En wil ik nu ook gaan? Het zal je misschien lastig wezen mij daarover te schrijven. Vind-je het goed, dat ik Maandag aan de Eendracht ben, en dat wij samen koffiedrinken in de Lunchroom515.? Dat kan er wel af, ja? Mogelijk telefoneer ik even. Het is nu juist niet noodig, dat ik dadelijk vast aan het blad kome. Ik heb niet veel noodig om te leven, dat weet je wel, 'n gulden of tien in de week dan kom ik er wel. Wil je het doen bij Charles B.? Professor Van Hamel zal ook nog eens zijn best doen. Het is een buitengewoon goed en geduldig mensch en genoegen heeft hij nooit van mij gehad. Straks spreek ik Querido ook nog even. Maar die durft mogelijk niet te zeggen, dat hij mij waardeert. Goede vriend, wat wat heb je een goede kijk op de menschen! Juist Maandag, nadat wij erover gesproken hadden, kreeg ik eenen brief van De Koo, dat ik toch niet zulke vreemde bijdragen voor zijn blad zenden zou, want dan kon hij ze niet blijven plaatsen. En De Koo is mij (waarom?) toch zeer genegen. Van Eeden, het spijt mij zoo, dat mijn litteratuur, noch je-zelven noch Albert Verwey bevredigt en wel Kloos en Thijm. Mijn gevoel zegt mij zeer duidelijk, dat het stellig beter is aan uwen kant te staan. Van Willem Kloos kreeg ik eenen zeer bevredigenden brief. Wanneer zal ik eens iets maken, dat gij schoon vindt of Verwey? Ik heb prachtige verzen van Verwey gelezen in de Beweging, eene oude aflevering. Maar wij krijgen alles zeer laat. Het is alles heel mooi en heel troostrijk, wat Verwey maakt. Van een geheel ander schoon als de veelgeprezen verzen uit: Perseponé b.v. In Memoriam Patris516. Het is verdrietig, dat Alberdingk Thijm mij zoo mishandelt. Wil hij misschien bewijzen, dat men een uitmuntend kunstenaar kan zijn en als mensch toch zeer weinig superieur? Verwey heeft het stuk proza, dat ik hem zond nog niet weeromgezonden. Zou hij het in zijn maandschrift plaatsen? Ik zou het redacteur zijnde, beslist niet doen. Geloof je niet, dat Verwey's tijdschrift in dit land niet bestaan kan, tenzij hij schipperen gaat? De goede Hans laat je groeten. We zijn beide zeer verarmd, en zij moet door hare betrekking nog eene schijn van weelde ophouden, die ons zwaar drukt. Het is alles zeer vernederend en moeilijk. Dag beste vrind, mogelijk tot morgen. Als ik er aan getwijfeld heb, dan voel ik nu weer eens duidelijk, dat je een beter vriend voor mij bent, dan Aletrino en Alberdingk Thijm. Beste groeten Joop
Op 5 augustus 1906 verscheen in De Amsterdammer een bijdrage van De Haan, van geheel ander karakter dan de fijne fragmenten: ‘Open brief aan den heer ds. Kropveld van Rijswijk in zake de diepe verzinking van het vroeger bevoorrechte Joodsche volk’. Het is een van de uitzonderlijke gelegenheden in de door ons behandelde periode van zijn leven, waarbij De Haan het Jodendom ter sprake brengt, waaronder hij zichzelf schaart: ‘wij, joden’. Hij baseert zich op het verslag van een lezing van dominee Kropveld in het Handelsblad van 26 juli. ‘Overal, o.a. in Rusland, worden de Joden schandelijk vervolgd. En toch vragen ze zich niet af: voor welke zonde?’ Zo ongeveer had Kropveld gesproken. En hij had speciale zending onder de Joden bepleit. ‘Gij beweert dat 't Joodsche volk diep gezonken is’, aldus De Haan. ‘Het is al zoo'n oud volk, en heeft al zoo veel beleefd. Zou het dan zoo'n wonder zijn als het uitgeleefd ware? Een wonder is eerder het omgekeerde en dat wonder is vrij wel waar. Iederen dag gaat gij er langs en gij ziet het niet’. Met name wijst hij op de intellectuele kracht van het Joodse volk: ‘ook het joodsche intellect is vrijwel gaaf gebleven. In uwe kringen is dat niet onbekend, men ergert er zich over, en wenscht die inferieure ergernis niet eens altijd te verbergen. Denkt gij, dat wij, joden, ons ooit over het intellect van andersdenkenden ergeren? Volstrekt niet, maar wel over hunne domheden, tenzij we 't aangenamer vinden er om te lachen. Hoewel de historie ons 't lachen met domheden goeddeels heeft verleerd’. Tussen de joodse opvattingen over de Messias en de jodenvervolgingen in Rusland ziet De Haan geen verband. Hij zoekt een verklaring eerder op ‘zoo'n beetje ethnografisch’ en op ‘zoo'n beetje historisch’ terrein. Dominee E. Kropveld (hij stond in Rijswijk en was lid van de commissie van de Christelijk Gereformeerde Kerk voor de zending onder Israël, hij was zelf van joodsen huize517.), zo hard aangepakt, verweerde zich op 12 augustus in De Amsterdammer. Zijn ingezonden stuk staat op 6 augustus gedateerd; De Haan had hem een ‘afdruk’ van zijn ‘Open brief’ toegezonden. Het verslag in het Handelsblad, waarop De Haans aanval was gebaseerd, was volgens Kropveld onvolledig en onjuist geweest. Hij had in zijn lezing op ‘goede hoedanigheden’ van de Joden gewezen, op ‘den eerbied voor de ouders, op de huwelijkstrouw, op den weldadigheidszin, op het weinig misbruik maken van sterken drank’ en het in de Joden afgekeurd dat ‘het meerder deel van den vromen zin zijner vaderen is afgeweken’. Er zijn veel Joden die ‘het genot der wereld’ en niet ‘de vreeze des Heeren’ zoeken. Over ‘de verwereldlijking van het joodsche volk’ wordt ook in joodse kring geklaagd. Aldus Kropveld. De Haan kwam niet meer op de zaak terug. In Ontwaking publiceerde hij in augustus 1906 het schetsje ‘Kleedkloppen’, dat regelrecht uit Pijpelijntjes lijkt weggelopen, maar dat zich van Pijpelijntjes en ook van de zwerversschetsjes onderscheidt in de vertelwijze: er is geen ik-verteller. In een straat in een Pijp-achtige buurt heeft een ‘huisjuffrouw’ veel te stellen met haar voortdurend ruziemakende ‘huursters’. Het verhaal, personaal verteld en veelal in erlebte Rede, inclusief het Amsterdamse taaleigen, behandelt dan de affaire die ontstond rondom het vloerkleed van juffrouw Alblas, door de heer Alblas verworven ‘op 'n lootje toe bij 'n dubbeltje sigaren’ en ‘zoo zwaar, dat ze 't temet met z'n tweeën niet dragen konden’. Nu kloppen de dames hun kleden gewoonlijk ‘op 't open veldje achter de buurt’, maar ‘die van Alblas’ heeft nogal over de zwaarte van haar kleed opgeschept en dan wil niemand haar helpen: ‘ze wazzen allemaal bang, dat ze zoo'n zwaar kleed niet houden konnen’. Als ze het dan ‘uitgerold over 't houten hek van de kerk vlakover’ (de Sint-Willibrorduskerk?) een beurt wil geven, komen de buurvrouwen aangesneld, pakken haar de mattenklopper af en gooien het ding over het hek en over de tuin van de kerk. ‘'t Blee hangen half-hoog in 'n boom’. Houdt dit schetsje misschien verband met Pijpelijntjes, tweede deel? Het zou de weergave van een verhaal kunnen zijn, dat de ‘huisjuffrouw’ aan een ik-verteller doet; ook het tweede deel van Pijpelijntjes heeft zo'n ik-verteller gekend. Het zou dan met de roman te maken kunnen hebben zoals de drie schetsjes in Het Volk met het eerste deel van Pijpelijntjes te maken hadden518.. Een zwerversschetsje lijkt het verhaal ons niet. Daarvoor is het vertelde, als we het zo mogen uitdrukken, ook te weinig bijzonder, te weinig decadent. |
