St-Willibrordstraat.Beste Van Eeden, de boodschap aan De Telegraaf509. was: ‘er is nu niets, maar komt u over een poosje nog maar eens’. Maar daar kan ik niet van leven. Als het je dus niet te zwaar valt, dan zou ik wel gaarne zien, dat je toch eens naar den heer Boissevain510. zoudt gaan. Wil je dat doen, goede vriend? Het is toch wel bitter, dat ik na heel wat studie nu niet eens 'n minimumloon van f 500 verdienen kan. Ik heb Albert Verwey een stuk proza gezonden, maar het is toch niet plaatsbaar, dat weet ik wel. Al kon ik de hemel op de aarde verdienen, ik kan geen menschelijk werk maken. Van Kloos kreeg ik eenen prettigen brief, hij waardeerde het werk zeer, maar vreesde toch ook voor zijn tijdschrift. Ik heb veel pijn weer vandaag, dat kuurt weer op morfine uit, helaas. We weten allebei hoe slecht 't is, maar wat geeft 't? Veel vriendelijks Joop
Van Eeden kon De Haans fijne fragmenten in De Amsterdammer niet waarderen en waarschuwde de schrijver dat er ook van de kant van de krant wel kritiek zou komen. De Haans bijdragen vielen in het weekblad van De Koo inderdaad wel enigszins uit de toon. Het was lang geleden dat het blad het voor de Tachtigers had opgenomen en in de literatuur voorop had gelopen. In De Groene, aldus Verwey, ‘verschenen onze eerste beoordeelende prozastukken, [...] zelfs sommige van onze eerste gedichten’511.; De Koo liep beslist niet weg met de Tachtigers, maar ‘aan zijn vrijheidsgevoel dankten de letterkundigen van '80 en hun geestverwanten in de tooneel- en schilderswereld het vrije woord in de Groene’. De Koo ‘bleef zijn blad openstellen voor al wat uit telkens weer andere jongeren opkwam’ en dat beviel de ouderen slecht. In 1909, als De Koo sterft en in De Groene door de Tachtigers herdacht wordt, vinden wij die eeuwig ‘jongeren’ van Tachtig terug als lieden van middelbare leeftijd, die stevig werken aan hun eigen mythevorming en met dépit toegeven dat De Koo ook nóg jongeren had geprotegeerd512.. Rössing spreekt daarover als zijn mening uit: ‘In ieder tijdperk lette hij op het nieuw ontluikende, dat beteekenis in zich sloot’. Sinds 1885 beschikten de Tachtigers trouwens over hun eigen spreekbuis: De Nieuwe Gids, zodat ze De Groene niet meer nodig hadden. En in 1895 kwam De Kroniek van Tak, opgericht ‘tegenover De Koo's Groene’. Men kan zich voorstellen dat De Koo in De Haan een nieuw en veelbelovend talent herkende, maar men kan zich ook voorstellen dat hij voor zijn Amsterdammer, waarin literatuur nog maar een ondergeschikte rol speelde terwijl De Haans werk in die literaire bijt bovendien wel een zeer vreemde eend leek, graag bijdragen van iets andere geaardheid tegemoet zag. Van Eeden had kritiek, Van Deyssel liet niets van zich horen en van Verwey verwachtte De Haan niets. Hij formuleert dat in een paradox: Verwey zou gaan ‘schipperen’, als hij De Haans werk in De Beweging opnam. Het ging De Haan en ook zijn verloofde, Johanna van Maarseveen, financieel niet voor de wind. Maarseveen verdiende als gemeentearts een 1500 gulden per jaar en had als vrouwenarts praktijk aan huis. In de nerveuze vertelling ‘De bloemen en de brief’ (1907), waarin De Haan een ‘singuliere’ relatie tussen een jong jurist en een veel oudere arts, duidelijk geïnspireerd op zijn eigen relatie met Maarseveen, ter sprake brengt, heet het van de arts: ‘Het was onbegrijpelijk, waarvoor zij dit huwelijk had aanvaard, welks onaangename besprekingen haar toch zeer in de praktijk hadden geschaad’, zodat ons een oorzaak voor Maarseveens ‘verarmen’ aan de hand wordt gedaan. Maar een dergelijke parallel tussen literatuur en werkelijkheid kan men natuurlijk slechts onder veel voorbehoud te pas brengen513.. De Haan schreef Van Eeden omstreeks 29 juli 1906 (toen de fijne fragmenten in De Amsterdammer verschenen), vóór 2 augustus (toen Albert Verwey zijn ‘stuk proza’ terugzond). |
