St. Willibrordstraat.Beste Van Eeden, het spijt mij, dat je mijn werk niet wilt doorlezen, omdat ik niet redeloos maar doe, wat jij goedvindt. Het is ergerlijk, dat je dit van mij verlangen wilt, en het is geheel strijdend met je vroegere brieven aan mij. Ook je brief is ruw en heeft mij bezeerd. Ik weet wel, je denkt, dat je vroeger te week voor menschen waart, en nu ben je zoogenaamd sterk en onvervaard. Ik had mij met behoud van 't eigen recht en de eigen rede, gaarne naar je beter verstand en je dieper inzicht geschikt, maar een redelooze overgave, zooals jij van mij wilt, daar dank ik wel voor. Waarom is de toon van je brief zóó als hij is? Neen, redeloos naar lofsprekers richte ik mij niet, daarvoor blijve mijn leven bewaard. Het is mij toch onmogelijk, zoo verschrokken als ik nu weer van je ben, ook maar in iets boos op je te zijn. Een boek als het mijne is geen neutraal, dat iedereen mooi vindt, zooals ‘de kleine Johannes’ is het heeft sympathie en antipathie. Evengoed als ‘Koele Meren des Doods’. Ik vind het verdrietig, dat mijn werk je geen goed doet, ik vind 't prettig, dat Géo Eekhoud het zoo mooi vindt, maar dat is het voornaamste niet. Het voornaamste is, dat ik-zelf het goed vinde. De volgende dag stuurt De Haan Van Eedens brief naar Van Deyssel, in een poging deze te betrekken in een gezamenlijke vrolijkheid op kosten van Van Eeden. Er was na de discussie over woordkunst in 1902 animositeit tussen Van Eeden en Van Deyssel blijven bestaan. Toen Verwey zich met zijn Beweging van De XXe Eeuw en Van Deyssel afscheidde, had Van Deyssel nog een briefje aan Van Eeden doen toekomen, waarin hij hem tot medewerking aan De XXe Eeuw uitnodigt. Op Van Eedens verbazing reageerde hij met: ‘Gij moest het juist op prijs stellen, dat ik U de gelegenheid wil geven nu en dan eens te tonen of gij mijn niet onverdiende tuchtiging ten nutte hebt gemaakt en den goeden raad U indertijd gegeven opvolgt’487.. Onder Van Eedens ‘goede-boodschappenloopers’ bevonden zich, behalve Ruskin, ook Meister Eckhart en Bach. Van Eeden schreef in ‘Over Woordkunst’: ‘Ik wist het wel altijd, maar ik hoorde het 't eerst duidelijk gezegd door den ouden groot-meester Johan Sebastian Bach. Alle muziek, zeide hij, die niet is ter eere Gods, “ist nur teuflisch Geplärr und Geleier”. Dit pas ik toe op alle kunst’ (1902, II, p. 302). In Pathologieën zal De Haan een Ruskintirade in de mond leggen van de vader van Johan van Vere de With, in het vierde hoofdstuk van het tweede deel. Johan heeft over zijn gevoelsleven geschreven aan zijn vader (‘Ik meen dat mijn gevoel wel bestaansrecht heeft, alleen al omdat het bestaat. Het is mijn recht, dat te meenen, evenzeer als de tegenovergestelde meening uw recht is. De uwe komt met die van de meerderheid van de menschen overeen, en daarom wordt de uwe maatschappelijk geduld en de mijne niet’). De vader antwoordt: ‘Ik vind jou meeningen aangaande je gevoelsleven in het algemeen niet zeer belangrijk. Maar nu het jou betreft, vind ik ze zeer gevaarlijk. Voor mij is onzedelijk nog wel iets anders dan onmaatschappelijk. Ik kan daarover echter geen twistgeschrijf beginnen. Ruskin zegt, dat in zulke woordentwisten de meest onzedelijke mensch altijd zich het meest gerechtvaardigd voelt. En wellicht heeft Ruskin gelijk’. Het is denkbaar dat deze passage ontstaan is onder de indruk van de brief van Van Eeden. |
