St. Willibrordstraat.Beste heer Van Deyssel, ik heb vroeger óók gedacht, dat u enkel litterair voor uw tijdschrift oordeelde, maar ik heb dat niet-gedacht later, toen u mij niet toestond fragmenten uit Pijpelijntjes in uw tijdschrift te publiceeren. Weet ge wel?454. Ik gaf u vrijheid van keus en dus hadt ge de naar uw inzicht fraaiste dingen kunnen kiezen. Ik dacht toen: ‘zelfs Van Deyssel is bang voor het publiek’, en dat vond ik niets prettig. Maar misschien was uw inzicht het betere. Ik wil liever eerst mijn heele boek ‘Pathologieën’ afmaken, en zien hoe het dan met mij staat. En of u het misschien geheel of halfdeels (het bestaat uit twee (kleine!) deelen, een te Culemborg, één te Haarlem.) plaatsen wilt. Ik ben zoo ziek en zoo moew. En kan met veel zware moeite maar weinig doen. Nu vandaag had ik u zoo gaarne goed geschreven en ineens val ik weer in. Gegroet Jacob Israël de Haan
Op 13 augustus 1905 lukte het De Haan zijn weerwoord op Taks bespreking van de Open brief gepubliceerd te krijgen en wel in het weekblad De (Groene) Amsterdammer. H.P.L. Wiessing, die op 3 november 1907 als hoofdredacteur en opvolger van Johannes de Koo bij De Amsterdammer in functie trad, geeft in zijn autobiografie Bewegend portret een samenvatting van de gebeurtenissen rondom De Haan en zijn Pijpelijntjes: ‘Kort vóór mijn tijd had Tak hem uit de redactie van de kinder-krant van Het Volk gezet en hard de deur achter hem dichtgeslagen. Die stevige Zeeuw had namelijk kennis gekregen van Jacob Israël's mag ik zeggen: literaire maidenspeech “Pijpelijntjes”, waarin deze allerlei homoseksuele dierbaarheden uitliet, en papa Tak vond die niet precies de sfeer voor “het kind”. [...] Men gaf die oude heer zeer zeker gelijk, maar velen meenden, dat hij wat demonstratief had gehandeld en voelden meelij met Jacob. De allereerste, die meelij had, was De Koo, een ideaal redacteur, die ervan hield de jeugd een steuntje te geven, en die bovendien nog wel iets met Tak had te vereffenen’455.. Dat zou dan te maken hebben met de oprichting van De Kroniek door Tak in 1895, een concurrent van De Koo's Groene, met medewerkers als Diepenbrock, Frans Coenen, André Jolles en Berlage456.. ‘De Tachtigers en wij’, laat Wiessing in zijn mémoires Coenen zeggen, ‘hielden van Tak meer dan van De Koo. [...] De Koo was [...] te overwegend politiek van levenshouding’. De jongeren publiceerden bij voorkeur in De Kroniek. Toen in de zomer van 1905 Jacob Israël de Haan met een stuk tegen Tak bij De Amsterdammer aanklopte, zag De Koo een kans om zijn appeltje met De Kroniek te schillen. Toch schreef De Haan al lang daarvóór in De Amsterdammer: stukken over Verlaine, Speenhoff en A.G. van Hamel op 18 oktober en 1 en 22 november 1903. De Haan is dus niet als vijand van Tak in De Amsterdammer begroet en binnengehaald. De Koo gaf hem in zijn ongelijk gevecht met de SDAP-baas een steuntje in de rug; dat wel. Het was De Haans laatste openbare afrekening met Tak, weer in de vorm van een open brief, met de aanhef: ‘Waarde Tak!’457. De Haan behandelt opnieuw de kwestie van de socialistische of anarchistische onderwijzer die neutraal les kan geven en brengt in dit verband de Pijpelijntjes-brief van Lodewijk van Deyssel ter sprake. Natuurlijk ligt bij hem het accent op Van Deyssels erkenning van De Haan als ‘zeldzaam en goed kunstenaar’. En over De Haans ontslag had Tak, naar de woorden van Van Deyssel, moeten zeggen: ‘Ik geef toe, dat De Haans ontslag niet geheel thuis behoort in de sociaal-democratische neutraliteitstheorieën, maar het is juist wanneer eene theorie zoo in hare uiterste consequentie wordt toegepast als door De H. geschiedt, dat men er het wankele of te ver gedreven deel van gewaar wordt’.
We laten hier een brief van De Haan aan Saalborn volgen, die deze in Brieven aan een jongen (p. 21/3) op de brieven van 25 en 26 juli 1908 laat aansluiten. Saalborn herinnert zich in zijn commentaar dat na deze brief zijn eerste bezoek aan ‘Jaap’ De Haan plaatsvond: ‘Jaap deed zelf open. Hij droeg Truitje Zweep op een fluwelen kussen. Truitje Zweep was een parel-grijze kater, waar hij blijkbaar nogal trots op was’. Als Saalborn vraagt naar De Haans romans (‘die toen nog als geheimzinnige onbekenden voor mij achter hem stonden’), weigert De Haan daarover te spreken: ‘dat was nog niet goed voor me’. Zelf had hij ‘het er erg moeilijk door’: ‘De breuk met Het Volk woog hem zwaar’. Hij bood Saalborn aan, hem bij de publicatie van diens eigen werk te helpen ‘bij de redakties’. De vrienden spraken over letterkunde en De Haan zou gezegd hebben dat ‘de lui van de Nieuwe Gids, Kloos vooral’, in hun ‘abstracte verheerlijking’ van ‘het zogenaamd mooie’ in de kunst ‘veel te ver [waren] gegaan’. Wat de zedelijkheid betreft, zou De Haan gezegd hebben: ‘als je over dingen moet schrijven, die de mensen onzedelijk vinden, omdat het niet past in de moraal die ze hebben gemaakt, dan is dat je recht’. Deze herinneringen van Saalborn doen weinig geloofwaardig aan. De kritiek op het Tachtiger estheticisme lijkt onwaarschijnlijk: De Haan was in 1908 van oordeel dat Kloos en Van Deyssel zich juist veel te veel aan het bekrompen lezerspubliek gelegen lieten liggen. Ook lijkt het onaannemelijk dat De Haan in 1908 nog diep onder de breuk met Het Volk gebukt ging, al was in een polemiek in De Hofstad kort daarvóór inderdaad de Pijpelijntjes-affaire opgerakeld (toen H. van Loon zijn begrip voor Tak en de zijnen onder woorden bracht: ‘de schurftige schapen moeten geweerd uit vrees voor besmetting’). Onaannemelijk is ook dat De Haan in augustus niet met Saalborn over Pathologieën wou praten, nadat hij hem in juli een exemplaar van die roman had geschonken en hem naar zijn mening had gevraagd. Verder wekt het plotseling opduiken van de voornaam ‘Jaap’ in Saalborns commentaar verbazing: niets in hun correspondentie wijst erop dat De Haan, die zich in die tijd ‘Joop’ placht te noemen, zich door Saalborn tutoyeren liet. Andersom gaat De Haan tegen Saalborn vanaf 1906 de je-vorm gebruiken; in deze brief is het nog (voornamelijk) U en ge. |
