St-Willibrordstraat.Zeer Geachte Heer Van Deyssel, de open brief aan P.L. Tak door mij, al te verarmd mensch, verschijnt nog deze week. Ik ben nog steeds in achteruitgang, en nu ben ik gansch zielsziek geworden. Het valt mij al te onmogelijk u te schrijven. Mijn open brief zal ik u zenden. Maar over eén ding moet ik u schrijven. Ik hope innig voor uw eerlijkheid, dat het niet waar zij. Mij is stellig verzekerd, dat gij het zijt geweest, die u verzet hebt tegen mijn lidmaatschap van de litteratoren-club, omdat ik geen litterair artist zou zijn. Groote goden, is dat waar! Hebt ge dat gezegd? Is het waar, dat Quérido mij er door heeft moeten sleppen. Meent ge dat ik het lidmaatschap van uwe vereeniging kinderachtig dwingend als een mijn gave waarde vermeerderende eer heb begeerd? Gansch heelendal niet. Het is mij juist aangeboden. In hartelijke trouwe, mijn meester Van Deyssel, ik houd heel veel van u, ik heb een groote vereering voor uw knap proza. Ook ik houd van het proza, dus houd ik ook van Van Deyssel. Maar ge moogt niet valsch zijn, louche tegen u-zelf in. Dat zal ik niet zonder weerspraak en zonder weerwerk laten. Maar gij hebt dit toch niet gedaan? Het zou al te bar zijn. Van Deyssel heeft meteen geantwoord, hij heeft zich verdedigd en De Haan tegelijk aangevallen. Uit de onmiddellijk volgende reactie van De Haan kunnen we de inhoud van Van Deyssels ‘hooghartige brief van boosheid’ ongeveer afleiden. Wat ‘de zaak met de litteratorenclub’ betreft, Van Deyssel ontkende zich tegen De Haans toetreding verzet te hebben. Iemand (wie?) heeft De Haan wat op de mouw gespeld. Misschien heeft Van Deyssel hem hier toegevoegd dat hij niet zo'n ‘groote mond’ moest hebben. In elk geval valt hij De Haan aan op iets, wat Henri Borel geschreven heeft en waaruit bleek dat Borel op de hoogte was van de veelbesproken Van Deyssel-brief. Scherp heeft hij ook de publicatie van dat schrijven in De Haans Open brief aan P.L. Tak afgekeurd. De Haan rechtvaardigt zich, hij erkent dat hij volgens een bepaalde ‘fatsoenstheorie’ wel een ‘zeker verwijt’ verdient, maar houdt dan aan Van Deyssel met glasharde logica voor: ‘als het uw eerlijk oordeel is, moet ge er voor staan, en als het niet uw eerlijk oordeel was, hadt ge 't niet mogen schrijven’. Een passage over Aletrino voegt aan het bekende verhaal van Aletrino's ‘stuip van schrik’ toen hij Pijpelijntjes las, en van zijn optreden in samenwerking met De Haans verloofde, een detail toe: vóórdat wethouder Blooker de beide artsen onder druk zette, zou De Haan het echtpaar Aletrino opgezocht hebben en het advies gekregen hebben Pijpelijntjes voor zijn eigen bestwil terug te trekken. Volgens De Haans nu volgende brief had Van Eeden hem dikwijls voor Aletrino gewaarschuwd. Er is ons één uitlating van Van Eeden over de verhouding tussen Aletrino en De Haan bekend, een dagboeknotitie van vrijdag 21 januari 1916 bij de dood van Aletrino: ‘Hij had leelijke zwakheeden - vooral in zijn gedrag teegenoover Jaap430. de Haan’. |
