St. Willibrordstraat.Beste Van Eeden, de getypte afdrukken van mijn boek ‘Pathologieën’ zijn klaar, en Dinsdag, als de losse bladen bijeenen gebonden zijn, zal ik je een exemplaar naar Walden zenden. Ik heb er twee, maar ik mag er geen voor je missen. Wel echter, krijg je een gedrukt exemplaar, dat is natuurlijk, want je bent mijn trouwe en groote vrind. Ik weet, dat je veel in mijn boek zult missen, dat je zeer liefhebt, je hebt dit genoemd: goddelijke wijsheid. Maar ik hoop ook, dat je er de mooie en vertederde dingen uit nemen zult. De woordentaal en de zinnentaal zijn soms vreemd, vergeleken met de dagelijksche taal, maar er is geen woord en geen woordswending bij, die ik niet in mij hebt gehoord, als ik sterk gestemd dit boek bewerkte481.. Wil je mij eerlijk, (ach, dat spreekt vanzelf.) zeggen hoe je het vindt? Georges Eekhoud heeft het al gelezen, en die bewonderde het wel, als een sterk en gaaf boek. Hij zal er eene voorrede bij maken, en ervan verzorgen eene buitenlandsche vertaling. Wat had ik niet liever, dat jij-zelf dit boek bij de lieden zoudt inleiden, die toch mijn vriend bent van jaren her. Nietwaar, in nood heb ik je altijd weer opgezocht, en dat is juist het bewijs, dat ik veel om je geef, en dat ik je vertrouw zooals je patienten doktor F.v.E. betrouwen. Wil je toch nog eene inleiding maken? Je hebt het voor Adriaan van Oort ook gedaan. Het is waar ‘Irmenlo’ was je sympathiek, en helaas, misschien is mijn werk je tegen? Wil je de uitgave van dit boek bij den heer Versluijs aanbevelen? Ik kan wel een uitgever krijgen, maar die staat mij niet aan, en verder ken ik van die lieden geen een. Wil je dat doen, ook al behaagt het boek je niet? Uitgegeven wordt het toch, maar dan op eene wijze, die mij leed doet. Je kunt V. duidelijk zeggen, hoe je tegenover dit mijn werk staat, en dat hij je met de uitgave genoegen [doet], alleen om het boek van je vrind te redden uit mindere handen. Toen Van Deyssel verleden jaar voor Sonneborn482. vroeg, heeft Versluijs het gedaan, en hij zal jou toch meer genegen zijn? Als Eekhoud de voorrede af heeft, zal ik die laten natikken, en je zenden. De goeie Hans laat je groeten. Mijn examen is nu over 'n paar weken weer. Maar mijn hoofd is slap en zwak, helaas. Heb je Sam bezocht, en hoe vond je hem483.? Ik heb hem nog eens geschreven, maar hij wenschte mij niet meer. Misschien kom ik op de kersttijd naar Walden, zooals vroeger. Ben ik nog welkom? Ik hoop, dat mevrouw Martha thee zal hebben en kerstbrood. Ach, alles gaat. Je vriendschap voor Henri484. is weg, je kinderen zijn al heel groot. Het is bedroevend. Dag beste vriend. Adriaan van Oordts Irmenlo verscheen bij Versluys in Amsterdam in 1896 met een inleiding van Frederik van Eeden. In krachtige bewoordingen oppert Van Eeden zijn bezwaren: ‘onbeholpenheid’, ‘stijlfouten, stroefheden of kinderachtige wendingen’ enzovoort. Ook leunde het soms te veel op Van Deyssel, Van Looy, Aletrino en Arij Prins. Des te overtuigender komen de loftuitingen over: ‘sober-grootsch’, ‘dramatisch krachtige bouw’ e.d. ‘Is dit nu realisme, romantiek, naturalisme, vérisme, sensitivisme, symbolisme of wat anders? Het is dit alles te gelijk, kan men zeggen, en toch maar een historische roman’. Wij citeren uit dit voorwoord van Van Eeden om iets te laten zien van wat De Haan van een voorwoord van Van Eeden voor zijn roman Pathologieën kon verwachten. Tegen bezwaren tegen zijn werk zag De Haan kennelijk niet op. |
