Op 17 december 1904 stond De Haans naam in Het Volk, in een advertentie voor een feestavond van de SDAP afd. Amsterdam III op 8 januari 1905. P.L. Tak was feestredenaar, er was een bijdrage van L.M. Hermans en er werd een toneelstukje van De Haan opgevoerd, dat hij nooit gepubliceerd heeft. Het Volk vatte ‘In staking, werkmansschets in één bedrijf’ op 10 januari 1905 als volgt samen: ‘een dominee die flinke arbeiders tot verraad tracht over te halen’ en oordeelde: ‘goed van opzet, doch niet dramatisch genoeg van uitwerking’. Het publiek had zich geamuseerd: ‘enkele krachtige gezegden vonden grooten bijval’. De Haan zal meer geïnteresseerd zijn geweest in beoordelingen van Pijpelijntjes. Uit 1904 kennen wij twee recensies, van P.M. Wink in Levensrecht en van G.F. Haspels in Onze Eeuw. Wink, een bekende van Van Eeden, anarchist en uitgever, zet De Haan om te beginnen zijn oude stukje over dienstweigering nog eens betaald: ‘De heer Jacob de Haan is 'n zeer buitengewoon jongmensch - dat is ons allen duidelijk geworden bij zijn overbluffende uitspraak over Tolstoy in het toenmaals door hem geredigeerde kindergedeelte van het Zondagsblad van het Volk: “Graaf Leo is dom!”’. De roman wordt in dit perspectief gezien: ‘De heer Jacob de Haan schijnt er van te houden het publiek te overbluffen, te overduvelen. Hij heeft het weer eens willen doen en heeft nu, inplaats van een enkel idioot zinnetje, 'n heel boek de wereld ingestuurd. Zijn tweede succes evenaart het eerste: het publiek is weer baba385.. Maar de schaterlach, die op de eerste verwondering volgde, zal toch ditmaal wel uitblijven’. En weer wordt Het Volk er bij gehaald: ‘Ik kan me heel goed begrijpen dat de heer Tak, na kennismaking met dit misselijke produkt, z'n auteur, Jacob de Haan, onmiddellijk de redactie van de kinderkrant ontnam’. Wink vervolgt: ‘'t Is een eigenaardig verschijnsel dat onze “moderne” litteratuur steeds schunniger en platter dingen gaat voortbrengen. Nu kan men 'n schrijver vaak ietwat gewaagd realisme vergeven om der wille van de kunstwaarde van z'n boek of om z'n tintelende geestigheid. Maar dat gewilde uitstallen van sexueele en andere smeerlapperij, welke in de laatste jaren ons herhaaldelijk voorgezet wordt in 'n taaltje, dat in de verte op Hollandsch lijkt, is me een ergernis. De vuilheden uit chambree386. en bordeel, de goorheid en smerigheid uit de achterbuurten, de verdierlijking van het meest gedemoraliseerde gedeelte van ons volk wordt ons in kleuren en geuren afgemaald, met, naar 't schijnt, het grootste welgevallen van de zijde der schrijvers. En het succes is groot - bij een zeker gedeelte van het publiek’. Dan citeert hij een ‘confrater-uitgever’, die gezegd had: ‘Een boek kan tegenwoordig niet te smerig zijn’, en hij beaamt dat. Van de kritiek is niets te verwachten: ‘De critiek, voor zoover die zich niet zoozeer laat overduvelen door de “woordkunst” dat ze de smeerlapperij niet meer opmerkt, is volkomen machteloos. - Dat is een vuil boek! schrijft ze neer - en dat is de beste reclame, die schrijver en uitgever zich kunnen denken. Ik maak me dan ook niet de minste illusie dat ik door Jacob de Haan's boek te signaleeren, het debiet er van zal benadeelen - maar dat hoeft ook niet. Eigenlijk - hoe meer menschen dit boek lezen, hoe beter, want hier is de “moderne richting” tot aan de spits gedreven en er moet in den lezer een walg opkomen en een verlangen naar idiëeler lectuur’. Over de ‘letterkundige verdiensten, zoo die er zijn, van dit boek’ zwijgt Wink: ‘Ik heb geen orgaan om die te waardeeren’, in tegenstelling tot zijn echtgenote die het wel aardig vond als een haan schelrood kraaide387.. Wink heeft een andere belangstelling: ‘het alles overbluffende in Jacob de Haan's boek is het onderwerp. Waarschijnlijk - en terecht - van meening dat we al meer dan genoeg hebben van verliefde mannen en dito vrouwen, van meervoudige huwelijken, van echtbreuken, van kroeg- en bordeel impressies, heeft hij tot thema gekozen een fragment uit het leven van 'n paar pederasten. Waarom ook niet? 't Lag in de lijn - en als Jacob de Haan 't niet gedaan had, dan had waarschijnlijk een ander dat onderwerp eens uitgewerkt. Pederasten schijnen tegenwoordig interessante lui. Ze worden van alle kanten bekeken bij medische, juridische, ethische en religieusche lampjes. Verbazend geleerde boeken worden over hen geschreven - en 't schijnt bon ton te zijn om een lans te breken voor de homo-sexueelen van beiderlei kunne. Straks krijgen we nog wel 'n “Pijpelijntjes” in 't vrouwelijke getransponeerd. Ik weet niet of er nog meer sexueele smeerlapperij is, maar zoo ja, dan krijgen we die ook nog wel is in “brandend schelrood kraaienden” stijl. “Pijpelijntjes” heet Jacob de Haan's boek. Ik heb dien titel hooren uitleggen als “lijntjes”, dus: vluchtige omtrekken uit de Pijp het bekende Amsterdamsche stadsdeel. Nu wist ik wel, dat “de Pijp” niet juist in een reuke van heiligheid staat, maar wanneer het geheel zou beantwoorden aan de “lijntjes” van Jacob de Haan, dan vrees ik dat vandaag of morgen 'n vuurregen de bewoners nog wel eens anders bezoeken zal dan nu de stinkende kaarsenfabriek. Want de zonde van Sodom en Gomorra schijnt er dan zéér inheemsch’. Ook het vertellersstandpunt komt ter sprake: ‘En wèl heeft Jacob de Haan zich er in gewerkt - zóó zelfs dat hij zijn boek kon gaan schrijven in de eerste persoon - de eerste persoon van een actief pederast en hij de verrukking op papier kon brengen van een man, die een anderen man in de armen ligt’. Om de laatste regels van Winks stuk naar waarde te schatten moet iets opgehaald worden van een gedachtenwisseling over het ‘leed van de homo-sexueelen’, in 1904 in Levensrecht gepubliceerd. Naar aanleiding van de brochure Ongekend leed van L.S.A.M. von Römer had J(ohan) B(randenburg jr) in augustus zijn sympathie met hun ‘jammerlot’ geboekstaafd. Hij citeerde uit Von Römers publicatie ook een opsomming van beroemdheden van homofielen huize, van Frederik de Grote tot Krupp en generaal MacDonald, held uit de Anglo-Boerenoorlog388.. Er kwam een ‘anti-kritiek’ van de hand van Lod. van Mierop: de ‘man-manlike liefde’ bleef toch ‘seksuele ontaarding’, immers ‘het grond-oogmerk van de geslachtsdaden is de voortplanting’. Van Mierop eist dat de homoseksueel zich van geslachtsdaden onthoudt en stelt hem ter compensatie in het vooruitzicht ‘dat op het hoger menselik gebied alle stroomen van liefdesgloed in onbelemmerde vrijheid mogen uitvloeien’, ‘fonteinen van gelukschenkend leven’. Daar kwamen weer reacties op, van Von Römer zelf en van Brandenburg, die ‘recht’ eiste, ‘gelijk recht voor den Homo-seksueel en den Hetero-seksueel’, ‘recht om te leven geheel en al, onbelemmerd door door ons gezette reinheidsgrenzen’. In het slot van Winks recensie zien we nu hoe van Pijpelijntjes gebruik gemaakt kon worden om idealistische pleitbezorgers van de homofiele zaak te dwarsbomen: ‘Eén goed ding kan er, dunkt me, nog voortkomen uit de grootheid van een boek als “Pijpelijntjes” - n.l. het op zijn juiste waarde schatten van het groote-woorden-geschreeuw om “recht, gelijk recht” voor de homo-sexueelen, gelijk we dit nog kregen in 't vorig nummer van Joh. B. Wat wil men dan toch? Dat we in plechtige deputaties aan vieze lammelingen als die Cor en die Hans389. onze zeer bijzondere hoogachting gaan betuigen? Dat we hun - om hen in staat te stellen “onbelemmerd door door ons gezette reinheidsgrenzen” te “leven, geheel en al” - een bataillon vervuilde schandjongens ter beschikking stellen? Ik vind het eenvoudig een beleediging voor ieder gelukkig getrouwd mensch om zijn liefde op één lijn te willen stellen met die der “Cors” en der “Hansen” en, hoe interessant dergelijke nare individuen dan ook sommigen mogen schijnen, zal ik niet de eenige zijn, die hoopt dat men ons nu eens eindelijk verschoone van dat geschrijf en getheoretiseer over pederastie. 't Onderwerp is toch eigenlijk te vies!’.
Dominee G.F. Haspels, criticus en schrijver, had in Onze Eeuw respect voor De Haans schrijftalent: ‘deze schrijver heeft de taal in zijn macht, en weet met zijn droge, rake woordkunst ons zijn menschen en hun omgeving verbazend scherp uit te beelden, zonder ons te vermoeien met die ellenlange, al te nauwkeurige beschrijvingen onzer tegenwoordige schriftgeleerden. Maar’, gaat Haspels verontwaardigd voort, ‘wàt hij dan beschrijft!!’. En hij vervolgt: ‘Dat de Pijpelijntjes, scènes uit de Pijp, de niet hooggetaxeerde amsterdamsche studentenbuurt, een lectuur zou geven, niet direct geschikt om voor te lezen op een jongedames-kransje, was te vermoeden, maar wie kon verdacht zijn op deze schendliteratuur van walgelijke, homosexueele ontuchtigheden!! En kon men zich nu maar troosten dat die narigheid ook alweer geleden was, als men iemand dit schendboekje met een tang de kamer had zien uitdragen om het in de gracht te gooien... maar neen, litera scripta manet390.. Het blijft om onze door onzedelijkheid reeds genoeg verdorven atmosfeer nog meer te verpesten. Om dan nog maar niet eens aan de mogelijkheid te denken dat de reine verbeelding van een jong leven reddeloos bezoedeld wordt door die walgelijke viezigheden! En om dan ook maar niet te vragen, door welke macht de schrijver bezield was, om zich te moeten verdiepen in en zijn talent te geven aan deze vuilaardige dingen!’. Bij deze laatste zin van dominee Haspels denkt men onwillekeurig aan de macht van de duivel. Het maandschrift Onze Eeuw was in 1901 opgericht uit onvrede met het aloude blad De Gids. Dat blad maakte niet voldoende front tegenover de nieuwlichterij van Tachtig, vond men, en plaatste bovendien zelf hoogst aanstootgevende bijdragen zoals in 1900 De Stille Kracht. Het onfatsoen van die roman vervulde menigeen met ontzetting, overigens ook Van Deyssel, die, ‘de onzedelijkheden van Louis Couperus’ lezend, zich afvroeg wie ‘een met magiesch vergift [sirih] bespoten naakte dame tot gezelschap zou wenschen?’391. Met ongeveer dezelfde zinswending distantieerde Van Deyssel zich van Leonie van Oudijck uit De Stille Kracht en van Joop Driessen uit Pijpelijntjes. Waarom zocht De Haan contact met de redacteur van een maandschrift dat juist opgericht was als fatsoenlijke tegenhanger van het blad waarin porno als De Stille Kracht werd afgedrukt? Het lijkt een uitzichtloze onderneming om deze burcht van fatsoen aan te willen tasten, maar dat schijnt precies De Haans fatum (of als men wil: hobby) geweest te zijn: zoals hij Van Deyssel met diens eigen principes om de oren sloeg, zo zat hij dominee Haspels met Job en Jeremia op de ziel. Was er iets in (het werk van) Haspels wat De Haan aantrok? Haspels schreef proza, novellen, romans, kritieken. Een van Haspels' bekendste romans was David en Jonathan (1915). De titel belooft wat. Men herinnert zich het klassieke verhaal van vriendschap en Davids beroemde klaagzang: ‘Het is mij bang om u, mijn broeder Jonathan, / gij waart mij zeer lief; / uw liefde was mij wonderlijker dan liefde van vrouwen’. Maar het oude verhaal van dood en hartstocht wordt door Haspels verhaspeld tot een versie van de kinderbijbel: ‘David en Jonathan werden spoedig groote vrienden. En hun vriendschap was heel buitengewoon’. Daar blijft het bij. We moeten blij zijn met het geluk van anderen, zegt de tekst, ‘dan wil Jezus onze vriend zijn’. Nee, dit werk heeft weinig gemeen met Pijpelijntjes of Pathologieën. In 1993 oordeelde Aart de Groot: ‘De meeste waardering hebben op den duur zijn literaire kritieken gekregen’. Sterker, men mag wel zeggen dat Haspels door één kritiek voor de Nederlandse literatuurgeschiedenis behouden is gebleven: door zijn kritiek op Pijpelijntjes. In dat stukje stond één zin die De Haan op het lijf geschreven was en die hij dan ook op 18 maart 1905 in Het Volk tegen P.L. Tak uitspeelde: ‘Deze schrijver heeft de taal in zijn macht, en weet ons met zijn droge en rake woordkunst de menschen verbazend scherp uit te beelden’. Dit was waar het De Haan om ging: de erkenning van de literaire kwaliteit van zijn werk, de erkenning van zijn schrijverschap. Over de rest kon je praten; en dat deed De Haan. Eerst bestrijdt hij Haspels' opmerking over ‘homosexueele ontuchtigheden’ in Pijpelijntjes. Er zijn evenveel heteroseksuele ontuchtigheden in het boek, zegt hij. Begrijpt hij Haspels niet of doet hij alsof? Heteroseksuele ontucht vindt men eigenlijk alleen in het hoofdstuk ‘M'neer Frits’ en misschien in de scène op de wc waar dat meisje een kind krijgt of op de avondjes van juffrouw Meks waar de man van huisjuffrouw vies doet in zijn broekzak. Van homoseksuele ontucht was echter, in de ogen van Haspels, natuurlijk elke bladzij, iedere passage van Pijpelijntjes doordrenkt. Pijpelijntjes is geen boek zoals Een liefde van Lodewijk van Deyssel, geen boek waar men bijvoorbeeld een gekuiste uitgave van kan maken. Intussen stelt De Haan homoseksualiteit als romanthema en als moreel probleem ter discussie. Toen hij zijn boek schreef, zegt hij, was hij ‘als artist door sommige dingen zeer aangedaan, en die aandoening heb ik in mijn werk uit te zeggen geprobeerd. Als dát goed geslaagd is, dan ben ik zeer gerust’. Hij weigert als auteur partij te kiezen, verzekert hij Haspels: ‘ik schreef geen veroordeeling en oók geene verdediging van de homosexualiteit’. Maar het ‘schrijven over homosexueele dingen’ heeft ook een morele kant: is het goed of is het slecht? Er is geen zekerheid, zegt De Haan, er is geen vaste moraal, zoals ook Hans in Pijpelijntjes over zijn verhouding met Cor zegt: ‘'t is misschien niet goed, zoals we leven, maar het is nu eenmaal zo’. Wie durft hier een oordeel vellen? In elk geval: als schrijver van Pijpelijntjes voelt De Haan zich voor God en de mensen, ‘in het leven en daarlater’, verantwoord. En hij citeert een beroemde duistere passage uit de Bijbel (Job 19:25): ‘ik weet dat mijn Verlosser leeft en dat Hij mij na mijn dood in mijn recht zal herstellen’. Het is een van de weinige plaatsen in de geschriften van De Haan waar hij op eigen wijze iets van zijn geloof laat merken. |
