St-Willibrordstraat.Zeer Geachte Heer Van Deyssel, het zal u zeker niet bijzonder verwonderen, dat ik nog een brief zend. Ik vroeg u eenige weken geleden den brief, met uw oordeel over ‘Pijpelijntjes’ in ‘Het Volk’ te mogen publiceeren. Leest u ‘Het Volk’? Omdat u mij geen verlof tot die publicatie hebt willen geven, heb ik het niet gedaan. Maar ik vroeg het u niet uit 'n soortement van ijdelheid om eens te laten zien, hoe goed Van Deyssel mijn werk wel vond, neen, waarlijk niet. Ik vroeg het deels in nood omdat dag aan dag ‘Het Volk’ stukken tegen mij opneemt en mijn werk en mij-zelf verdacht maakt. M'neer Thijm, het is niks prettig zoo behandeld te worden. Ik studeer in de rechten en geef voor mijn levensonderhoud lessen, ik had er heel wat, wel 'n twintig in de week, soms nog meer, en ik kon er goed komen, en nog overhebben ook. Nu ben ik al mijn lessen kwijt door 't slechte relletje, dat dit sociaaldemocratische blad tegen mij op touw heeft gezet. Moet ik dan alles van die menschen zachtmoedig en dankend dulden? Als gij uwe meening hadt gezeid, dan hadden ze nooit zoo durven doen. Verlaine zei: ‘Il faut qu'on sache, il faut qu'on plie’ Juist, soms moet men buigen, om te mijden, dat men geheel verslagen wordt. Dus daarom heb ik u gevraagd om mij in deze hatelijke tijden te helpen. Maar weet u, wat ik heb gemerkt: dat 't heel wat moediger is hulp te vragen, dan zonder iemands hulp er maar op los te trekken. Al lijkt dat laatste veel flinker. Wist gij dan, dat menschen zoo bang waren en zoo laf? Een mensch, die ik eerlijk hield en flink durft over mijn werk niet te schrijven, omdat hij vreest daar geldschade van te hebben416.. Maar, m'neer Thijm, dit is het gevaar. Niet, dat de menschen erin slagen mij als mensch en als artist eruit te knoeien, dat is voor mij wel erg en pijnlijk, maar voor de litteraire kunst zoo erg niet. Exoriare aliquis ex ossibus meis ultor417.. Maar waar moet het heen, als een schijnbaar goed kunstenaar schrijft: ‘Je hebt gelijk, en ik zou je graag helpen, maar als ik dat doe, doet 't mij schade’. Il faut qu'on sache, zeker, maar als dit vreezen bij iedereen het won, dan zouden de koekebakkers418. wel gauw baas worden. Ziet u, en dat weet u zelf ook wel, het gaat hier niet om mij en niet om mijn boek, maar om de litteraire kunst, die blijkbaar in Holland nog lang niet veilig is, en bij de socialisten heelemaal niet. Dat is het jammerlijke, en daar mag u nou met uw oudere jaren gerust om lachen, dat gaat mij zeer aan 't hart. Als artist ben ik weg, dat weet ik zeker. ‘De goede en zeldzame kunstenaar’ die u mij noemde is heelemaal verslagen in dit hatelijke geharrewar van vuile verdachtmaking en politieke socialisterij. Ik schrijf nu verdedigende stukjes in ‘Het Volk’ en verdedig mij in rumoerige vergaderingetjes Of er ooit weer een boek van mij komen zal? Ik geloof het niet, ik ben als verlamd in mijn denken. En alles doet mij pijn. 't Liefst zit ik alleen in de zon zonder gedachten. Zeker, ik had graag goede litteratuur willen maken, dat willen we allemaal, is dat niet zoo. Maar nu men mij zoo onmogelijk maakt, nu kan het niet. En het is verstandig zijn leven te veranderen, als het moet. Want er is een grens aan ieders kunnen, ik ben niet sterk en niet ervaren, hoe zal ik mij nu redden. Neen, het is beter maar te wijken. Als ik maar wat vinden kon, dan ging ik wel naar Indië of zoo, doch wist ik maar wat. Persoonlijk ben ik natuurlijk met uw oordeel over mijn werk wel blij, dat spreekt. In maart 1905 verscheen in het van oorsprong anarchistische, Vlaamse maandblad Ontwaking419. een bespreking van Pijpelijntjes van de hand van Segher Rabauw420.. De criticus toonde zich diep onder de indruk van dit boek van ‘miserabele, lamme menschen-wrakken, moei dóór-levend het triestige leven; sombere dagen, zonder zon meest; en regen... regen op de straten en regen door de zielen’ en van het ‘smartelijk samenzijn vol zielewee’ van ‘Cor, met zijn lamme matheid, met zijn meisjesziel en zijn jongensliefde en Hans... Hans met zijn buiën, met zijn dubbelheid, met zijn poozen van ziekelijke wreedaardigheid en martelzucht’. De atmosfeer van het boek is benauwend: ‘menschen voor 't boevenhuis, menschen voor 't krankzinnigengesticht, menschen voor 't hospitaal en voor de snijkamer’, ‘al die verongelukte levens die daar heendrijven’, ‘ontzenuwd en geknakt in de maling van den tragischen tijd’. Over De Haans stijl, zijn ‘manier’, is Rabauw minder te spreken: ‘die is minder de sterke eigenheid die onafscheidbaar van een groote persoonlijkheid is, dan veeleer een letterkundig “procédé”, een kunstmatig samenstel van uiterlijke schrijverstrukjes’, maar toch: ‘Men slikt dit alles wel mee, terwille van het goede’. Segher Rabauw vat samen: ‘een verdienstelijk werk dat een indruk te weeg brengt’, en wijst nog even op de knappe behandeling van het homofiele thema: ‘in 't bezonder doet het ons staren in 't gemoed van een urning, gedubbeld met een nevrosé, wiens doening [De Haan] ons vóórlegt zonder verbloeming lijk zonder schunnigheid en zóó begrijpend, dat wij dit jammer-leven voelen schrijnen in de diepte onzer ziel’. Op 18 maart weeft De Haan in Het Volk weer onverdroten verder aan het net van argumenten waarin hij Tak wilde vangen. Als de administratie van Het Volk (en volgens hem wond Tak de administratie om zijn vinger) advertenties op morele gronden weigert, aldus redeneert De Haan, dan aanvaardt zij voor wél opgenomen advertenties de morele verantwoordelijkheid. Hij wijst dan op ‘quasi-medische’ boeken, die een Amsterdams uitgever (Buys) onder een tweede naam (Van Klaveren) ‘lustig’ in Het Volk mag annonceren. ‘Laten we liever niets weigeren, dan zoo willekeurig te doen’ adviseert De Haan. Zijn toon krijgt iets schrils. ‘Is Het Volk dan een exercitieveld voor de moreele en litteraire liefhebberijtjes van zijn administrateur?’ Vervolgens brengt hij de besprekingen, die van Pijpelijntjes in Ontwaking en in Onze Eeuw verschenen waren, ter sprake (een Van Deyssel-woord ware hem liever geweest!) en citeert: ‘Deze schrijver heeft de taal in zijn macht, en weet ons met zijn droge en rake woordkunst de menschen verbazend scherp uit te beelden’, maar hij citeert Haspels niet volledig en de mededeling dat deze recensent het boek ‘als moreele daad veroordeelt’ geeft de strekking van diens kritiek maar zwakjes weer. De Haan bereikt hier juist een climax: ‘'t is wel wonder, dat juist de leden van de S.D.A.P. niets dan schunnigheid, schunnigheid in mijn boek vinden’. - Tak acht het debat gesloten. Op 26 maart 1905 neemt Het Volk in zijn verslag van de Tweede Kamer-debatten van 24 maart de passage op die het A.R.-kamerlid H. Bijleveld421. wijdde aan De Haan: ‘Men zegt neutraal te kunnen zijn in de school, maar de redaktie van Het Volk logenstraft dat, door aan Jacob de Haan de redaktie van de kinderrubriek te ontnemen, hoewel deze beweert, ook daar neutraal te kunnen zijn’. De redenering was van een onverbiddelijke logica en herinnert dan ook sterk aan De Haans stukje van 14 maart in Het Volk. De sociaaldemocraten beweerden, dat christelijke kinderen - het was de tijd van de debatten over christelijk en openbaar onderwijs - heel goed neutraal les konden krijgen van socialistische of zelfs anarchistische onderwijzers. Tak had het in de Gemeenteraad van Amsterdam opgenomen voor een anarchistische onderwijzer die geschorst en ontslagen was422., omdat hij vond dat deze man ondanks zijn anarchistische ideeën zeer wel neutraal onderwijs kon geven. Maar voor de kinderrubriek van Het Volk moest je blijkbaar heteroseksueel zijn, ook al bleek van je dispositie niets. Het antwoord van het sociaaldemocratische Kamerlid J.H.A. Schaper aan Bijleveld (5 april 1905) kwam op 7 april in het verslag in Het Volk nogal lapidair terug: ‘Weet de heer Bijleveld, die Jacob de Haan aanhaalde, geen verschil tusschen het verspreiden van socialistische ideeën en het beschrijven in romantischen vorm van de tegennatuurlijke liefde?’. Deze weergave van Schapers woorden is onvoldoende en ook onjuist. In de Handelingen van de Tweede Kamer vinden we de ietwat moeizame tekst van Schaper (die enerzijds het standpunt van Tak verdedigde: ‘een anarchist heeft ook recht om zijn beginselen aan te hangen, wanneer hij ze maar niet op de school brengt’, en anderzijds onder de parallel met De Haan probeerde uit te draaien) in extenso. Schaper vond om te beginnen Bijlevelds redenering ‘niet bepaald onhandig’ (ere wie ere toekomt), meent dan dat ‘het schrijven van een allerafschuwelijkst boek’ niet met ‘het aanhangen der socialistische idee’ te vergelijken is en vervolgt en besluit in grote onzekerheid: ‘Ik wil nog niet beweren, dat het schrijven van het boek onzedelijk is, maar het komt meer op het gebied van de quaestie of men een onderwijzer, die buiten de school onzedelijkheid heeft gepleegd, mag toelaten. Het eene dekt niet het andere, maar in die richting gaat het toch. Dit heeft niets te maken met de quaestie of men een socialist of anarchist, ook al is hij onderwijzer, het recht mag geven om propaganda te maken op politiek gebied buiten de school’. Schaper laat de kwestie of het schrijven van een onzedelijk boek gelijk staat met het plegen van een onzedelijke handeling dus onbeslist, alsof van het antwoord op die vraag niet alles afhing. De Haans commentaar423.: ‘Voelt ge [=Tak] Schapers onvastheid wel? 't Is ook niet alles voor een eerlijk man uw optreden te verdedigen. Toegeven, dat gij het neutraliteits-principe hebt geschonden mag hij natuurlijk niet, want dan had de heer Bijleveld gelijk, en dat hebben tegenstanders nu eenmaal niet. Zeggen, dat ik een min en immoreel leven leid mag hij ook niet, want dat weet gij en ook Schaper wel beter’. Op 11 april 1905 tracht Blanche Koelensmid de zaak-De Haan tot de juiste proporties terug te brengen: het gaat De Haan slechts om ‘een relletje in de partij’ en de hele kwestie neemt veel te veel plaatsruimte in beslag. In hetzelfde nummer van Het Volk prijkt een bijdrage van De Haan over caissonwerkers, een stuk in opruiend propagandistische toon (‘Arbeiders van Holland, hoe lang zal 't nog duren’...e.d.), de toon die velen in het werk van P.L. Tak zo node misten. Op 20 april zei De Haan dat ook op een huishoudelijke vergadering van Amsterdam V: ‘Het ontbreekt [Tak] aan revolutionair sentiment’. Hoopte hij op aansluiting bij de oppositie tegen Tak op het aanstaande congres in Den Haag, steun bij de groep om Troelstra, onder wiens opzwepend hoofdredactoraat hij eens medewerker van Het Volk was geworden424.? Maar Troelstra maakte op het congres geen schijn van kans tegen Tak. De Haans mooie motie over advertenties, waaraan nogal gedokterd was (hij luidde tenslotte: ‘De administratie van Het Volk is niet gerechtigd advertenties voor boeken van kunsten en wetenschappen te weigeren’, waarop de afdeling-Arnhem amendeerde: ‘tenzij deze boeken een immoreele strekking hebben’, en de afdeling-Amsterdam I voorstelde: ‘geen advertenties kunnen worden geweigerd op andere dan op politieke en economische gronden’), De Haans motie werd niet eens in behandeling genomen. In Het Volk verschijnt de naam van De Haan in komische context. In de rubriek ‘Van week tot week’, op 23 april, brengen Albert Hahn en een ‘ik’-persoon een bezoek aan twee Haagse ooievaars. ‘Dus handelt 't Congres alleen over koetjes en kalfjes?’ ‘Volstrekt niet, mevrouw. Wij hebben ook een Haankwestie’. ‘Is dat familie van u, mijnheer Hahn?’ vraagt de ooievaar. ‘O, neen’, stottert Hahn ‘met een blos’. De ‘ik’ legt uit: ‘Het betreft een motie van de afdeeling V Amsterdam, zooals u weet de Pijp, over de Pijpelijn...’ ‘Hm, hm! Laat om Godswil de eieren 't niet hooren!’ waarschuwt moeder ooievaar. ‘Ah, juist, ik bedoel... eh... natuurlijk de electrische tramlijnen door de Pijp...’ Op 5 mei stelt De Haan in Het Volk vast dat allerlei voorstellen bij het congres onbehandeld zijn blijven liggen en hij verzoekt om een referendum onder de partijleden. Ditmaal antwoordt niemand hem meer. In de notulen van de huishoudelijke vergadering van Amsterdam V van 9 mei 1905 lezen we: ‘J. De Haan had de indruk gekregen dat wij bedrogen waren’. Intussen moest De Haan zich voorbereiden op het kandidaatsexamen Rechten aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij werd op 22 mei 1905 ‘met alle stemmen [...] afgewezen voor 6 maanden’; die stemmen waren van De Hartog, Conrat en Treub resp. voor Encyclopaedie van het Recht, Romeins Recht en Staathuishoudkunde. Toen hij precies zes maanden later terugkwam, op 23 november 1905, werd hij ‘met alle stemmen voor’ toegelaten en die keer maakte ook Van Hamel deel uit van de examencommissie. Eind mei had De Haan zijn ‘dosier’ oftewel de brochure waarmee hij Bijkerk eens gedreigd had voltooid: de Open brief aan P.L. Tak. En in die Open brief zal de befaamde brief van Lodewijk van Deyssel van 16 juni 1904 een centrale rol spelen. |
