Zeer gewaardeerde heer Van Deyssel, de laatstloopende post brengt mij uw brief, die mij op zich-zelf wel een vreugd is, maar met bitter verdriet. Ik zal u er precies op antwoorden. Nietwaar, ik heb u wel nooit ontmoet, maar er is toch van u naar mij iets meer dan niets, en dat uit zich nu in uw iet-en-wat wreveligen brief. De zaak met de litteratorenclub is deze. Ik geef u er namen en klare faam van. Het moet dan maar blijken, wie óndeugende leugens zeit. Ik ben het mij welbewust sterk niet. Ik schreef Quérido432., dat ik maar geen lid werd, omdat er toch ook contributie aan vast zat433., en ik zeer verslagen in mijn geldzaken was. En ook omdat ik waarlijk geen twee, mijne voorstanders434., wist, daar Borel zich blijkbaar niet wilde compromitteeren. Quérido schreef mij toen, en dat was in Maart, dat hij gaarne mij als lid had, en mijn aanvrage wel wenschte te steunen. Als Henri Borel niet wou, dan snorde hij wel een tweede op. Hij noemde toen Mr. Coenen en u, of hij het u vragen zou. Ik was daar niet op gesteld, (Coenen is een vriend van Aletrino, en gij behandelde mij, mijner meening, niet goed.) en Borel maakte zich tweede. Daarna hoorde ik er niets van. Zondag sprak ik Borel, en die zei mij, dat gij het waart geweest, die u tegen mijn lidmaatschap hadt opgezet, daar uw goedgunstig oordeel over mijn werken geheel veranderd was. Hij had dit van Querido (pats, herrie met Quérido!) en slechts door diens hulp was ik er door heen gehaald. Zóó is 't mij verteld, en niet anders. Ziet-ge, geachte heer Van Deyssel, ik ben volstrekt geen buitenmatig goed mensch, en mijn leven is van der jeugd af, niet beter geweest, omdat ik niet beter was. Maar gelogen heb ik nog niemaals, neen niemaals. En ik heb óók niet gevreesd de waarheid niet te miszwijgen. Best mogelijk, dat ik nu weer van Quérido of van Borel op mijn kapotte kop krijg, doch op een kop zoo grof geslagen voelt men vijf zes patsen niet. Trouwens al voelde ik nog leed en zeer, dan zweeg ik toch niet. Ook mogelijk, dat ik een groote mond heb. Maardan liever eén groote mond, dan twee, die ieder 'n andere spreuk spreken. Ik voel, dat u een weerzinnige antipathie tegen mij hebt, dat spijt mij. Maar ik weet het niet te hebben verdiend, en het is dus geen verwijtende spijt. Ik heb uw brieven aan Borel laten lezen. Laat gij uw brieven niet aan hen lezen, die u vriendelijk zijn? Borel heeft onaangenaam over u geschreven435., en u verweten, dat gij mij niet hebt beschermd, die de dappere practicus was der, ook door u bepleite, N-G. theorieën. Meent ge, dat ik Borel dat instak? Hadde ik het geweten, ik had het hem verzocht te laten. Maar wist ik het? Meent ge, dat ik niet onaangenaam werd aangedaan daardoor? Trouwens, ge hebt mij beloofd, over het gebeurde te zullen schrijven. Niet om prijs en baat voor mij was mij dit aangenaam geweest, maar om der wille van het schunnig geschonden litteratuur princiep, dat ons heilig en heerlijk moest zijn. Gij hebt gezwegen. Is voor ú dan een belofte niet iets zoo liefs, als een eigen kind? Ge moest mij niet zoo diep verwijten, dien ge daarmee zoo diep grieft. Gij zijt geen minne mensch, wiens woorden slechts belachbare waarde hebben, gij zijt Lodewijk van Deyssel. Weet ge het niet? En ieder woord, dat gij mij doet toekomen heeft zijn waarde van u. Ge verwijt mij, en dat lijkt slagraak, dat ik ‘P’ in den bekenden vorm uitgaf zonder A. te hebben geraadpleegd. Van wien weet ge dat? Het is een schreiende schande gewoonweg. Aletrino wist, dat ik de schetsen schrijvende was, hij wist, dat de opdracht aan hem was. Gelezen had hij ze niet, dat 's waar, net zoo min, als ik zijn novelle ‘Zomeravond’ had gelezen, die hij mij opdroeg. Moet hij nu zoo tegen mij doen? Ik weet wel, dat hij nu laat rondvertellen, dat ik slechts een merkwaardige zenuwlijder voor hem was. Welnu, als dat zoo is, dan zal hij zijn houding tegen de andere zenuwmerkwaardigheden maar eens moeten wijzigen. Anders komt hij nog wel eens voor andere dingen te staan. Hij heeft mij dingen onderwezen met alderscherpste aandacht, die men niet aan een boy van twintig jaar onderwijst, ja, was ik toen wel al de twintig vol436.? Daar beklaag ik mij niet over, al is mijn gemoed vergiftigd en mijn leven verdorven, dat ik naar de dood verlang. Waarom doet Aletrino dan zoo? God, wat zijn de menschen laf, en wat is Arnold Aletrino een laf mensch. Totterdood toe had hij me moeten bijstaan. Trouwens, laten we niet hevig zijn. Hij heeft ook zijn leed, ge kent hem wel. En eens anders leed wegen wij altijd te lichtwichtig. Als hij niet bang was geweest voor den wethouder, hij had mij in al mijn ellendes niet verlaten. Maar men heeft hem met broodroof gedreigd. En hij is al ouder, en zijn arme oogen neigen ter blindheid. Toen durfde hij niet. Ge moet hem vergeven. Meent ge dat ik niet alles van die markante dagen weet? Ze verjaren juist in deze week. We zullen ze een festijn van bedroefenis toebereiden. Nadat hij het boek gelezen had, nadat de ruige buien mij overdonderden is hij nog bij mij gekomen, omdat ik lijfs- met zielsziek niet naar zijn huis kon en mocht. Eenmaal was ik beter nog bij hem en zijn vrouw, en toen spraken ze van het boek inhouden te mijnen bate. Van hunne baat is niet gesproken. Maar ik boog mijn hoofd voor de menschen, die onze minderen zijn, niet. Wenscht ge dat ik het nu buige? Toen daarna die oudliberale wethouder zich erin moeide, toen viel hij mij af. Niet eer. Het beslissende moment trouwens voor al Aletrino's handelingen is nóch zijn eigen rede, noch zijn eigen inzicht, maar de vrees voor zijn brood. Dat wel beter is en veiliger, dan het schamele mijne, maar ge weet, hoe meer men heeft, hoe minder men verlies wenscht. Als Aletrino door mijn schetsen op straat is gekomen437., welnu, magister Van Deyssel dan ben ik in de modder geraakt. Hij zit allang veilig thuis, wijl ik nog in de goot lig, vertrapt door al minne menschen. Arnold Aletrino, ons beider vrind, die moest mij helpen, zooals een fabrieksheer moreel verplicht is, den arbeidersman te helpen, die zich in zijn fabriek wonden opliep. Door het verderfelijke sexueele onderwijs van Aletrino is dit alles gebeurd. Welnu, ik bén een zenuwlijder, maar wat is hij? Is morphine soms goed voor zenuwlijders? Hij moest zwijgen, en erkennen, dat hij net zoo goed schuld heeft aan de geboorte van dit boek en al volgende, (want ik buig tóch niet,) als de vader aan de geboorte van een kind, al droeg de moeder het. Ja, hij verloochent dit buitenhuwelijksche kind, en de slecht misleide moeder erbij. Dat is zeer zeker fatsoenlijk. Maar boven fatsoen gaat eerlijkheid. Ik heb schuld (als er schuld is) en hij heeft schuld. Hij erkenne de zijne, zooals ik de mijne erken. Openbaar en eerlijk. Ik verloochen niets van wat hij mij geleerd heeft, dat niet te versmaden was, en daarmee eer ik hem, die mijn vriend is. Van Eeden heeft mij dikwijls voor hem gewaarschuwd, maar ik wenschte hem niet te verlaten zoolang hij mijn bijzijn wenschte. M'neer Van Deyssel, ik ben, best mogelijk, een slecht mensch, maar mijn vriendschap is voor Aletrino een opoffering438. geweest. Wenscht ge mij wijders te verwijten, dat ik uw brief aan mij publiceer? Het lezen van dezen brief is u misschien te vermoeiend, en mij valt het schrijven zwaar, anders zou ik u aantoonen, dat mij, zeker verwijt treffen mag, maar niet zoo zwaar als gij het meent. In uw brief wordt niemand derds gerept, als het uw eerlijk oordeel is, moet ge er voor staan, en als het niet uw eerlijk oordeel was, hadt ge 't niet mogen schrijven. Ik heb u van den zomer om een onderhoud gevraagd, gedachtig aan uw eigen woorden voor in Henri Hartog's boek, dat men slechts daardoor tot goede overeenstemming komt439.. Dan had ik u kunnen spreken, levendig, nu moet ik u schrijven. Toen men mij in Het Volk schandalig schond heb ik u, o, zoo dringend toestemming verzocht tot 't publiceeren van uw brief in mijne verdediging. Gij hebt mij niet eens geantwoord. Daartoe zijt ge niet verplicht, ge kunt het druk hebben en mij te minachten. Toen heb ik uw brief niet gebruikt. Maar nu is het te bar, nu moet ik wel. Ik vraag u nogmaal wel vergeving, maar nu moet 't. Ge moest liever niet spreken van het leed mijns levens. Ge kent het niet. Het is voor u niet van belang ook, maar mij heeft het onherstelbaar geknakt. M'neer Van Deyssel, aan zenuwlijden sterft men niet, en in iedere tabel kunt u zien, hoelang iemand van 23 jaar nog te leven heeft, het is lang. Al te lang. Wat het einde is van dit alles, ik weet het niet. Maar het zal bitter genoeg zijn. Ge moest mij met mijn droefenis alleen laten, liever dan mijn zenuwziek levensleed te wegen tegen praatjes namens Aletrino verspreid, en tegen de fatsoenstheorie, dat men particuliere brieven noch toont noch publiceert. Wat nog niet eens een goede theorie is. Zijt ge boos over mijn schrijven? Ik zeg het zooals ik het gevoel, er is geen leugen in dezen brief. Als ge boos zijt, probeer u dan toch in mijn toestand te verplaatsen. God verhoede440. u, dat ge niemaals in zoo'n impasse raakt. Geloof mij, zeker dat gelooft ge toch wel? uw zeer toegenegen en steeds zeer waardeerende Jacob Israël de Haan
Op 19 juni 1905441. verscheen de Open brief aan P.L. Tak, Hoofdredacteur van ‘Het Volk’, Lid van het Partijbestuur der S.D.A.P.442.; Lid van de Provinciale Staten van Noord-Holland; Lid van den Gemeenteraad van Amsterdam; Lid van de Schoolcommissie te Amsterdam; Lid van de Gezondheidscommissie te Amsterdam; Redacteur van ‘De Kroniek’; Voorzitter van de Vereeniging: ‘Kunst aan het Volk’443.; was de brochure iets later verschenen, dan had aan deze indrukwekkende reeks functies nog het lidmaatschap van de Tweede Kamer toegevoegd kunnen worden, waarin Tak eind juni gekozen werd als afgevaardigde van het kiesdistrict Franeker. Op 20 juni verscheen in Het Volk de advertentie van Jacq. van Cleef: ‘Open brief aan P.L. Tak door Jacob Israël de Haan. Prijs f 0,15’. Het was de eerste keer dat De Haan onder zijn volle naam voor het publiek trad. Men kan de brochure een literair gestileerde redactie noemen van het dossier dat De Haan op verzoek van het bestuur van afdeling Amsterdam V, op 14 februari 1905, is begonnen samen te stellen. Het is proza van sterke retoriek. Op de eerste bladzijden spreekt De Haan de angst uit van ‘een al te arm jong-man’, die het opneemt tegen ‘een veel-vermogend en een grof-willend man’ als Tak. De toon is emotioneel: ‘Gij hebt mij ziek gemaakt’, soms regelrecht oudtestamentisch: ‘Gij hebt mij gebroken met bréukslag op bréukslag’444., soms scherp beschuldigend: ‘Gij hebt mij tot tweemaal toe van mijn broodwinning beroofd’ (door het ontslag bij Het Volk en door de kwestie in Voorschoten). Dan volgt een verslag van de Pijpelijntjes-affaire, te beginnen met het briefje van Tak van 9 juni 1904445.. De Haan laat de gebeurtenissen in chronologische volgorde de revue passeren, zijn ‘verantwoording aan de S.D.A.P.’ (waarin al op een oordeel van Van Deyssel gezinspeeld werd: ‘Ik wensch van mijn apologie geen apocalyps te maken, anders zou ik eens zeggen, hoe een van de litteratoren, die ook in onze kringen zeer gewaardeerd wordt, over mijn boek denkt’), het antwoord van Tak en al wat daarop volgde tot en met het conflict van Tak met de Commissie van Arbitrage en de geweigerde advertentie voor Pijpelijntjes. Maar pièce de résistance van de brochure is de veelbesproken brief van Lodewijk van Deyssel, een publicatie die erop berekend was een aantal tegenstanders diep beschaamd te maken, zoals blijkt uit een zin als: ‘Zal “de Bode”, die zoo'n ophef maakte van Van Deyssel's woorden over Hartog nu inzien, dat ze mij onrechtmatig behandeld heeft?’. En Tak krijgt te horen: ‘Ge moet mijn werk als litterair werk beoordeelen. Trouwens gij weet dit alles heel goed. Gij hebt mij geoordeeld naar beginselen die niet alleen niet de mijne zijn, maar ook de uwe niet’. In de notulen van afdeling Amsterdam V werd op 20 juni 1905 aangetekend: ‘Ook was ontvangen de Open brief van J.I. de Haan aan P.L. Tak, en een briefkaart van J.I. De Haan meldende dat hij niet ter vergadering kon komen’. Een lidmaat dat wel ter vergadering verschenen was, sprak van ‘dit pamflet’ als ‘een enorm wapen in de handen der tegenpartij’ en als ‘de uitdrukking van een monomaan’ en een ‘wraakoefening’: ‘Omdat Tak geen trap kreeg op het Congres wil De Haan hem die thans geven’. Men kwam tot een motie, waarin men zijn vertrouwen in Tak uitsprak. Op 21 juni verscheen het antwoord van Tak op De Haans brochure in Het Volk, een stuk waarin Tak met alle oude en enkele nieuwe kunstgrepen De Haans aanval afsloeg446.. Veel indruk moet de manier gemaakt hebben, waarop hij de brief van Van Deyssel in een handomdraai tot een wapen voor zichzelf omsmeedde. Tak releveert Pijpelijntjes als ‘een boek vol mannenliefde, knapenliefde, en andere sexueele afwijkingen’ en bovendien ‘in den eersten persoon’ geschreven en citeert Van Deyssel: ‘De uitgave van een boek als het uwe nu, bevordert gevoelingen en gedragingen zooals die, welke er met zooveel talent in zijn beschreven’. Tak: ‘Dit was ook onmiddellijk mijn indruk’. De lectuur van een boek als Pijpelijntjes, waarin onzedelijk bedrijf ‘zoo plastisch’ beschreven werd, stond gelijk aan een ‘aanraking met de verleiding’ door zulke onzedelijke ‘individuen’ in de werkelijkheid. Tak en Van Deyssel waren het eens. En Tak, ‘niet zoo vrij als de literaire criticus’, moest doen wat zijn plicht was: De Haan ontslaan. ‘Het geluk van menschenlevens en van gansche gezinnen [was] ermeê gemoeid’. Het spreekt vanzelf dat Jacob Israël de Haan op Taks antwoord reageerde. Het spreekt ook vanzelf dat Tak weigerde De Haans reactie in Het Volk te plaatsen. Het had al heel lang afgelopen moeten zijn. En de zonden van Sodom en Gomorra mochten in geen geval opnieuw in verkiezingstijd met Het Volk in verband worden gebracht. Op 28 juni 1905 werd Tak voor de SDAP in de Tweede Kamer gekozen. De Haan vreesde toen zeer dat hij uit de partij zou worden gestoten. Hij kwam alleen te staan. Op protectie van de zijde van Van Hall of Van Hamel, de Groningse Romanist, leek hij niet meer te kunnen rekenen; steun van de kant van die andere hooggeleerde Van Hamel, de Amsterdamse rechtskundige, was onzeker; Thijm leek boos op hem en Aletrino al helemaal; met Borel was weinig of geen contact. Borel zat op Walden. Toen herinnerde De Haan zich zijn oude vriend Van Eeden. Van Eeden zal geen weet hebben gehad van het artikel dat De Haan intussen over hem had geschreven en dat in dat voorjaar gepubliceerd was in het Orgaan der vereeniging Rust Roest (dH. ‘Iets over Frederik van Eeden’, II/1 (april 1905) p. 1-8). Cor Hugenholtz, apothekares in het Wilhelmina Gasthuis, zat in de redactie van dit blad voor het verplegend personeel van haar ziekenhuis; zij zal De Haan om dit opstel gevraagd hebben. De Haans mening over het gedicht Ellen was sinds 1899 niet noemenswaard veranderd: ‘Ik vind Ellen geen mooi vers als geheel’, ‘Dit heele vers Ellen is van onechte grootdoenerij’. Over ander werk is hij vol lof; hij beveelt de ‘lieve zusters’ de Bloemlezing uit Van Eeden's werken van harte aan. De Haan zal een exemplaar van dit blaadje niet naar Van Eeden gestuurd hebben; het ontbreekt in het Van Eeden-archief en er is ook geen begeleidende brief bekend. Hij zal de kritische toon van zijn opstel niet de juiste manier gevonden hebben om het contact met Van Eeden te herstellen. |
