U mijn boek zendende, had ik het voorgevoel wel van Van Eeden's brief, die u zeker met belangstelling lezen zult. Het is mij onmogelijk er iets van te begrijpen. Daar. Kunt u het? Wat kan mij Ruskin schelen? Waarom heeft Van Eeden toch zoo'n paar evangelisten? Daar, dat zijn goede-boodschappenloopers. Mij verwart dit onvaste oordeelen over hetzelfde werk van verschillende critici. Ik hoop, dat u het boek toch wel lezen wilt en wel lezen kunt. Waarom moet ik doen wat Ruskin dee, zou Ruskin doen, wat ik doe? Dat's gemakkelijk als je precies weet, wat kunst wel moet, en wat kunst niet moet. Dat lijkt op Schaepman, die precies de poezie van ieder ding wist b.v. in Zang der Tuinen488.. Het ga u wel. Jacob-Israël de Haan Nou moet u weten, dat Borel Van Eeden had gezegd, dat dit boek nog ‘erger’ was dan het vorige489.. Dat ‘erg’ is kostelijk. Ik vind mij zelf zoo ‘erg’ nog niet. Natuurlijk er staat niks in van ‘God’ en ‘Ziel’.
Gezien het kokette streepje tussen zijn voornamen in de ondertekening moet de volgende brief aan Haspels ook uit deze tijd stammen. De Haan stuurde Pathologieën niet naar hem op, wel wetende dat Onze Eeuw daarvoor geen plaatsruimte zou maken. Het werd er zelfs niet in besproken. Jan Fontijn schrijft in zijn De Haan-biografie Onrust: ‘Jarenlang was De Haan van het joods geloof en het Joodse volk vervreemd geweest. In feite vanaf de tijd dat hij het ouderlijk huis verliet’ (p. 246). De volgende brief aan Haspels nuanceert de stelling dat De Haan met het Joodse geloof gebroken heeft. Hij heeft geen vast geloof, schrijft De Haan, hij heeft precies voldoende geloof om er last van te hebben, maar er is toch ergens een idee van rechtvaardigheid. |
