Hoewel ik heel hard werken moet om m'n kapotte kop er bóven te houden, schrijf ik u tóch even. Mijn boek is (litterair) goed, omdat het litterair goéd is, maar het is slecht, omdat het immoreele dingen zeit. Dat is geloof ik uw standpunt. Het mijne onmogelijk. Ik schreef geene veroordeeling en oók geene verdediging van de homosexualiteit. Ik was als artist door sommige dingen zeer aangedaan, en die aandoening heb ik in mijn werk uit te zeggen geprobeerd. Als dát goed geslaagd is, dan ben ik zeer gerust. Misschien had ik het boek niet moeten uítgeven. Voor mijn ekonomische zelf was 't beter geweest, voor mijn psychologische zelf oók. Toch deed ik het. En ik zweér u, met een zeér bezwaard gemoed, uit vrees voor de gevolgen voor anderen. Niet voor mij. U spreekt van de mogelijkheid van een later zuiver boek. Nooit kan ik een goéd boek maken zonder psychosen. Mij deert de hevigheid van de psychologische pathologie. In mijn boek ‘Pathologieën’, dat in 't voorjaar verschijnen zal, als ik gezond ben, geéf ik weér een psychose. Diéper, niet fragmentarisch met het tragische ondergaan van een goed mensch door zijn fatum van herediteit en melancholien. Ikzelf ben zeer zwaar erfelijk belast. Dat deert mij niet. Ik zal leeren willen de pathologieën van sexueele gekken te hanteeren met 'n lichtheid waarmee ik deze springende pennepunten op 't papier voor m'neer Haspels hanteer. U trekt het machtige krachtige van de lieden, mij deren enkel hun ondergangen. Maar u bent van een ander geslacht met een sterker streven en een betere hoop, die wij in deze schrale tijden hulpeloos verloren hebben. De idealen van de burgerij zijn de onze niet meer, de tijd van nieuwe is er nog lang niet. Er is ons niets gebleven dan ondergang. Wij vullen maar den tijd die er noodzakelijk wezen moet tusschen vroeger en later. Zooals er 'n nacht is tusschen twee dagen. Het is geen dagtijd. We zijn ongelukkig geboren, maar nu draag ik dat zoo sterk mogelijk. Ik dank u voor uw vriendelijke brief, veel vriendelijks kreeg ik de laatste maanden niet. Binnen de SDAP ontwikkelde zich de Pijpelijntjes-affaire op eigen wijze verder. Begin januari had De Haan opnieuw aan de Commissie van Arbitrage geschreven, op 8 januari had de commissie hem meegedeeld dat zij nog steeds geschorst was397.. Op 10 januari vertelde Van der Waerden in een bestuursvergadering ‘hoe Jacob de Hahn met hem mede naar huis ging en hem over een zaak sprak tusschen hem en de redactie van “Het Volk”’, en hem gevraagd had de kwestie met de arbitragecommissie op de agenda van de afdeling Amsterdam V te zetten. Op hoger niveau vergaderde op 13 januari het Dagelijks Bestuur van het PB met de (geschorste) Commissie van Arbitrage en bracht naar voren dat ‘publicatie van het voorgevallene [...] aanleiding zou geven tot dingen, die niet gewenscht zijn’. Publicatie zou ‘misschien beteekenen, dat de Hoofdredacteur [Tak] daarin zou zien een zoo ernstige benadeeling van zijn positie, dat hij misschien het Hoofdredacteurschap zou neerleggen’. Tak zelf vond dat hij er nu ‘genoeg onder geleden’ had. Als de zaak was ‘opgelost’, wou hij ‘een persoonlijk schrijven’ aan De Haan zenden om ‘zijn excuses te maken’. De commissie slikte haar voorwaarde: ‘mededeeling van het gebeurde aan de partij’, in en hervatte haar werkzaamheden; aldus werd op 24 januari 1905 aan het Partijbestuur geschreven. De Haan werd ‘mondeling gehoord’, daarna Tak398., die verklaarde: ‘Ik ben blij, dat niet de zonden van Sodom en Gomorra met Het Volk in verband zijn gebracht. Onze vijanden zijn niets vies er in allerlei krantjes partij van te trekken. Als redactie staan we op een post van aanval en verdediging. 't Debat mocht niet langer gerekt worden’. Tak meende ‘voorzichtig gehandeld te hebben, al deed hij misschien formeel onrecht’. Hij deed ‘wat nuttig is voor de partij’399.. Een nieuw element in de strijd vormde De Haans bewering dat hij ‘werd ontslagen als onderwijzer te Voorschoten, omdat hij niet op het stuk van Tak antwoordde en dus schuld bekende’. Men had in Voorschoten dus geloof gehecht aan de verdachtmakingen die Tak over de ‘stemmingen’ en de ‘kranke fantazie’ van De Haan in Het Volk van 9 augustus 1904 gespuid had. Toen de commissie aan Tak vroeg hoe hij het verantwoordde dat De Haan door zijn toedoen ‘in zijn moraliteit en daardoor in zijn brood, schade had geleden’, ontkende Tak simpelweg ‘de persoonlijke moraliteit van De Haan te hebben aangetast’. De Commissie van Arbitrage kwam tot een uitspraak. Zij keurde Taks beleid af en gaf als oordeel: ‘dat de partij en de redactie van Het Volk een zeer verkeerden weg zou opgaan als ze zich liet beheerschen door vrees voor 't gekal en 't geraas van onze vijanden’. Zij meende ‘dat bij de redactie de voorzichtigheid de wijsheid heeft bedrogen’ en dat het stukje van De Haan alsnog geplaatst diende te worden. Zo verscheen De Haans tekst van augustus 1904 op 16 februari 1905 in Het Volk, onder de titel: ‘Nog even 'n nastukje’; het was ‘trouwens nederig en vernederend genoeg’, zoals De Haan zelf oordeelt400.. ‘Nóch met den vriendelijk raadgevenden heer Tak, nóch met den hoofdredacteur van Het Volk’, aldus begint het, ‘wensch ik een litterair debatje op te zetten. Wederzijdsche misbegrijping en wederzijdsche onwelwillendheidjes zullen we maar weglaten. De quaestie of ik mij had moeten verontschuldigen bij de redactie hebben we besproken, dat is van geen belang meer. Ook niet of Tak wel goed ziet, dat 'n boek of direct-zelf-doorleefd moet zijn (dat is nog wat anders dan direct waargenomen) of 't product van een ziekelijke fantasie. Mijn boek is geen fantasie’. De rest van het stuk gaat over de SDAP. Tak heeft hem ‘helder doen zien, dat [hij] niet goed deed uit de partij te gaan’. ‘Van harte wou ik, dat ik niet vervreemd ben geworden van onze partij en onze genossen. Bij de quaestie lid van onze partij of niet beteekent die van 'n boek of niet, toch maar weinig. [...] Misschien dat “de ontvankelijke jongen” tòch nog 'n goed strijdbaar man wordt. Voor wat ik dan toch niet bewust tegen de redactie misdeed, doe ik hier gaarne amende honorable’. Een redactioneel commentaar lichtte toe dat dit stukje ‘krachtens uitspraak van de commissie van arbitrage’ geplaatst werd. Zo vriendelijk als de toon van het ‘nastukje’ was de schrijver na een half jaar al lang niet meer gestemd. Integendeel, hij zat vol grieven. Op 18 februari 1905 kreeg hij een tweede stuk in Het Volk geplaatst: ‘Censuur’. In dit stuk deelt hij mee bij district V van de SDAP afdeling Amsterdam een motie ingediend te hebben, te behandelen op het SDAP-congres in april: ‘Het congres verzoekt de redactie en de administratie van Het Volk zich van iedere censuur over werken van kunst en wetenschap te onthouden’. De Haans toon is die van de Tachtiger kunstenaar, omgaand met Van Eeden en Van Deyssel ‘of het zijn vriendjes waren’, die in halfbeschaafd gezelschap zijn recht opeist: ‘litteraire waarde en zedelijkheid behooren precies even streng gescheiden te zijn als b.v. iemand's geschiktheid als ambtenaar en zijn religieuse of politieke overtuiging’. ‘Het Volk wil geven een litteraire critiek, welnu, dan moet 't zich ook niet inlaten met quaesties van moraliteit in de litteratuur. Ik begrijp wel, hoe dat komt. Men is nog altijd te veel van meening, dat een laat ik maar zeggen immoreel litterair boek minder duldbaar zou zijn dan een o, zoo braaf boek, dat litterair slecht is. [...] In een litteraire kroniek behoort een boek als litteratuur te worden beoordeeld. Het gaat niet aan, daar willekeurige uitzonderingen op te maken, zooals met mijn boek “Pijpelijntjes” is gebeurd’. Het enige, wat de lezer over dat boek te horen had gekregen, was immers het advies van Tak geweest om het niet te lezen (9 augustus 1904). ‘Een litterair overzicht’, vervolgt De Haan, ‘is geen beoordeling zoo maar eens af en toe van een braaf boek’ (men kan daarbij denken aan Sjofelen van Henri Hartog, waarover in Het Volk zelfs een recensie in twee delen had gestaan, op 27 en 30 augustus 1904), ‘maar dient om de lezers een kijk te geven op wat in de nederlandse litteratuur gebeurt. Evenzoogoed als een politiek overzicht niet een bespreking is van wat de redactie sympathiek is, maar van 't heele gebeuren in onzen tijd’. Voorts protesteert De Haan tegen de weigering van de advertentie voor Pijpelijntjes-tweede versie, d.i. censuur door de administratie. De partij wenst advertenties te weigeren voor boeken ‘die strijdig zijn met de algemeen erkende beginselen van zedelijkheid in ons land. Dit is een proeve van onzin, waarop noodwendig iedere poging tot 't vaststellen van moraliteitsprincipes uitloopen moet, omdat zoo'n vast princiep er niet is’. In feite kwam het erop neer dat Het Volk de ‘moraliteitsprincipes’ van de bourgeoisie hanteerde. Tenslotte vraagt De Haan zich af met welk recht op dat moment de SDAP zo fel van leer trok tegen een wetsvoorstel van de christelijke regering om minder wenselijke drukwerken op de postkantoren te censureren: ‘als de postadministratie eens weigerde mijn boek “Pijpelijntjes” te verzenden, dan deed die precies wat de administratie van Het Volk ook doet, n.l. weigeren mede te werken aan de verspreiding van een slecht boek’. De redactie van Het Volk ontkende in een naschrift laconiek dat zij censuur toepaste. Op dezelfde 18de februari 1905 dateren we, steunend op het poststempel op het couvert, een brief aan Saalborn. Het gedoe met de SDAP bezorgt De Haan ‘gewrijf en geschrijf’ en Saalborn irriteert hem. Kennelijk bereidt De Haan zich voor op het congres van de SDAP, dat van 23 tot 25 april 1905 zou plaatsvinden. Iedere onnodige afleiding is hem ‘welkom’, schrijft hij en verbetert snel: ‘onwelkom’. Niet alle details in deze brief aan Saalborn zijn duidelijk. De betekenis van het ‘pottegepruts’ bijvoorbeeld is ons onbekend. Misschien is er verband met De Telegraaf, die ook in de St. Nicolaasstraat gevestigd was. Het Catulluscitaat kennen we uit Pathologieën, waar het als één der motto's fungeert; De Haan gebruikt er in zijn brief één regel van: omnes unius aestimemus assis, ‘laten we alle mensen (g)één cent waard achten’. Bij Catullus wordt omnes verbonden met rumores: ‘alle gepraat’. Het kan heel goed zijn dat dit citaat al in 1905 als motto aan Pathologieën was toegedacht. Het oude idee van het jongensboek (of kinderboek) wordt definitief weggewuifd. |
