Ik ben geheel opgemaakt. Mag en kan niets meer. Nu heb ik ten einde raad en baat een open brief aan Tak in de pers geleid425., waarin ik hem en de zijnen al zijn schandelijke daden verwijt. Daarin heb ik ook uw brief aan mij opgenomen. Ik moet dit doen. Men wil mij immers schandalig afmaken. Vergeef mij dit dus. Het is nu haast een jaar! In 1886 ontstond de Berner Conventie, een poging om tot een internationale regeling van auteursrechten te komen; in 1904 bepleitte Gerard van Hulzen aansluiting van Nederland bij die Conventie (wat bij de wet geregeld zou moeten worden, dus in de Tweede Kamer), op 15 februari 1905 richtten Gerard van Hulzen, Herman Robbers en Herman Heijermans de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen op426.. Aanwezig bij de oprichting waren o.a. Van Looy, Querido, Van Oordt, G.F. Haspels, Top Naeff, Frans Coenen en W.G. van Nouhuys. De doelstelling van de Vereeniging was, aldus Asselbergs, dubbelslachtig: een ‘voorkeurloze boekenschrijversorganisatie’ en óók een bevordering van een ‘bloei der schone letteren’. Men wenste een organisatie waarvan iedere schrijver lid kon worden en die allerlei plannen zou trachten te realiseren, zoals de stichting van een ondersteuningsfonds, de oprichting van een bureau van informatie (‘inlichting, raadgeving en hulp’) aan de leden, modernisering van het auteursrecht, aansluiting van Nederland bij de Berner Conventie, het ‘bloemlezingartikel’ en het ontwerpen van standaardmodellen van contract tussen schrijver en uitgever. In het blad van de Vereeniging, Mededeelingen, vinden we geregeld een ledenlijst, die snel aangroeide. Het waren er in 1905 honderdtwee. Tot voorzitter was op 5 juni 1905 Lodewijk van Deyssel gekozen, wat wel gezien wordt als een ‘overwinning’427. voor Van Deyssel, behaald op Albert Verwey. Van Deyssel en Verwey, die tezamen zo weinig eendrachtig de redactie van De XXe Eeuw gevoerd hadden, waren in 1904 uit elkander gegaan. Verwey leidde nu zijn eigen tijdschrift, De Beweging. Op 1 mei 1905 schreef Herman Robbers aan Verwey over de ‘Schrijversbond’ (de oorspronkelijke naam). Het is hem bekend dat Verwey een ‘ongunstige meening’ had en Robbers licht toe: de bedoeling is een vereniging van ‘beoefenaars van “schoone letteren”, of althans van den “stijl”’, een vakvereniging van ‘gens de lettres’. Iemand die zomaar wel eens wat schrijft, bijvoorbeeld een brochure over de kwestie der erfgooiers, wordt niet toegelaten; wél is gedacht aan geleerden, politici, journalisten, ‘wier werk eenigszins kan worden beschouwd als behoorend tot de litteratuur in ruimsten zin’, maar al met al toch niet meer dan een ‘onder-onsje’ van 500 à 600 leden. Hij meent dat ‘mannen’ als Verwey hun hulp niet mogen achterhouden en stelt de verkiezing van het bestuur op 5 juni op de jaarvergadering in het vooruitzicht. Ons is geen antwoord van Verwey aan Robbers bekend, maar wel een principieel opstel ‘Vereeniging van kunstenaars’ van Verwey in De Beweging (juni 1912), waarschijnlijk geschreven naar aanleiding van de oprichting van een overkoepelend Verbond van Kunstenaarsvereenigingen in 1911 door Robbers, die ook voorzitter was. Verwey stelt de vraag: hoe is de verhouding tussen de stoffelijke en de geestelijke doeleinden die zo'n verbond of vereniging kan nastreven? Wat het stoffelijke betreft, zo'n vereniging zal véél leden wensen, om een grote kas te kweken, de wetgever te beïnvloeden, het belang van de schrijver als ‘verkooper van voortbrengselen’ te behartigen. Streeft men naar een geestelijk doel, dan ligt de nadruk op ‘een keur’ van schrijvers, op kwaliteit; men wil geen grote aanhang, maar een ‘ware gemeenschap van kunstenaars’. Tegenover zo'n vereniging van kunstenaars met ‘genooten’ die wensen ‘zich te sterken aan elkanders arbeid en oordeel, elkanders meeningen te zuiveren en te verruimen, scherp te onderscheiden tusschen kunst en schijnkunst’ enzovoort (er tekent zich in zijn betoog een soort Beweging af!), staat Verwey sympathiek. Maar de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen kweekt ‘wat-dan-ook-geschreven-hebbende letterkundigen’, hetgeen ‘de stand van de letterkundigen’ schaadt. Kunst is, aldus Verwey, geen vak, maar een roeping. De VvL onderscheidt geen roeping van ‘geen-roeping’, zij brengt ‘ons geestelijk goed’ in gevaar. Robbers weerlegde Verwey's kritiek in een opstel in De Nieuwe Gids van 1915, ‘De nieuwe kunstenaar’. Verwey meende ‘dat al het op artistiek gebied voortreflijke tot nog toe enkel uit den eenling of de kleine, eensgezinde groep is voortgekomen, en dat dit steeds zoo blijven zal’, en dat is een ‘romantische meening’. Trouwens, zo voegt Robbers eraan toe, ‘er was altijd veel ouderwets romantisch in het geheele optreden, in bijkans alle sympathieën van “De Beweging”’, terwijl daarentegen de idee van het Verbond ‘geheel modern’ is: een moderne kunstenaar pleegt bij het woord ‘vakvereeniging’ géén ‘vies gezicht te zetten’, zoals Verwey deed. De Haan sloot zich waarschijnlijk in juni 1905, op voorspraak van Querido en Borel, bij de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen aan428.. Nu was hij officieel tot letterkundige verklaard, zij het slechts in de zin van Herman Robbers. Geheel vlot en zonder haperen verliep De Haans intree echter niet. Iemand moet zich tegen zijn toetreden verzet hebben. De Haan schrijft Van Deyssel en deelt hem tevens de op handen zijnde verschijning van de Open brief aan P.L. Tak mee, publicatie van een ‘al te verarmd mensch’429.. |
