St. Willibrordstraat.Beste Arnold, ik dank je voor je nieuwjaarskaartje en omdat je daárop schreef, dat je graag weer iets van mij hoorde, daárom schrijf ik je nú weer. Ik schrijf zeér weinig brieven, omdat men het mij lastig maakt, zeér lastig, en omdat ik voor mijn werk veel rust noodig heb. Het is altijd prettig als je werk goédgevonden wordt, en dus deed het mij genoegen, dat velen mijn roman van deze zomer zéér apprecieerden. Maar het is gewoon ellendig om dan van iedereen ellenlange brieven, natuurlijk met verzoek om brief-terug, te ontvangen. Begrijp je dat wel? Verstandige menschen doen zoo niet, dus zijn die brieven van de onverstandigen dubbel onaangenaam. En ik vreés, dat als over 'n paar maanden mijn roman ‘Pathologieën’ verschijnt, dat 't dan weér op nieuw begint. Dus ik dek me maar bij voorbaat. Misschien krijg je van dat nieuwe boek, een hommage de l'auteur. Waarlijk de auteur is je zeér genegen gebleven, en heeft dikwijls nog aan je gedacht, vooral omdat ik zoó vaak jullui huis langsga. Hoe gaat het op school? Dát wil ik altijd graag weten, ik hou zelf heel veél van studie, en jongens, die niet goed studeeren zijn mij kortaf 'n horreur. Ik hoop, dat je dat zelf oók inziet, en zorgen zult even goed in de vijfde te komen, als je tot mijn groot genoegen in de vierde kwam. Je moet niet boos zijn, dat ik kort en zeer kortaf schrijf. Ik ben wat oververmoeid en het voltooien van ‘Pathologieën’ heeft mij ontzaggelijk veel moeite gekost. Veel vriendelijks, ook aan je familie van Jacob de Haan
Haspels heeft kennelijk geantwoord op de brief van eind 1904 en van een ‘later zuiver’ boek gesproken, ongeveer zoals Van Deyssel had gedaan. |
