Daarom plaagt men mij zoo bitter. Omdat men is: ‘bang voor mijn kunst’. Daarom ook spreekt men in Holland weinig over mij. Daarna heeft men mij gehaat. Pats, men hoorde van ‘Pijpelijntjes’. Nu is 't mij iets beter. In 't Duitsch moet men ze vertalen. Vergeef me, ik ben doodmoew.
Was Eekhoud zelf ‘zó’? H.J. H.J. Op 29 augustus 1905 beschrijft hij ‘the beautiful lads that were bathing that evening! How pagan was that impression!’. De tekst is gedeeltelijk onleesbaar gemaakt met bleekwater of een scherp mesje, gedeeltelijk uitgescheurd: ‘We [onleesbaar gemaakt] at the same time. It was fine!’ In oktober 1908 is er een ‘young butcher’; ‘I caught his arm and we walked as two loving brothers’. Om de zoveel dagen komt de herinnering: ‘I am always thinking of my good, lovely young peasant’ en ‘I dream always of my darling peasant’. Nog in 1911 is er van de ‘peasant butcher’ sprake: ‘He writes me that he lost the two hundred twenty franks I had given him a week ago’. Eekhoud stuurt dan dertig frank. Dat doet hij regelmatig: ‘I send thirty to my peasant-butcher’ (april 1912). In april 1908 ontbreken vijf bladen. En in 1910 moeten uitgebreide teksten over ‘my lovers’ opgeschreven zijn, met ondertitels als: ‘I had him better’, ‘I had him best’, ‘My lovely boy’ en ‘The most divine thing!’.
