103. De Haan aan Saalborn, augustus (?) 1905
Woensdagavond.
Beste jongen, ik weet wel, dat ik tegenover U te kort kom in vriendelijkheid en in waardeering. Maar dat is doordat mijn leven te druk is geworden.
Het is nu voor mij vacantie, voor U zeker ook? Welnu, als ge kunt kom dan Vrijdag middag a.s. om drie uur in de Palestrinastraat. Het zal mij genoegen doen.

Op 16 augustus 1905 zocht De Haan contact met de francofone Vlaamse schrijver Georges Eekhoud, die, naar hij waarschijnlijk op dezelfde dag van Victor Resseler alias Segher Rabauw had gehoord (De Haan liet nooit gras over iets groeien), een kritiek op Pijpelijntjes had gepubliceerd. Hij wist zelfs Eekhouds adres niet. Op de enveloppe schreef hij: ‘Den Heere: Georges Eekhoud. / Dichter van vaerzen / te / Brussel / België’ en in de linker benedenhoek: ‘Gelieve zéér het juiste adres op te zoeken!’. Een andere hand streepte ‘te Brussel’ door en preciseerde: ‘bij de gezusters Jespers / Zoersel bij Oostmalle / Antwerpen’. Behalve het Amsterdamse poststempel (van 16 augustus 1905) draagt de enveloppe ook het stempel van Brussel (eveneens 16 augustus) en dat van Oostmalle (17 augustus). Via deze gezusters moet Eekhoud de brief ontvangen hebben. De adressering heeft hem waarschijnlijk als zo curieus getroffen dat hij niet alleen De Haans brief, maar ook de omslag bewaarde. Zo schreef men in de achttiende eeuw: Boerhaave, Europa! Eekhoud was overigens een beroemdheid op het gebied van het proza, volstrekt niet op dat der poëzie.
