari 1905 aantrad als redacteur van De Beweging. En in de loop der jaren is hij niet tegen Verwey op gaan kijken. In 1906, toen De Haan hem schreef, gold Herman Robbers, redacteur van Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift, grootmeester van de burgerlijke roman, (mede)oprichter van de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen, als een bonze van de Nederlandse literatuur. In zijn brief gaat De Haan ervan uit dat Robbers van de Pijpelijntjes-affaire op de hoogte is en misschien van iemand wiens naam en werk zó in opspraak zijn gebracht, in zijn Maandschrift niets wenst op te nemen. Tegelijk evenwel brengt hij zijn tegenstanders listig als ‘de bende’ ter sprake, een categorie waar een fatsoenlijk redacteur kwalijk sympathie voor zou kunnen voelen. Robbers, die lid van de SDAP was, zal van de Pijpelijntjes-polemiek in Het Volk kennis hebben genomen en misschien ook wel geweten hebben van De Haans Open brief aan P.L. Tak, maar Pijpelijntjes las hij pas een aantal jaren later, in de tweede versie, zoals we kunnen opmaken uit een schrijven van Aletrino aan Robbers uit 1911. |
