101. De Haan aan Van Deyssel, 1 augustus 1905 (volgens poststempel)

Beste m'neer Van Deyssel, nu moet ik u nog eens over mij schrijven. Ik hoop, dat mijn laatste brief u heeft goedgedaan, en dat u begrepen hebt, dat ik niet Aletrino leed heb gedaan opzettelijk. Hij mij ook niet, heelemaal niet. Wij hebben elkaar wel domme dingen te vergeven, maar geene slechte.
Meent ge voorts, dat ik de publicatie van uw brief zoo aangenaam vond? Neen, neen, wis en waarlijk niet. In 't algemeen is publicatie van enen brief slecht. Maar dit hier was toch een goede en verstandige brief, en die mij zeker baten zal, en u niet schaden. Ik hoop, dat ge dit zult inzien, en dat ge mij dat niet kwalijk zult nemen.
Mijn leven is veranderd. Het is nu heel moeielijk geworden. Doch wel met een beetje kans op verbetering.
Prof. Mr. G.A. van Hamel heeft mij een plaatsje weten te bezorgen aan de Rijksverzekeringsbank. Mijn salaris is héél klein, maar f 520 't heele jaar. Daar moet ik mee leven, bovendien nog bekostigen mijn studiën ook. Het is dus geen gemakkelijk leven. Bovendien is het leven hard, en zijn de dagen lang van zeér vervelend werk. Toch moet ik dat nu verdragen met hoop op verbetering.
Maar nu wou ik u eens heel ernstig iets vragen. Ge hebt mijn vorig werk zoo zeer geprezen. Daar was ik blij om. Aletrino en ik beiden stelden uw oordeel heél zeer op prijs, ge weet dat wel. Anders had ik het u niet gevraagd. Mij dunkt, het moet u ontwijfelbaar leed doen als mijn kunst ondergaat. Dat heeft niets te maken met wat wij aan dwaze dingen in ons dagelijks leven doen.
Nu zou het mij aangenaam zijn in uw tijdschrift enkele stukjes proza uit mijn roman ‘Pathologieën’ te publiceeren. Ik heb dat boek voor een goed deel af, en het is met veel zorg door mij meegeleefd en gewerkt. Ik gloof dus niet, dat het slechte kunst zal zijn, en die uw kunstvol tijdschrift ontsieren zal. Wilt ge mij in uw naaste nummer drie of vier bladzijden afstaan? Onder den naam: ‘fijne fragmenten’ zal ik u dan het zenden.
Ik had u natuurlijk nu wel de copij kunnen geven. Doch, (ik mag toch ronduit blijven?) ik weet niet, of u niet weigeren zoudt uit persoonlijke boosheid. En vergeefs
overschrijfwerk kan niet lijden.
Wilt ge me even schrijven als het goed is? Doen?
Ge behoeft u over Aletrino niet zoo bezorgd te maken. Ik houd nóg veel van hem. Gloof me, het leven zal ons alles wel weer goedmaken.
Het moet nu wel mooi zijn te Baarn en aangenaam om te wonen. Is het niet? Hier woont de stad niet zoo heel goed. Maar ik heb mijn kunst, en dat is weer heel veel. God, heer Van Deyssel, ik heb niet geweten, dat onze kunst zoo zwaar van moeite was, maar ook zoo heugelijk van vreugd.

Ik heb een kaart van de litteratoren club. Maar geene statuten.
De contributie was net 'n week van mijn loon. Enfin. Toch wel leuk, om lid te zijn.
Op deze brief moet Van Deyssel geantwoord hebben dat er tegen bijdragen van De Haan in De XXe Eeuw geen bezwaar bestond en dat de redacteur uitsluitend literaire maatstaven aanlegde. Toch doet De Haan in zijn volgende brief over de fijne fragmenten een beetje moeilijk.
Interessant is de beschrijving van Pathologieën, dat toen uit twee, kleine, delen bestond; de gepubliceerde roman bestond in 1908 uit drie delen.
