Ja, zoo moeten jammerlijk genoeg, de menschen het vinden. Litterair goed, moreel slecht. Een pest der maatschappij, zooals 'n predikant mij met Jeremia-toorn toebeet392.. Maar daárom schrijf ik u tot betere leering, omdat ik het zeer spijtig vind, dat ge u van de moraliteitskwestie zoo vlot afmaakt. Het is absoluut onwaar, dat alle homosexueele uitingen in mijn boek ontuchtigheden zijn. Neen m'nheer Haspels, er zijn precies evenveel heterosexueele ontuchtigheden. Waarom wil men dat niet inzien? Zelfs u niet. Waarom maakt u mijn boek voor een schendboek uit. Dan doet u precies zooals ‘Het Volk’ dee, in vreeze, dat dit boek van een sociaaldemocraat tegen hèn zou worden opgespeeld. Ben ik dan zoo onnoozel, dat ik zoo iets gul slikken zou? Werkelijk m'neer Haspels, al ben ik maar 22 jaar, ik weet wel, wat ik tegenover het leven te verantwoorden heb. Mijn boek durf ik in het leven en daarlater te verdedigen als geen slechtheid. Mijn God, is dan heel Holland dwaas? Als 'n booze hond achterjaagt men mij. Doet u nu ook mee? Bent u zoo bang voor de reinheid van hèn, die mijn boek lezen? Ben ik dan slecht in reinheid geworden die het doorwerkte en schreef. Ja, het wàs een taak, niét luchtig en die mij zeer geknauwd heeft. Maar ik zal winnen weer in kracht en hevigheid. Mijn boek ‘Pathologieën’ verschijnt, al zou men mij laten uithongeren, zooals braaf Holland wel wou... Pedicabo ego vos et inrumabo. Van Deyssel schreef mij een bemoedigende brief. Hij vond 't boek heél goed. Misschien als ik goed gezond ben schrijf ik u weér eens. Uwe kritiek heeft een vriendlijke impressie op mijn downe kop gemaakt. Dank u weer wel. Maar, wat u verder zeit, dat is dwaling van u. Misschien dwaal ik. Wie zal ons rechten? Maar ik weet mijn pleitbezorger leeft, Die mij zal rechten, als ik stof ben.
