Brieven van en aan Jacob Israël de Haan 1899-1908

St. Willibrordstraat.Zeer Geeerde meester Eekhoud, uit Antwerpen schrijft men mij, dat gij in Duitschland over mijn boek ‘Pijpelijntjes’ hebt geschreven. Ik begeer zeer sterk uw schrift over mijn werk te lezen, en ik heb moeite gedaan het te bekomen. Maar mijn moeite is machteloos geweest. Nu bidde ik u te vragen dit: wen werkelijk Gij mijn werkje hebt beschreven, eilieve, zij bereid en zend mij dit, en ik weerzend het u weder. Of doe mij weten, waar u hebt geschreven? Het stuk dat Georges Eekhoud over Pijpelijntjes schreef, is in een Duitse vertaling te vinden in het Jahrbuch für sexuelle Zwischenstufen mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Homosexualität, dat door een ‘Wissenschaftlich-Humanitäres Komitee’ en onder leiding van Magnus Hirschfeld werd uitgegeven, en wel in het jaarboek van 1905 in een ‘Bibliographie der holländischen Schriften für das Jahr 1904’ van jonkheer J.A. Schorer. Eekhoud heeft de tweede versie van Pijpelijntjes onder ogen gehad, dus niet die van Sam en Joop, maar die van Hans (Felix) Deelman en Cor Koning (de Duitse tekst zegt: ‘Leo Koening’, gevolg waarschijnljk van moeilijkheden met Eekhouds handschrift). In Eekhouds opinie is Pijpelijntjes ‘ein interessanter realistischer, ja naturalistischer Roman’. Als hoofdpersonen treden ‘zwei Studenten’ op, ‘Freunde oder vielmehr Geliebte’, de een ‘ein neuropathischer Homosexueller’ (daarmee is Cor Koning bedoeld), de ander (Hans, in Pijpelijntjes I: Sam) ‘ein Bisexueller, dessen Sexualität sich mit einer Art Sadismus kompliziert’. Beiden zijn ‘von minderwertiger Moralität und Intelligenz, zugleich lasterhaft [verdorven, pervers] und alltäglich sentimental’. Cor (in Pijpelijntjes I: Joop), volgens Eekhoud ‘der am meisten Invertierte der beiden’, ‘betrog sehr oft seinen Freund mit jungen Vagabunden, mit zerlumpten Voyous, mit Hafenarbeitern Amsterdams, die sich für einen Gulden prostituierten’, een voorstelling van zaken die meer aan Eekhouds eigen romans doet denken dan aan Pijpelijntjes met zijn keurige schoenpoetsertje Koos van de Dam die het verdiende geld aan zijn meissie afdraagt. De passages waar Cor zich met de ‘Epheben der Gosse’ afgeeft (‘der Roman ist das Tagebuch Koenings’), ‘sind äusserst eigenartig und bilden eine vorzügliche Dokumentation des erotischen Lebens des vulgären Uraniers’, aanbevolen aan allen ‘die die Frage der sexuellen Perversion interessiert’. Eekhoud prijst dan ‘die Aufrichtigkeit und Spontaneität der Eindrücke und Impulse von P'tit’ (Cor alias Joop), die aan de roman ‘einen lyrischen, ja ergreifenden Charakter’ geven, maar in het algemeen is de roman toch tweederangs. ‘Es ist mehr ein interessantes als ein schönes Werk’. En in elk geval meer waard dan ‘was holländische Prüderie schon darüber gesagt hat’. Eekhoud vermeldt dan één goede kritiek, die van Segher Rabauw in het Antwerpse tijdschrift Ontwaking, en veroordeelt de overige critici in Holland om hun ‘polemischen Ton’ en ‘recht bedauernswerte persönliche Anfeindungen’, vijandelijkheden zoals Eekhoud uit ervaring kende. Er is een parallel tussen het lot van Pijpelijntjes en dat van Eekhouds roman Escal-Vigor uit 1899. Eekhoud had wegens die onzedelijke roman in 1900 een proces aan zijn broek gekregen en was, precies zoals De Haan, slaags geraakt met de socialisten, die verklaarden: ‘après avoir lu Escal-Vigor, nous avons pensé que c'était pour nous, socialistes, un impérieux devoir de lutter contre les tendances littéraires manifestées par ce livre’458.. Daarmee houdt de overeenkomst op. Het proces eindigde met Eekhouds triomfantelijke vrijspraak en zorgde ervoor dat zijn naam ‘weit über Belgiens Grenzen hinaus’ bekend werd en dat Escal-Vigor herdruk op herdruk beleefde459.. De Haan daarentegen werd door de Pijpelijntjes-affaire helemaal niet beroemd, niet eens in Nederland, en zijn boek verdween in vergetelheid en semi-pornografische ramsj: eind 1905 was het, zoals blijkt uit een nieuwe advertentie in het Nieuwsblad voor den Boekhandel, nog lang niet uitverkocht en tenslotte werd het tegen verminderde prijs door de tweedehandsboekhandelaar August Koster, specialist in boeken over het huwelijksleven, de prostitutie, de anatomie, realistische romans enz.460., overgenomen. Eekhouds stuk over Pijpelijntjes is niet bijzonder treffend en beslist ook weinig positief. Maar intussen was hier nu precies gebeurd wat De Haan zo vurig gehoopt had: een beroemd schrijver had zich met Pijpelijntjes beziggehouden, hij had het boek niet hemelhoog geprezen, verre van dat, maar het ook niet verworpen en hij had de Hollandse burgerluitjes een knik met de vuist gegeven. Het was de officiële erkenning die De Haan van Lodewijk van Deyssel niet gedaan had kunnen krijgen. En slonk Van Deyssel zelfs eigenlijk niet tot een provinciaal baasje naast de internationaal befaamde figuur van Georges Eekhoud, schitterend romancier, professor aan de Université Nouvelle te Brussel, medewerker van de Mercure de France, medewerker en redacteur van nog een dozijn andere periodieken461., leider van de jonge literaire generatie in een land dat ons land ‘in de jaren tachtig steeds enkele passen voor’ was gebleven: er was ‘steeds enkele jaren verschil tussen de Brusselse en Amsterdamse ontwikkeling’462.? Bovendien werd Eekhoud in homofiele kring nog extra vereerd als ‘Bahnbrecher in der künstlerischen Darstellung der Homosexualität’, als ‘Pfadweiser für die poetische Auffassung der Urningsliebe’463.. Hij werkte aan het Jahrbuch mee, was zekere tijd lid van het Obmänner-Kollegium van het Komitee (met: Von Römer, Schorer en Meienreis), publiceerde ook een homofiele novelle ‘Eine schlimme Begegnung’ (‘Une mauvaise rencontre’, vertaald door Meienreis) in Der Eigene, een periodiek für Kunst und männliche Kultur van de geruchtmakende Adolf Brand464.. Maar Eekhoud legt iets voornaams, iets opbouwends in de homoseksualiteit dat in De Haans werk ten enen male ontbreekt. Eekhouds homofielen hebben, heel anders dan Sam en Joop, een veredelende invloed op hun omgeving. Zo laat Eekhoud in ‘Eine schlimme Begegnung’ zijn verfijnde hoofdpersoon Léonce verdwalen in een huis van vermaak, waar een uitgekookt gezelschap op zijn geld, zijn sieraden en zijn leven loert. Een jonge galgenbrok noodt hem ten dans. Léonce weet dan een zo grote morele invloed op de schone schurk te verwerven dat die niet alleen zijn leven spaart, maar zelfs zijn bloeddorst op hoger doeleinden richt: hij wordt anarchist en pleegt een politieke moord. Bij de terechtstelling van de edele boef komt prins Léonce aangesneld. De guillotine scheidt met één slag beider hoofd van de romp en die afgehakte hoofden vinden elkaar in een innige laatste kus in de afvalbak. Dit alles staat wel heel ver van het bed van Sam en Joop. En zo is Eekhouds voorbehoud ten aanzien van Pijpelijntjes wel verklaard. Maar De Haan, die het in zijn Open brief aan P.L. Tak niet verder had gebracht dan een tegen diens zin gepubliceerde particuliere brief van Lodewijk van Deyssel, moet het wel diep hebben betreurd dat Eekhouds kritiek voor die brochure te laat kwam. Via de gezusters Jespers te Zoersel bij Oostmalle moet De Haans brief de ‘Dichter van vaerzen’ bereikt hebben. Op dinsdag 29 augustus 1905 noteert Eekhoud in zijn dagboek: ‘Ecrire à [...] Jacob de Haan’. Intussen had De Haan het weer vruchteloos aan de stok gehad met het ‘orgaan van den Bond van Nederlandse onderwijzers’, De Bode. Op 18 augustus 1905 klaagde De Haan in dat blad per ingezonden brief over ‘de ontzettend dwaze geruchten, die hardnekkig mij schennend, rondliepen’; hij betichtte De Bode ervan hem ‘buiten de geestelijke gemeenschap van den Bond’ te sluiten en verwees naar zijn Open Brief aan P.L. Tak. De redactie stelde kort en goed vast dat zij de noodzaak van een beoordeling van Pijpelijntjes of van de Open brief aan P.L. Tak niet inzag. De gedachte om fijne fragmenten te publiceren, misschien toch weer stukjes uit Pathologieën, liet De Haan niet los. Omstreeks 20 augustus 1905 richtte hij zich tot de redacteur van De Beweging, het blad dat Verwey had opgericht, toen hij eind 1904 uit De XXe Eeuw stapte. In zijn ‘Inleiding’ op De Beweging beschrijft Verwey hoe hij ‘het eens zoo schoone bondgenoodschap’ met Van Deyssel (die De XXe Eeuw voortzette) moest beëindigen, omdat deze mederedacteur geen onderscheid meer maakte tussen hun tijdschrift en andere tijdschriften (waarin hij ook publiceerde). Verwey hechtte aan een orgaan van een geestelijke Beweging, die aan het woord was gekomen in De Nieuwe Gids (in 1885), het Tweemaandelijks Tijdschrift (in 1894), De XXe Eeuw (in 1902) en sinds 1905 dus in De Beweging. Een tijdgenoot als Frank van der Goes zag dat anders465.. Volgens hem fingeerde Verwey een beweging die er niet was. De traditie van De Nieuwe Gids was binnen De XXe Eeuw wel voortgezet, maar ook daarbuiten, in de tijdschriften waarin Van Deyssel publiceerde: Van Deyssel had, ‘zittende in het veen van stapels kopie, niet op eenige turfjes te zien’, en hij had gelijk. Van der Goes zag in Verwey's beweging ‘zelfmisleiding’ en ‘zelfvereering’. Zijn voorkeur ging uit naar een blad ‘zonder malle kuren’, waar men graag zijn kopij heen zond en waar de redactie weinig invloed had en geen leiding gaf. In zo'n redactie zag hij Verwey graag: als ‘aangenaam en eervol gezelschap’ en als goed administrateur466.. De Haan stuurde twee turfjes naar De Beweging. In zijn antwoord op De Haans brief, in afschrift bewaard gebleven, zien we Verwey optreden als goed administrateur van een literair tijdschrift en we zien hem leiding geven. |
