St. Willibrordstraat.Arnold, je brief vond ik onaangenaam met je schrijfsels over de R.R.401. van De Telegraaf. Die man is een nul, en om diens oordeelen geef ik geen slag. Omnes unius aestimemus assis, zooals Catullus zegt. Je moest nu te verstandig zijn en te voornaam om je met dat soort lui af te geven. Wier aanmatigende verwaandheid al zooveel jongelui op den verkeerden weg van quasi-litterair geknoei heeft geholpen. Als je werkelijk een litterair artist bent moet je dat pottegepruts met dat mensch uit de St-Nicolaasstraat laten, want anders zul je tallooze decepties hebben. Ik zou maar kalm mijn gymnasiumjaren gebruiken om veel kennis te krijgen. Die komt je altijd te pas. Ik wensch niet te zedepreken, overigens zul je je toch aan mij niet storen, en ik heb 't te druk. Over mijn eigen litterair werk schrijf ik niet. Wat mijn boeken betreft, jongensboeken zijn het alderminst. Ik ben niet boos op je, al schrijf ik kort en kortaf. Maar ik moet op 't a.s. congres van de S.D.A.P. met een paar domme menschen afrekenen, en nu geeft mij dat veel gewrijf en geschrijf, daarom is iedere onnoodige afleiding mij onwelkom. Als je dit jaar zitten blijft402., ben ik wel boos op je. Je kunt heel goed werken, en 't zou een pijnelijke schande zijn, als je bij de prullen kwam te hooren. Merci. Wil de gymnasiast nog eens bij me komen praten? Zaterdagmiddags om drie uur ben ik altijd vrij en in de Palestrinastraat. Als je lust hebt, kom dan nog maar eens. In haast, t.t. Jacob de Haan |
