Ik stuur u het boek terug, daar ik toch niet in staat ben het uit te lezen. Het begin is eenigzins imitatie van de ‘Koele Meren’ verder op wordt het door stijl en wezen voor mij onleesbaar. ‘Kunst moet ontstaan door vreugde om God's werk’ zei Ruskin, en ik ben dat met hem eens. Ik noem een boek als dit geen kunst. Maar daar je toch je eigen weg blijft volgen en liever gelooft wat lof-sprekers zeggen baat het ook niets of je mijn meening vraagt of weet. Verschoon me dus liever van het beoordeelen van je werk groetend F van Eeden
Van Eeden had van het werk van De Haan het omgekeerde van een hoge pet op en als er eens iets leesbaars uit De Haans vingers komt, lijkt het op Van Eedens eigen werk. Wie zijn die ‘lof-sprekers’ geweest? Waarschijnlijk: Georges Eekhoud. John Ruskin was een Engels dichter, essayist en wereldverbeteraar uit de negentiende eeuw. In 1901 was een bloemlezing uit zijn werk in het Nederlands verschenen, met een voorwoord van Van Eeden. De Haan heeft Van Eeden waarschijnlijk onmiddellijk na ontvangst van diens brief geantwoord: lik op stuk, zoals zijn stijl was. Zijn toespeling op Van Eedens kritische houding verwijst naar diens opstel ‘Over Woordkunst’, het eerste, uit 1902, in De XXe Eeuw, waarin uitspraken als: ‘Het is goed omzichtig te zijn, gematigd en hoffelijk - maar beter is 't dit alles niet te zijn dan het te zijn ten koste van waarachtigheid en oprechtheid, en van de heiligheid der kunst’ (II, p. 281). |
