113. De Haan aan Haspels, november (?) 1905

Zeer Gewaardeerde Heer Haspels, ik ben ziek en zeer, ach, al te zeer, bezet, maar op uwen goedmoedigen brief antwoord ik even. U hebt schrijvend over mijn werk gesproken van 'n demonische macht, die de auteur van ‘Pijpelijntjes’ moest bezielen. Ik vraag u, is voor u niet waar: God = goed. Demon: slecht? Ik weet wel, boekbeoordeelingen schrijft men in haast en men weet niet, hoe diep men den armen auteuren soms deert. Ik weet wel, ik heb uw woord ‘demonisch’ zoo bar gevoeld, omdat ik eenen demon soms in mijne ziel gevoel. Nu, wat baat het? Mijn angst is, of ik met schrijven over homosexueele dingen geen kwaad
bedrijf? De een zegt wel, de ander zeit niet. Ik begeer voor alle menschen vrijheid, ook voor deze door u genoemde: perversen. Maar is dit goed? Weet u het? Weet ik het? Ik weet geen inzicht en geen uitkomst. Mijn boek: Pathologieën is klaar na lang lijden. Als het aan ‘Onze Eeuw’ besproken wordt, scheld mij niet weer voor een demonisch mensch.
Ja, hebt gij Gods woord niet? En dat u steunt? Ik heb Gods woord slechts voor een redelijk deel, dat wil zeggen juist beroofd van steunende kracht. Sommigen prijzen mij, anderen laken mij. Weet u richting en weg?
Wees toch voorzichtig met uwe woorden. Misschien hecht ik aan u te veel waarde, of u aan mij te min.
Ik vind uw proza wel mooi. Misschien raak ik weer gezond. Dan wil ik een boek maken over de wijsheid en schoonheid der joden. Maar nu ben ik verdoold, en ben met achting uw
