Sam schreef mij een zeer verdrietige brief. Het spijt me wel, dat ik niets voor hem doen kan. Hij heeft mij eenige jaren lang geleerd, dat deze dingen goed waren en normaal. Nu moet hij niet luiduit klagen, dat de menschen hem en mij zullen herkennen in het boek. Dat had hij moeten dragen, zooals ik veelmeer te verduren heb. Qui veut les fins veut les moyens337., die deze dingen verdedigen wil en die moet niet terugschuwen als er iets gebeurt, dat niet leit in de lijn Den Tex 50 - Politiebureau338.. Sam heef mij min mishandeld, en gevingerd en gepeuterd in mijn fijnste en intiemste dingen. Waarom klaagt hij mij nu aan, geweldig? Neen, tegen de rede van mijn leven zal ik nooit meer iets doen. Dat maakt de meeste onvastheid juist. Maar naar wat ik vast en vast zie als goed, daar wil ik heen. Al zal ik het einde niet krijgen. Beste vriend, ik heb veel te lijden gehad, en ik doe dat nu nog. Maar alles zal goed komen, als ik maar mijn heldere zelfstandigheid herwinnen kan. Over dit boek draag ik geen zware spijt. Het zal met ons gaan zooals het gaan zal.
